Abstract

In the current digital era, the rapid development of technology has resulted in the creation of increasingly sophisticated technological products. In the marketing of these products, the use of language is indispensable. Written language explaining the steps or stages of product use is called a procedural text genre. This text plays a vital role in product marketing because it contains essential information related to product explanations, making it easy for consumers to understand. This is what underlies the importance of conducting research on the function of language in terms of meaning and language structure in the genre of technological procedure texts. By applying a qualitative method, the research data in the genre of technological procedural texts is analysed based on its linguistic functions, covering aspects of meaning and language structure. In the research findings, three language functions were obtained, namely those that contain meaning: Command, Statement, and Prohibition. These three language functions are realised in language (text) in the form/structure: Imperative and Declarative. First, commands use the imperative structure. Second, statements are structured in the declarative form. Third, prohibitions are structured imperatively; fourth, commands are structured declaratively; and finally, fifth, prohibitions are structured declaratively.

Abstract

The implementation of inclusive education policies in Indonesia mandates that all students, including those with special needs, receive quality English language instruction. However, English teachers in rural special education settings face unique pedagogical challenges that require specialized approaches and adaptive instruction. Limited research exists on the specific challenges and instructional strategies employed by English teachers working with special needs students in resource-constrained rural environments. This study aims to examine the challenges encountered by English teachers and analyze the teaching strategies implemented when instructing English to special needs students in rural educational contexts. A qualitative narrative inquiry design was employed at public special needs school in Landak Regency, involving two English teachers with different educational backgrounds. Data collection utilized classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis, focusing on teachers instructing students with hearing impairments and intellectual disabilities across combined junior and senior high school levels. The findings revealed three primary challenges: resource limitations, professional development gaps, and student-specific learning barriers. Both teachers successfully implemented four adaptive teaching strategies: explicit instruction, multi-sensory teaching approaches, metacognitive methods, and eclectic pedagogical frameworks. Despite resource constraints, teachers demonstrated remarkable creativity in developing context-appropriate teaching materials and implementing differentiated instruction tailored to specific disability categories. Effective English language teaching for special needs students is achievable in rural settings through teacher adaptability and strategic pedagogical modifications. The study contributes empirical evidence that quality inclusive education does not solely depend on extensive resources but rather on innovative teaching approaches and context-specific strategy implementation.

Abstract

The Nasi Hadap-Hadapan tradition is a significant ceremonial practice of the Batubara community in North Sumatra, Indonesia, characterized by symbolic actions and culturally embedded communication. Despite its rich communicative features, this tradition has not been thoroughly examined through a pragmatic linguistic lens, particularly using a mixed method approach. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the exploratory sequential mixed method in analyzing the forms, functions, and meanings of speech acts within the Nasi Adap-Adapan tradition. The qualitative phase involved participatory observation and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and ceremony participants to identify pragmatic patterns and sociocultural meanings. The quantitative phase analyzed 145 speech acts transcribed from video recordings, categorized into five types based on Searle’s classification: expressive, directive, representative, commissive, and declarative. The findings revealed that expressive (33.8%) and directive (28.3%) speech acts were the most dominant, emphasizing the ceremony’s function in fostering emotional bonds and guiding ritual procedures. These acts were embedded within cultural symbols, such as food offerings and customary phrases. The mixed method approach proved effective in capturing both the linguistic structure and sociocultural context of ceremonial communication. This study highlights the importance of integrated methodologies in pragmatic research, particularly in documenting and analyzing traditional oral practices within non-Western cultural contexts. Abstract

This research explores the intertextuality found in the specialized registers used by movie enthusiast communities on Twitter. With the rapid growth of digital communication and community-based discourse on platforms like Twitter, this study investigates how specific language and references, such as tweets and movie-related terminology are shaped by intertextuality and paratext elements. The research aims to identify types of intertextuality within these registers and analyze how they are formed and function in fostering shared meaning among community members. Using a qualitative exploratory approach, this study employs discourse analysis with intertextuality theory by Julia Kristeva (1980) and paratext theory by Jonathan Gray (2010) as its theoretical foundation. The data consists of 21 tweets and posts collected from the “Movie Twitter” community, which were selected based on their relevance to cinematic discourse and use of English-language specialized registers. The analysis reveals that most registers exhibit conventional and indirect intertextuality, supported by paratext elements such as trailers, reviews, and fan theories that guide or shape audience interpretation. These linguistic practices help reinforce cultural continuity within the community, enabling users to participate in a collective interpretive space. The findings suggest that intertextual registers not only enhance discourse cohesion but also contribute to audience engagement and meaning-making processes. The study recommends further research on intertextuality in other online subcultures and highlights the importance of digital literacy in understanding cultural communication.

