Abstract

The limited availability of interactive and student-centered digital media has become one of the challenges in developing Arabic reading skills, particularly in silent reading (qirā’ah ṣāmitah). This study aims to develop an interactive digital learning medium called Miftahul Aroby to enhance students’ Arabic reading skills (maharah al-qirā’ah) and to examine its feasibility and effectiveness. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which involved needs analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through expert validation, student questionnaires, and pretest–posttest assessments. The results demonstrate that Miftahul Aroby is feasible for use, as confirmed through expert validation covering linguistic accuracy, content relevance, interface design, and pedagogical suitability. The effectiveness of the media implementation was statistically verified through a pretest–posttest design. The Shapiro–Wilk test showed that the pretest scores were not normally distributed (Sig = 0.000 < 0.05), while the posttest scores followed a normal distribution (Sig = 0.130 > 0.05). The homogeneity test indicated non-homogeneous variances (Sig = 0.005 < 0.05); therefore, the Mann–Whitney test was applied. The results revealed a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores (U = 162.000, Z = –3.014, p = 0.003 < 0.05). These findings confirm a significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension, particularly in vocabulary mastery, identification of main ideas, and understanding of explicit and implicit meanings, along with increased learning motivation during the implementation phase. In conclusion, Miftahul Aroby contributes positively to Arabic reading instruction by providing an engaging and systematic digital learning experience. This study offers a practical contribution to the development of interactive digital media in Arabic language learning and suggests future research to explore its implementation on a wider scale and in different educational contexts.

Abstract

Digital technology is developing rapidly and undergoing continuous change. Instagram is used as an information center for writing about social issues through cartoon illustrations. Cartoons are a visual way to discuss social phenomena in a humorous or satirical manner. Cartoons contain visual elements that convey meaning. The purpose of this study is to uncover the meaning contained in the cartoons on Instagram @rahma_toons. The methodology used in this study is descriptive qualitative, to determine the representation of @rahma_toons cartoons using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, which focuses on three trichotomy concepts. First, identifying relevant cartoons from the Instagram account and additional data from scientific literature sources. Second, presenting data grouped by icons, symbols, and indexes. Next, the results of the analysis are presented in detail. The findings show that cartoons from @rahma_toons convey social criticism of the negative impacts of digital technology through clear visual representations. This study emphasizes the importance of visual media literacy skills to understand critical messages in today's digital era. For further research, it is recommended to expand the object of study, not only on caricatures, and it is also recommended to use approaches from other semiotics, to enrich the perspective of visual meaning analysis.

Abstract

Vocabulary acquisition in Arabic as a foreign language within pesantren-based educational contexts continues to face persistent challenges due to the dominance of rote memorization practices that inadequately support deep semantic processing, long-term retention, and communicative readiness. This study aims to examine the pedagogical role of Google Sites–based digital instruction in moving beyond memorization by facilitating meaningful lexical processing, learner engagement, and vocabulary retention among students at SMP Bilingual Terpadu Pesantren Modern Al-Amanah Junwangi, Krian. Adopting a qualitative descriptive design, the study employed semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, involving 25 students and 5 Arabic language teachers. The findings indicate that the integration of Google Sites enhanced vocabulary retention through structured, multimodal, and contextualized content presentation, enabling deeper semantic processing compared to conventional memorization-based methods. The platform also contributed to increased learner motivation and affective engagement. However, the data reveal that students’ spontaneous oral use of newly learned vocabulary remained limited and did not develop optimally. This suggests that while Google Sites effectively supports vocabulary retention and emerging readiness for use, full communicative acquisition requires sustained pedagogical mediation and integration with oral interaction practices. The study concludes that Google Sites–based digital instruction functions effectively as a supportive tool for Arabic vocabulary learning beyond mechanical memorization, yet its success is contingent upon teacher scaffolding and alignment with communicative language teaching principles. This research provides empirical insights into digital Arabic pedagogy in bilingual pesantren settings and recommends further investigation into long-term learning outcomes and the integration of digital platforms with productive language use.

