Abstract

Effectiveness of STEAM-based PJBL Learning Model (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) to Improve Students' Critical Thinking Skills. One of the goals of national education in the 21st century was to make students who have critical thinking skills. However, there are still many facts that students' critical thinking skills in Indonesia are still low. Therefore, renewal in learning was needed to improve these critical thinking skills. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the PjBL-STEAM learning model in improving students' critical thinking skills and the improvement of critical thinking skills in each indicator. This research used quantitative method with pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest type. The subjects in this study were VIII grade students in one of the junior high schools in Garut Regency who had not learned the material of effort and energy and had never applied the PjBL-STEAM learning model. The instrument used was a description question with a total of 13 questions to measure critical thinking skills based on the indicators put forward by Ennis with a validity result of 0.51 and reliability of 0.78. The data collection techniques used were interviews, tests, namely pretest and posttest. The results of data analysis showed an increase in the average score from pretest to posttest by 48.5. The N-Gain test showed a value of 0.71 with a high category, which means that PjBL-STEAM learning is able to improve students' critical thinking skills, with the results of the indicator providing a simple explanation experiencing the highest increase with an N-Gain value of 0.71, and the conclusion indicator experiencing the lowest increase with an N-Gain value of 0.67. Abstract

Analysis of Students’ Reasoning Levels in Physics Learning Based on Peer Instruction Guided Inquiry. This study aims to analyze the level of student reasoning in peer instruction guided inquiry (PIGI) based physics learning. This learning design is used to encourage students' active participation and develop reasoning skills through peer discussion, and guided inquiry. This research is a descriptive study with a sample of 30 high school students in Bandung. Students’ reasoning levels were assessed based on their responses to Concept Test I and Concept Test II, conducted before and after the guided inquiry sessions. The test instrument used was a ranking task exercise. Students’ answers were analyzed and categorized using a reasoning level rubric. The findings indicate that the majority of students demonstrated reasoning at Level 2 (subfunctional) and Level 3 (near-functional). At these levels, students were able to identify relevant variables influencing the given phenomena, but their explanations revealed limited conceptual understanding, leading to difficulties in applying knowledge to different contexts. A general improvement in reasoning level was observed, with most students showing progress from Concept Test I to Concept Test II. These results suggest that the PIGI approach holds potential for enhancing students’ scientific reasoning. However, complementary instructional strategies are needed to support students in analyzing and drawing conclusions from experimental data, enabling them to construct deeper conceptual understanding.

Abstract

The attitude toward science has been studied among science education researchers for over 50 years. This study aims to test the validity of BRAINS (Behaviors, Related Attitudes, and Intentions toward Science) instrument using the IRT analysis and measure science attitude among lower secondary school students by comparing gender and socioeconomic status (SES). About 30 items of BRAINS instrument was administered to 1001 students. IRT analysis was run using TAM package in R to examine the instrument dimensionality, the item fit properties, the EAP (Expected A Posteriori) reliability, and WLE (Weighted Maximum Likelihood Estimation) reliability while LORDIF package in R was used to test the generalizability. Later, two-way ANOVA and clustering of students’ response were performed using the SPSS and mclust package in R, respectively. Generally, IRT analysis indicated that the BRAINS instrument is proper to measure the students’ attitude toward science. BRAINS consisted of five dimensions, and most BRAINS items had a good fit with the IRT. Item reliability was good in all dimensions, while person reliability was fair in two dimensions. The generalizability test showed that some items were flagged for differential item functioning (DIF). Regarding attitude towards science, females had a higher attitude towards science than males, significantly in behavior, intention and normative dimensions. Furthermore, a higher science attitude was found among low SES than high SES students, although this was only significant in control dimension. Clustering analysis revealed two groups of students based on their attitude towards science (those with high and low scores) and most of students in this study are classified into low science attitude group. The findings of this study imply that specific actions are needed to improve students’ attitudes towards science, especially among students from less privileged backgrounds. Schools could adopt inclusive, student-centered, and inquiry-based science teaching to make science more engaging. Keywords: Attitude toward science, BRAINS, IRT analysis, Secondary school, Validity.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of project-based learning (PjBL) on students’ motivation in science learning. The participants consisted of 31 eighth-grade students from a public school in Bandung, West Java, comprising 16 male and 15 female students. The research employed a classroom action research design, with data collected through questionnaires and classroom observations. Specifically, students’ motivation was measured using the Students’ Motivation Toward Science Learning (SMTSL) questionnaire, which encompasses six dimensions: self-efficacy, active learning strategies, science learning value, performance goal, achievement goal, and learning environment stimulation. The findings revealed that students’ motivation levels in science learning during Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 were 69% and 68%, respectively, both categorized as “good.” However, the data also indicated a lack of significant improvement in motivation despite the implementation of the PjBL approach. This stagnation suggests that further exploration is needed to understand the underlying factors contributing to the limited impact of PjBL on students' motivational development. Potential areas of inquiry include the quality of project implementation, student engagement dynamics, and contextual factors within the learning environment that may have influenced the outcomes.
