Abstract

This study aimed to examine the cognitive levels of reading comprehension questions in the English for Nusantara Grade 8 textbook using Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy. Specifically, it sought to identify the extent to which the textbook promotes lower-order and higher-order thinking skills (LOTS and HOTS) through its reading comprehension tasks. A qualitative content analysis was conducted on 190 reading comprehension questions extracted from five textbook chapters and one progress check section. Each question was categorized according to the six cognitive levels outlined in Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating. Frequencies and percentages were calculated to determine the distribution of cognitive levels across chapters. The findings revealed a predominant emphasis on lower order thinking skills, with Understanding and Remembering accounting for most questions in all sections. Higher-order thinking skills were considerably underrepresented, particularly Applying (2.11%) and Creating (3.16%). The progress check section assessed only Remembering and Understanding, indicating minimal cognitive challenge. While Chapter 4 demonstrated a more balanced cognitive distribution, the overall results reflect a narrow scope of cognitive engagement. In conclusion, this study contributes to the growing body of research on textbook evaluation in EFL contexts by highlighting the imbalance in cognitive demand of reading comprehension questions. It requires the need for instructional materials and assessment practices to be reoriented toward fostering critical, analytical, and creative thinking skills among learners.

Abstract

This study aims to identify errors made by students in writing argumentative texts in English. The main focus of this study is to analyze the types of errors based on four assessment aspects: content, organization, language use, and vocabulary. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach, using data from 15 argumentative texts from 11th-grade students at MAN 1 Lamongan. Data analysis was conducted by examining each text based on these four aspects and then classifying the types of errors. The results showed that the most frequently encountered error aspect was language use, with a percentage of 62%, followed by content (14%), organization (13%), and vocabulary (11%). Errors found included incorrect grammar, irrelevant ideas, illogical paragraph structure, and inappropriate vocabulary. These findings indicate that students still struggle to construct logical and coherent arguments and use English accurately. This research is expected to provide teachers with considerations in providing more effective and focused writing lessons, as well as serve as a reference for further research to develop strategies to improve argumentative writing skills.

Abstract

Pekanbaru is one of Indonesia's urban areas inhabited by people from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This diversity is manifest in the linguistic landscape, particularly in the nomenclature of culinary enterprises. The objective of this study is to examine the use of language in culinary business names in the city of Pekanbaru using the Linguistic Landscape (LL) approach, from two fundamental functional perspectives: informational function and symbolic function. This study utilizes a qualitative research method characterized by a descriptive approach. The data was collected through a search of the "restaurant" category on the Google Maps platform, which yielded 232 data points on culinary brand names in Pekanbaru. The data was then subjected to a three-pronged analysis, with the aim of examining language usage patterns, the informational function, and the symbolic function. The analysis yielded two predominant patterns in language usage: monolingual and bilingual. In the context of informational function, culinary brand names tend to provide information about the type of food, characteristics of the dish, and price range. The findings of the study identified nine categories of culinary types from the displayed information. Conversely, from a symbolic standpoint, brand naming serves as a marker of affiliation with a distinct social identity. This study identified five forms of social identity represented through brand names, indicating the dynamics of social representation in the city's linguistic landscape.

Abstract

This qualitative case study explores native English teachers' perceptions of language learning competence among fifth-semester students in the English Education Department. Through semi-structured interviews with one native speaker from the United States participating in the guest lecture program, this research examines students' competencies across four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The findings reveal that students demonstrate excellent listening abilities but struggle with colloquial American expressions and culturally-specific phrases in structured classroom contexts. Their speaking skills are characterized as fluent with strong explanatory abilities, though confidence levels vary significantly due to Indonesian cultural values emphasizing humility and hierarchy. Reading competence is assessed as strong, particularly with narrative texts, while academic articles present greater challenges. Writing assessment was limited due to the curriculum structure, though students showed excellence in academic writing tasks. The study identifies six underlying factors shaping native speaker perceptions: dominance of formal academic language learning, influence of Indonesian cultural values on self-expression, limitations of unbalanced learning methodology, adaptive capacity in multi-skill communication, differences in cross-cultural expectations, and limited authentic learning contexts. These findings highlight the need for curriculum reform incorporating diverse authentic materials, balanced skill development, and cultural adaptation strategies to bridge the gap between formal academic learning and real-world communication needs in Indonesian English language education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to see the effect of Read-IA digital media significantly affecting mastery in reading comprehension in students. The population of this study were high school students in grade XI in Medan city and 20 students from three different classes with a total number of 26 people in one class who used the Read-AI platform were taken as samples using purposive sampling technique, which is the selection of samples based on certain criteria that are relevant to the research objectives. The sample criteria were the XI grade students who had used the Read-AI platform actively in learning activities for at least two learning meetings. Data were collected through an initial test and a final test to measure the improvement of learning outcomes and reading comprehension, as well as a structured questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS application, with paired sample t-test technique, descriptive statistics, reliability test (Cronbach's Alpha), and correlation between items. The results showed a significant increase in students' reading comprehension scores, with an average increase of 20% (p < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that AI-based adaptive technology can have a positive impact on reading instruction at the secondary level. Nevertheless, digital infrastructure limitations and the need for teacher training remain major challenges. This study contributes meaningfully to the development of modern literacy strategies that are contextual, innovative, and data-driven.