Abstract

This study examines the use of indirect expressions in Nizar Qabbani’s poem “Uḥibbuki Uḥibbuki wal-Bāqiyātu Taʾtī” to uncover the multidimensional meanings of love conveyed through symbolic and figurative language. As a leading figure in modern Arabic poetry, Qabbani employs indirect expressions to represent emotional depth, psychological nuance, and humanistic values within the experience of love. This study aims to identify the types of indirect expressions used in the poem namely talwih, ta‘ridh, ramz, and ima’/isyarah and to analyze how these expressions articulate the dimensions of love proposed by Erich Fromm, including care, responsibility, respect, and knowledge. The scope of this study is limited to a stylistic and textual analysis of a single poem using the framework of balaghah and humanistic psychology. This research uses a qualitative content analysis method. The primary data consist of Qabbani’s poetic text, while the secondary data are drawn from scholarly works on balaghah, modern Arabic poetry, and Erich Fromm’s theory of love. Data collection was conducted through close reading and systematic note-taking, followed by data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that Qabbani’s indirect expressions form layered meanings of love that reflect Fromm’s concept of productive love. These expressions enhance the poem’s aesthetic quality while simultaneously deepening its psychological and humanistic resonance. This study contributes to the field of modern Arabic literary studies by integrating rhetorical analysis with psychological theory. Future research is encouraged to examine a broader corpus of Qabbani’s poetry, apply comparative approaches, or employ interdisciplinary perspectives to further explore representations of love in modern Arabic literature.

Abstract

Arabic reading instruction in Indonesian secondary schools still faces major challenges due to the dominance of teacher centered and conventional learning practices that limit students’ engagement, communication, and critical thinking. In response to 21stcentury learning demands that emphasize communication and critical-thinking skills, this study proposes an integrative instructional model that combines the role play method with communicative and critical thinking approaches to enhance Arabic-reading skills. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the role play method through a communicative and critical thinking approach on reading skills. This research is a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design. The participants were seventh grade students of Madrasah Tsanawiyyah Nahdlatul Ulama 19 Protomulyo Kaliwungu South selected through purposive sampling and divided into experiment and control classes. Data were collected through a reading comprehension test and analyzed using the Mann Whitney U test. The result indicated a significant difference in reading skill improvement between the two groups, with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed)= 0.000<0.05. This study contributes empirical evidence by repositioning reading from a passive activity into an interactive and analytical learning process through role play based instruction. The findings are expected to broaden the application of role play beyond productive skills and provide a practical pedagogical model aligned with 21stcentury competencies. Future research is recommended to examine this model in wider educational contexts, integrate digital learning tools, and conduct longitudinal and qualitative studies to explore its long-term impact on Arabic-reading development.

Abstract

The use of Fuṣḥa and 'Āmiyah in the context of Islamic higher education in Egypt creates complex linguistic dynamics for Indonesian students at Al-Azhar University. This study aims to analyze the relationship among the choice of Arabic language varieties, academic demands, and students' social adaptation in a real diglossic environment. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 25 Indonesian students and subsequently analyzed using content analysis from a sociolinguistic perspective. The results show that Fuṣḥa functions not only as a formal academic medium but also as a symbol of scholarly authority and legitimacy of academic identity. At the same time,‘Āmiyah becomes the main instrument in building social relations, understanding local culture, and achieving practical communication effectiveness. The continuous interaction between the two varieties fosters adaptive communicative competence, characterized by strategic code-switching, sensitivity to social norms, and pragmatic flexibility. These findings show that Arabic diglossia functions as a productive linguistic resource rather than merely a barrier to learning. This study provides a conceptual contribution to the study of Arabic sociolinguistics. It offers pedagogical implications for the development of Arabic language learning for foreign speakers that align with sociolinguistic realities.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the prolonged socio-political conflict experienced by the Palestinian people, which has resulted in displacement, loss of sovereignty, and humanitarian suffering. In this context, literature particularly poetry functions not only as an aesthetic expression but also as a medium of reflection and resistance against oppressive realities. This study aims to reveal the image of Palestine in the poems Li-Bilādinā and Wa Lanā Bilād by Mahmoed Darwish using Alan Swingewood’s sociological approach to literature. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a historical-sociological approach to examine the relationship between literary texts and the social, historical, and cultural contexts that underlie them. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis was conducted through three stages: data reduction, comparison of poetic quotations and interpretations from relevant references, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that Li-Bilādinā and Wa Lanā Bilād portray Palestine as a sacred yet oppressed land that has lost its sovereignty, identity, and living space due to colonization. In Li-Bilādinā, Palestine is depicted as a holy land marked by suffering, dispossession, and wounded identity, whereas Wa Lanā Bilād presents Palestine as an inner homeland and collective hope that survives in memory despite physical loss. Based on Alan Swingewood's sociological perspective on literature, these two poems reflect three main aspects of the socio-political reality of Palestine, namely territorial and sovereignty conflicts, humanitarian crises resulting from expulsion and violence, and economic crises as a result of structural colonization. Thus, this study confirms that Mahmoed Darwish's work is not merely an aesthetic expression, but a social document that raises awareness of the suffering and struggle of the Palestinian people and calls for the importance of global solidarity for justice and humanity. Therefore, this research contributes to the field of literary sociology by demonstrating the relevance of poetry as a medium for representing socio-political realities and by encouraging further studies on literary works from conflict zones using interdisciplinary perspectives.

