Abstract

Background: Food waste remains a significant challenge in Indonesia, particularly within urban areas. This study evaluated the impact of educational interventions regarding food expiration dates on mothers’ knowledge and food waste behavior in urban households in the Tanah Sareal District, Bogor City Methods: A quasi-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design was implemented with 55 housewives. The intervention used posters and balanced nutrition modules that emphasized food storage and expiration date labeling. Data were collected through a validated questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-tests, and chi-square tests. Result: Results indicated a significant increase in mothers’ knowledge, from 26.87 ± 3.91 before the intervention to 29.16 ± 1.31 after the intervention (p=0.0001). Food waste behavior also improved, as the average amount of food waste decreased from 73.44 ± 48.06 grams to 31.99 ± 27.30 grams (p=0.0001). Additionally, a significant association between knowledge and food waste behavior was observed following the intervention (p=0.022). Conclusion: These findings indicate that education about food expiration dates can enhance knowledge and reduce food-waste behavior among urban households. Community-based educational interventions employing simple visual media may offer an effective strategy for reducing food waste and promoting sustainable household food management.

Abstract

Background: Stunting is a form of chronic undernutrition that impairs children’s linear growth and development, particularly during the first 1,000 days of life. It remains a major public health problem in many developing countries. Stunting is defined as a length- or height-for-age z-score below −2 standard deviations according to the World Health Organization child growth standards. Environmental health conditions may indirectly contribute to the occurrence of stunting. This study aimed to examine the association between environmental health factors and stunting among children in the working area of the Batang Beruh Health Center, Sidikalang. Methods: This study employed an analytical observational design with a quantitative cross-sectional approach. A total of 64 respondents were recruited using convenience sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with the chi-square test.. Result: Drinking water sources were significantly associated with stunting status (p < 0.001). A significant association was also found between the physical quality of drinking water and stunting (p < 0.001). In contrast, drinking water treatment was not significantly associated with stunting (p = 0.366). Latrine ownership and waste management were significantly associated with stunting status (both p < 0.001). Conclusion: Drinking water sources, the physical quality of drinking water, latrine ownership, and waste management were significantly associated with stunting. However, drinking water treatment was not associated with stunting. Health center personnel should strengthen community education regarding safe water, sanitation, and appropriate waste management practices as part of stunting prevention efforts among children under five.

Abstract

Background: Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is a directly transmitted disease and poses a major threat to human resource development, thus requiring more serious attention from all parties. The objective of this study is to analyze the determinants of treatment non-compliance among pulmonary tuberculosis patients in South Nias Regency. Methods: This study uses a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study used stratified sampling of 6 community health centers with the highest number of TB cases. The sample size was 72 respondents with pulmonary tuberculosis in the working area of the South Nias Regency Health Office. Results: Based on the analysis results, knowledge (p=0.003), duration of treatment (p=0.004), medication supervision (p=0.000) are related to the support of traditional leaders (p=0.001) towards tuberculosis treatment adherence in South Nias district. Conclusions: The recommendations in this study are for health workers to collaborate with various sectors, especially traditional leaders, families, and community organizations, to help provide education and reduce stigma in order to support TB treatment adherence and strengthen medication supervision (PMO) to prevent drug resistance, which can lead to prolonged treatment and the risk of TB transmission.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents in Indonesia experience a dual burden of malnutrition. Body image perception during adolescence can contribute to unhealthy eating behaviors. However, limited evidence exists regarding body image and its association with nutritional status in Indonesia’s island communities. This study analyzes differences in body image perception and nutritional status by gender, age group, and Body Mass Index (BMI) among adolescents in Sangihe District, Indonesia Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2025 to March 2026 and included 787 adolescents aged 10–18 years, selected through convenience sampling from accessible schools across the island. Result: Most respondents exhibited normal nutritional status (68.7%), while 23.6% were overweight and 7.6% were underweight. No significant differences were observed in body image scores (p=0.731) or BAZ values (p=0.831) between males and females. A significant difference in body image scores was found between the puberty and post-puberty age groups (p=0.013). No significant differences in body image scores were identified across nutritional categories (p=0.866). Conclusion: In this island context, puberty appears to be a more influential factor in body image than gender or nutritional status. These findings underscore the importance of holistic, developmentally sensitive, and gender-inclusive health promotion programs tailored to the unique context of adolescents on Indonesian islands.

Abstract

Hypertension remains a public health issue that significantly contributes to increased rates of morbidity, disability, and mortality. This condition is often referred to as a “silent killer” because many patients are unaware of their condition until complications arise. This study aims to determine the general profile of hypertension prevalence among outpatients at Syekh Yusuf Gowa Regional General Hospital in 2025. The study employed a descriptive quantitative design with a retrospective approach through the analysis of medical records. The study population consisted of all outpatients diagnosed with hypertension during the period of January–December 2025. A total sampling technique was used, yielding a sample of 54 respondents. Data were analyzed univariately and presented in the form of frequency distributions and percentages. The results of the study showed that the largest age group was 46–55 years old, comprising 18 respondents (33.3%); the majority were female, comprising 31 respondents (57.4%); the most common educational level was high school, comprising 19 respondents (35.2%); and the most common occupation was homemaker, comprising 17 respondents (31.5%). Based on blood pressure classification, stage 1 hypertension was found in 28 respondents (51.9%), stage 2 hypertension in 19 respondents (35.2%), and hypertensive crisis in 7 respondents (12.9%). The most common comorbid condition was diabetes mellitus, affecting 14 respondents (25.9%). The conclusions of this study indicate that the prevalence of hypertension among outpatients at Syekh Yusuf Gowa Regional General Hospital is dominated by the pre-elderly age group, women, and stage 1 hypertension. Enhanced education, routine screening, and risk factor management are needed to prevent further complications.