Abstract

Most students found English learning at school less interesting because it still used one-way and teacher-centered methods. Therefore, this study explored how using Quizizz could enhance students' motivation in learning English at the junior high school level. Traditional learning methods, such as lectures and practice questions without interactive media support, made students feel bored and less motivated to learn. To overcome these problems, the use of digital media was considered one solution. Quizizz is a digital learning platform accessed via smartphones and an internet connection, providing interactive features such as multiple-choice Quizizz zes, real-time feedback, points, music, and leaderboards. These elements are designed to turn conventional learning into a fun, game-like experience that promotes competition and engagement among students. Unlike traditional methods that rely on passive listening and textbook exercises, Quizizz offers a more dynamic approach that encourages active participation. Based on this potential, the present study aimed to examine how using Quizizz could enhance students' motivation and improve their learning outcomes in English subjects, especially in a junior high school context where maintaining student interest is a key challenge. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The participants in this study consisted of four English teachers and thirty-one grade 7 students. Data analysis was conducted by reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions from the collected data. The results showed that the use of Quizizz had a positive impact on increasing students' motivation and learning outcomes. The findings suggested that integrating technology in learning could be an innovative solution for improving the quality of English education in schools.

Abstract

This research examines the effectiveness of animated video media in enhancing Grade VIII students’ listening comprehension of descriptive texts at SMP Al Umar, Ogan Ilir Regency, during the 2025 academic year. A classroom action research (CAR) design was implemented over two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection stages. Data were obtained through listening comprehension tests, classroom observations, and student interviews. In the pre-cycle stage, only 12 students (40%) achieved the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) score of 70, while 18 students (60%) fell below the standard. In Cycle I, the number of students meeting the MMC increased to 22 (73%), with 8 students (27%) still underperforming. By Cycle II, mastery rose substantially to 27 students (90%), leaving only 3 students (10%) below the benchmark. These results demonstrate that the integration of animated video media significantly improves students’ listening comprehension and fosters greater engagement in English language learning, particularly in the context of descriptive text instruction.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify expressions of dislike and sorrow from the perpetrator of the murder in the case of Judge Jamaluddin's murder. The murder by Zuraida Hanum and two other perpetrators was motivated by deep dislike, insult, and revenge. Forensic Linguistics, as an applied language science, is used to analyze language and law scientifically in messages and statements related to crime case reports. The theory used is expressive speech acts from pragmatics by Searle in Yule. A qualitative descriptive method was used with data collection procedures related to the research topic. Expressive Speech Acts and feeling of trauma from Sigmund Freud's theory of impersonation trauma, interpersonal trauma, and attached trauma helps in comprehensively understanding the meaning of expressions, specifically focusing on dislike and sorrow as the causal relationship explained in detail. This research takes sentences from primary data sources in the form of court decisions and secondary data sources from books, journals, and current news. Findings of expressive acts and trauma thus conclude that the expressive speech acts experienced by the perpetrator are significant, including dislike and sorrow, and interpersonal trauma of the perpetrator dominates the reporting of this murder case.

Abstract

Therapeutic communication in English has become increasingly important in midwifery education, considering global health standards and the need for effective patient interaction across languages. Despite this, students often face barriers that hinder their ability to communicate therapeutically in English. This study investigates the internal and external barriers experienced by second-semester midwifery students in practicing therapeutic communication in English, and explores the coping strategies they employ. A qualitative descriptive design was applied with 26 second-semester midwifery students selected purposively. Data were collected through adapted questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis was used to identify categories of barriers and coping strategies. The findings revealed that internal barriers included shyness, lack of confidence, low motivation, and fear of mistakes, with shyness being the most dominant. External barriers consisted of embarrassment, limited vocabulary, lack of preparation, grammatical errors, and peer judgment, with embarrassment identified as the most critical. Coping strategies involved preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, concentration, and peer support, with preparation and relaxation as the most effective. Practicing therapeutic communication in English presents multidimensional challenges for students, combining psychological, social, and linguistic difficulties. Integrating English for Specific Purposes (ESP) modules, simulation, flipped classrooms, and peer-based learning into midwifery curricula can enhance students’ confidence, communication skills, and readiness for international clinical practice.
