Abstract

Academic burnout is a common issue among students, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment due to excessive academic pressure. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of group counseling services using the thought-stopping technique in reducing academic burnout among eighth-grade students at SMP Swasta PAB 3 Saentis. Using a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test post-test control group design, the study involved 20 students identified as having high to very high levels of academic burnout. Ten students were assigned to the experimental group, receiving group counseling with thought-stopping techniques, while the remaining ten in the control group received only informational services. Data were collected through a validated Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov Two Independent Samples Test. The results showed a significant decrease in academic burnout scores in the experimental group (Wilcoxon Z = -2.805, p = 0.005), with most post-test scores falling into the low and moderate categories, while the control group remained in the moderate to high range. The difference between the two groups was also statistically significant (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Z = 1.789, p = 0.003). These findings indicate that group counseling using thought-stopping is effective in reducing academic burnout. The study suggests that incorporating the thought-stopping technique into school counseling programs can effectively enhance students' psychological well-being and reduce academic burnout. Practical implications include recommendations for school counselors to adopt thought-stopping as an intervention to address negative thought patterns contributing to burnout.

Abstract

Academic stress is a prevalent psychological concern among junior high school students, particularly due to the increasing academic demands and the widespread adoption of online learning. This form of stress can impair students' academic performance and compromise their psychological well-being. Consequently, there is a growing need for counseling interventions that are both effective and adaptable to the digital learning environment. The present study examines the effectiveness of online Solution Focused Brief Counseling (SFBC) in alleviating academic stress in junior high school students. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group structure, the study involved 10 students assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group participated in four online counseling sessions, while the control group received no intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Given the small sample size, non-parametric analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to compare pretest and posttest scores in the experimental group. Results demonstrated a significant reduction in academic stress scores within the experimental group, decreasing from an average of 120.8 to 101.6, whereas the control group exhibited an increase from 128.6 to 131.8. The Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test yielded a statistically significant result (p = 0.042, p < 0.05), confirming the efficacy of the intervention. These findings suggest that online SFBC represents a viable and effective counseling strategy for mitigating academic stress among junior high school students, offering a flexible psychological intervention well-suited to the demands of distance learning and digital education contexts

Abstract

This study aims to develop a personal adjustment measurement tool specifically designed for santri (Islamic boarding school students) in pondok pesantren (Islamic boarding schools). The adjustment process for santri involves unique challenges arising from the boarding system, pesantren culture, and both internal and external demands, which differ from those faced in regular school settings. The instrument was developed based on Schneiders’ (1955) Adjustment Theory, with six dimensions contextualized to the santri experience: academic, social, dormitory life, emotional, moral, and sexual adjustment. A quantitative approach was employed following the scale development procedures proposed by DeVellis and Cohen & Swerdlik (2017). The initial instrument, consisting of 26 questionnaire items, underwent readability testing with 30 santri, followed by expert judgment from four professionals for content validity. Empirical testing was conducted with 300 santri from four pesantren in South Tangerang using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and reliability testing. The results demonstrated a good model fit (CFI = 0.95; RMSEA = 0.056; SRMR = 0.059) and high reliability (α = 0.877). The instrument was proven to be valid and reliable for measuring santri adjustment and may serve as an early identification tool and the basis for psychological interventions in pesantren. The PASS can be practically used by school counselors, boarding supervisors, and Islamic educators to monitor santri adjustment and provide timely psychosocial support. This study also contributes theoretically to the development of educational psychology grounded in Islamic values in Indonesia.

Abstract

Academic stress is a common psychological state among students, particularly in Vocational High Schools, arising when academic demands overwhelm an individual's coping abilities. Left unmanaged, this stress can negatively affect students' psychological well-being and academic performance. This study aimed to develop a humorous "Snakes and Ladders" game and a group guidance service guide to help reduce academic stress levels in vocational high school students. The research employed the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model, encompassing needs analysis, product design, expert validation, limited testing, and field implementation. Research subjects included subject matter experts, media experts, potential users (guidance and counseling teachers), and students from SMK Negeri 13 Malang. Data collection tools consisted of validation sheets, evaluation questionnaires, and participant reflections. Results indicated an average score of 1.00, demonstrating that the developed game media and guides had a "very high" level of feasibility in terms of accuracy, usability, ease of use, and appeal. In conclusion, the humorous "Snakes and Ladders" game media and group guidance guides are highly suitable for reducing academic stress among vocational high school students