Abstract

Pronunciation skills are a crucial component of effective oral communication, particularly for EFL learners. This study examines the challenges faced by English as a foreign language (EFL) learners when pronouncing words ending in -ed. It also explores whether explicit instruction on the pronunciation rules of -ed endings can improve learners' pronunciation skills. Five learners who graduated from the same senior high school participated in the research. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the study employed two pronunciation tests (pre- and post-tests) and utilized popular songs containing words with -ed endings as learning media. The research focused on students' ability to pronounce the three correct-ed sounds (/d/, /t/, and /?d/) based on the final consonant of the base word. After receiving explicit instruction, learners showed significant improvement, particularly in distinguishing and pronouncing the sounds correctly. Most participants reduced their pronunciation errors and obtained a clearer understanding of the rules. These findings suggest that combining rule-based instruction with engaging materials like song lyrics can be effective in improving pronunciation.

Abstract

The vowel’s placement of translated lyrics upon the still-the same melody constitutes the emotion of a song. Each syllable has certain stress that needs to be correctly installed into a matching note. Confusing zones are often created when the stress is not suitable to the obstinacy level of the melody. This article analyses the matched placement of syllables upon melody; unmatched figures accidentally creating inconvenience parts of translated song making it loses its feeling. The study reveals that translating song needs to accommodate not only complete structure of words and phrases, but also the stress of every single syllable it brings. The method used in this study is library research, direct-indirect assessment, and analytic. Interviewing and observing are used to support the author’s experiences. This article ends up with a comparative evaluation of two Indonesian translated versions regularly sung, “Blessed Assurance” found in Lagu Sion that proved to be categorized emotionless.

Abstract

The study explores the power relations embedded within the construction of female identity in Girl in Translation, a novel portraying the immigrant experience of Kimberly, a young Chinese girl who relocates to Brooklyn, New York. Confronted by cultural barries and socioeconomic hardship, Kimberly’s journey reveals tensions surrounding gender and societal expectations. Employing a qualitative approach under a constructivist paradigm, this reasearch applies Michel Foucault’s theory of power to analyze the depiction of gender dynamics in the narrative. The findings indicate two distinct manifestation of power; epistemic power, shaped through discourse and informal knowledge, and corporeal power, exercised over the body. These forms of domination influence patterns of thought and behavior within male-female relationships, as illustrated through Kimberly’s personal and social interactions. Ultimately, the study highlights how the novel critiques normative structures and foregrounds the subtle mechanisms of control within everyday life.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the kinship relationship between Riau Malay and Sundanese languages ??seen from some vocabularies similarities. The method used is descriptive qualitative and quantitative with note-taking technique. The research data is formed of vocabulary in BMR and BS obtained from various written sources and informant interviews. Based on 200 Swadesh words for BMR and BS, there are 12,5%, namely 25 identical pairs words. This data proves that BMR and BS are not closely related because the vocabulary similarities are less than 36% or part of the sub-grouping. Vowel relatives couples different by 16 data or about 18%; 3 relatives couples have different pairs of consonants or about 1.5%; 5 relatives couples or about 2.5% who have one syllable difference; and 9 relatives couples or about 4.5% who have one consonant phoneme difference. The results of the study found that the percentage of kinship between the two languages ??was 29% which indicated that the BMR and BS were the languages ??of the family from one family (stock).BMR and BS are thought to be the same prelanguage around 2,856 years ago and are estimated to have started to separate from their parent languages ??in 833 BC (calculated in 2023)

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Hello English app in improving the English listening skills of ninth-grade students at Subulussalam Junior High School. Using Coats' (2005) model in two research cycles, this classroom action research involved 23 students. The impetus for this research arose from the challenges students continuously faced when trying to understand spoken English. These challenges include fast audio speed, unfamiliar vocabulary, and difficulty concentrating during listening activities. Quantitative data collected during the study showed a significant improvement in students' listening scores, with the average score increasing significantly from 45.1 before the intervention to 83.4 afterward. This improvement can be attributed to students' increased familiarity with the interactive features of the Hello English app. These features include repetition options, feedback, audio level adjustment, and engaging gamified learning elements. Qualitative data from interviews with students and teachers highlight a significant increase in students' engagement levels, motivation, and self-confidence from using the app. The findings of this study indicate that the Hello English app effectively improves listening skills. This is achieved by promoting active and independent learning, which aligns with metacognitive strategies and gamification principles. By fostering a sense of independence and creating a student-centered learning environment, this study concludes that integrating digital applications in language teaching not only addresses common listening challenges but also supports the objectives of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum.