Abstract

Learning Arabic grammar (nahwu) is often perceived by secondary school students as difficult and abstract due to its rule-based nature and the predominance of teacher-centered instructional approaches, which frequently limit student engagement and meaningful practice. This study investigates the effectiveness of an imlā’-based digital audio podcast in improving students’ mastery of basic Arabic grammar (nahwu). This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a digital audio writing podcast based on imlā’ in improving students’ mastery of basic nahwu, specifically in classifying Arabic word categories (ism, fiʿl, and ḥarf). The scope of this research focuses on evaluating learning outcomes and students’ learning experiences when using podcast-based instruction compared to conventional teaching. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group, the research involved 44 tenth-grade students divided into an experimental class that used podcast media and a control class that received conventional instruction. Students completed pre- and post-tests that assessed their ability to classify Arabic word categories ism, fiʿl, and ḥarf supported by an interview questionnaire exploring their learning experience. As most datasets failed to meet normality assumptions based on the Shapiro–Wilk test, the Wilcoxon Signed Rank and Mann–Whitney U tests were employed. The findings show significant improvement in both groups; however, the experimental group demonstrated a stronger gain, increasing from a mean score of 62 to 87, compared with the control group’s increase from 71 to 85. Despite this improvement, the Mann–Whitney analysis indicated no significant difference between the two groups at pretest (p = 0.280) or posttest (p = 0.133), suggesting comparable score distributions. These findings demonstrate that imlā’-based podcast media significantly enhances students’ grammatical mastery and offers a flexible digital learning alternative. This study contributes empirically by demonstrating that integrating imlā’-based podcast media can effectively support Arabic grammar learning in digital contexts. Future research is recommended to explore long-term learning effects and apply this model to broader nahwu topics and larger sample populations.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the meanings of the terms ‘aql, qalb, nafs, and rūḥ in the Qur’an, which are often understood separately or equated. The main problem is the tendency for partial readings that simplify the functions of these four terms. This study aims to systematically explain the differences in function and the relationships between the meanings of these four terms. The method used is a qualitative literature study based on the semantic approach of the Qur’an to the verses of the Qur’an containing these four terms, which are analyzed through determining the basic meaning, syntagmatic and paradigmatic relationships, and triangulation with previous interpretations and studies. The results show that ‘aql functions as the activity of thinking and understanding, qalb as the center of moral awareness and acceptance of truth, nafs as the subject of moral responsibility, and rūḥ as the principle of life derived from God’s commands. These four terms form an interrelated system of meaning and are not synonymous. It can be concluded that a relational understanding of these terms contributes to the study of the meaning of the Qur’an and has pedagogical implications in learning that emphasizes conceptual and contextual understanding, not just literal translation.

Abstract

Death in literary texts is frequently represented in an implicit manner through symbolic signs that require semiotic interpretation to access their underlying meanings. In Arabic short stories, death commonly operates as an existential motif shaped by language and narrative symbolism. This study seeks to examine the icons, indices, and symbols that construct the representation of death in Taufiq al-Hakim’s short story Daqqat al-Sa‘ah. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with reading and note-taking techniques, the analysis is conducted using Charles Sanders Peirce’s triadic semiotic model, which consists of representamen, object, and interpretant. The findings indicate that death is articulated through recurring signs such as the sound of a ticking clock, barking dogs, specific temporal markers, power outages, medical authority, and the sudden death of Hamadah. These signs collectively generate an understanding of death as an existential condition beyond human control. This research contributes to literary semiotic studies by emphasizing death as the central semiotic structure of the narrative and reaffirming the applicability of Peirce’s semiotics in interpreting implicit meanings in Arabic literary texts. Future research may expand this approach to other Arabic works or integrate semiotic analysis with psychological and existential perspectives.