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate a group counseling guide using the cognitive behavioral approach integrated with ta’lim muta’alim values to reduce bullying behavior among Madrasah Aliyah (MA) students. The background highlights the urgent need to address bullying, particularly within boarding school contexts, where students also function as santri, requiring culturally and religiously responsive interventions. The research adopted the Borg & Gall (1983) Research and Development (R&D) model, involving validation by experts in guidance and counseling, educational media, Islamic religious education, and end-users. The instrument was assessed using Gregory’s (2015) inter-rater agreement model to ensure accuracy, usefulness, practicality, and appeal. The results showed that the guide achieved a perfect agreement index (1.00) across all validation domains, indicating excellent relevance and applicability. Qualitative feedback from validators supported the integration of ta’lim muta’alim values such as discipline, respect, humility, and compassion as highly compatible with cognitive-behavioral techniques. The findings emphasize the novelty of culturally contextualized counseling by blending Western psychological methods with pesantren-based moral education. While the guide is highly effective for MA students, especially those in Islamic boarding schools, broader implementation in general high schools may require cultural adaptation. This research contributes to the innovation of counseling practices in Indonesia by offering a moral-religious framework that addresses behavioral problems like bullying in a holistic manner.

Abstract

One of the periods of growth and development that individuals will face is adolescence. Adolescence can be referred to as a period of identity search, where adolescents are required to develop self-awareness. This is especially true for students, who live their lives according to strong Islamic and social values. Students with low self-awareness face difficulties in daily life, struggling to recognize and reflect on their strengths. In addition, violations of the cottage such as leaving during class time, choosing to go to the canteen during class time and smoking behavior in the canteen are still widely seen. The purpose of this study is to develop the ROPUTRAS (Spinning Wheel of students Self-Awareness) game as a tool to enhance self-awareness among MTs students. The research and development procedure adopts the ADDIE model, implemented in five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The results of expert and potential user evaluations were analyzed using the Inter-rater-agreement method. Additionally, the effectiveness test used the Wilcoxon signed-rank test analysis. Based on the validation results by subject matter experts, media experts, and potential users, it can be concluded that this guide has very high validity, referring to the aspect of acceptability. Therefore, it can be concluded that the ROPUTRAS game media product for developing self-awareness among MTs students is suitable for use. In addition, violations of the cottage such as leaving during class time, choosing to go to the canteen during class time and smoking behavior in the canteen are still widely seen.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to adapt the Student Engagement Questionnaire (SEQ) into the Indonesian version. The assessment that is adapted is the Student Engagement Questionnaire (SEQ) formulated by Reeve & Tseng, which consists of 22 items across four dimensions: agentic, behavior, emotion, and cognitive. The adaptation procedure follows the International Test Commission (ITC) Guidelines for Translating and Adapting Tests.  The sequence consists of six stages: (1) Initial development; (2) Test construction; (3) Validation; (4) Administration; (5) Scoring and interpreting; (6) Documentation phase. However, this study only reached the scoring and interpreting stage. Therefore, future researchers should continue similar studies through to the documentation stage. In this research, 2 translators, 2 psychometrics experts for content validation, 10 Islamic Junior High School students for readability assessments, and 385 Islamic Junior High School students for construct validation of the instrument are involved. The content validity test resulted in a total mean of 1.34 for the similarity aspect and 1.3 for the comparability aspect, with a s-CVI value of 1.00. The construct validity test, conducted using CFA, yielded results with CFI 0.931, TLI 0.922, RMSEA 0.062, and SRMR 0.045. Furthermore, the Cronbach's Alpha value was obtained at 0.94. Therefore, this instrument has been demonstrated to be both valid and reliable for assessing student engagement

Abstract

The escalating prevalence of psychological issues in modern society underscores the need for counseling approaches that transcend purely rational and behavioral strategies to encompass the spiritual dimension of human experience. This article aims to conceptualize a foundational model of spiritual counseling rooted in Buya Hamka's Tazkiyatun an-Nafs framework, presenting an integrative alternative deeply embedded in local values. Employing a qualitative-conceptual approach, this study proposes a three-phase counseling structure: pre-counseling, core process, and post-counseling. This model integrates the principles of Takhalli (purifying the heart from negative influences), Tahalli (adorning the heart with positive values), and Tajalli (guiding individuals to rediscover deeper meaning and purpose in life). The model emphasizes counseling as a process of spiritual recovery aimed at alleviating psychological problems, facilitated through personalized, reflective, and transformative guidance. While conceptual, this article significantly contributes to the contextualization of Islamic counseling and lays the groundwork for future empirical research.