Abstract

Background: Opioid use disorder is a significant public health issue, and adherence to Methadone Maintenance Therapy (MMT) is critical for successful treatment. Self-reported adherence can be biased, so objective laboratory measures are valuable. Urinary morphine detection by Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) indicates recent illicit opioid use and may signal lower methadone adherence. This study examined the association between GC-MS-confirmed urinary morphine detection and methadone adherence in MMT patients. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study included 20 MMT patients at the PTRM Clinic of Gambir Public Health Center, selected by quota sampling. Urinary morphine was measured using GC-MS. Treatment adherence was assessed with a modified Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (MMAS-8) and medical records. Data were analyzed using the Fisher–Freeman–Halton Exact Test, with Cramer’s V describing the strength of association. Result: Urinary morphine was detected in 2 participants (10%), while 18 (90%) had results below the detection limit. High, moderate, and low adherence were observed in 65%, 30%, and 5% of participants, respectively. The Fisher–Freeman–Halton Exact Test showed a statistically significant association between urinary morphine detection and methadone adherence categories (p = 0.032). Although Cramer’s V was 0.733, this result should be interpreted with caution due to the small number of positive cases. Conclusion: GC-MS-confirmed urinary morphine detection was significantly associated with lower methadone adherence and may complement behavioral and clinical assessments by providing objective evidence of recent illicit opioid use. These findings are preliminary, and larger multicenter longitudinal studies are needed to confirm their clinical relevance.

Abstract

Early postpartum emotional disturbance remains an important maternal health concern following cesarean section because postoperative pain, delayed physical recovery, and childbirth-related psychological stress may increase maternal emotional vulnerability during the puerperium. If not recognized early, these emotional disturbances may interfere with breastfeeding adaptation, infant care, maternal well-being, and mother–infant bonding. This systematic review aimed to identify the prevalence and dominant determinants of early postpartum emotional disturbance among mothers after cesarean section. A systematic literature search was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines using PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar for peer-reviewed articles published between 2016 and 2026. After title screening, abstract screening, and full-text eligibility assessment, 33 studies were included in the final synthesis. The reviewed evidence demonstrated that emotional disturbances during the early postpartum period among mothers after cesarean section were consistently reported across different populations. Psychosocial determinants, particularly antenatal anxiety, previous emotional vulnerability, maternal stress, and inadequate husband or family support, emerged as the most dominant contributing factors. Clinical contributors such as emergency cesarean procedures, postoperative pain, sleep disturbance, hormonal fluctuation, and delayed postoperative recovery further intensified maternal emotional instability. The findings indicate that postpartum care after cesarean section should integrate early psychological screening, effective postoperative symptom management, and family-centered emotional support to reduce the risk of persistent maternal psychological disorders.

Abstract

Background: Optimizing breast milk production in the early postpartum period is critical, given significant discrepancies between national lactation targets and actual field coverage. Early Breastfeeding Initiation (IMD) within the first two hours after delivery is a key factor in long-term lactation success; however, postpartum stress frequently delays milk production and serves as a primary barrier. This study employed a quantitative, pre-experimental, posttest-only control group design. Acupressure at SI 14 and GB 21 points was administered to the intervention group during the fourth stage of labor, while the control group received standard care. The majority of participants were of reproductive age, with 70% aged within the typical reproductive range and 60% having higher parity. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference in breast milk production between the intervention and control groups (p = 0.007, < 0.05). These findings indicate that acupressure at SI 14 and GB 21 points significantly enhances the initial release of breast milk in postpartum mothers during the fourth stage of labor.

Abstract

Background: Baby blues, also referred to as postpartum blues or postpartum distress syndrome, is an emotional state experienced by mothers following the birth of their first child. This condition can adversely affect both the mother and the infant. Multiple factors, such as insufficient family support, are believed to contribute to the rising incidence of baby blues. Given the prevalence of these cases, disseminating information through expert systems is essential. The Certainty Factor (CF) method is commonly employed in expert systems to address the uncertainty inherent in expert assessments. This study seeks to facilitate early diagnosis of psychological disorders in postpartum mothers by calculating a weighted symptom score, which produces a CF score to guide diagnosis and intervention. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and a review of relevant literature on postpartum blues. The research methodology follows the waterfall model, encompassing needs analysis, system design, system implementation, and system testing. The expert system application utilizes the Certainty Factor method. This system is anticipated to support the community by enabling early detection of psychological disorders in postpartum mothers.

Abstract

Background: Hospital healthcare services are required to produce positive outcomes, including reducing patient mortality rates. The Early Warning System (EWS) is used to detect early deterioration in patient conditions so that interventions can be administered more quickly. This study aims to analyze the factors associated with the accuracy of nurses’ EWS scoring and patient clinical outcomes at RSUD Mitra Sehat. Methods: This study was a quantitative study using an analytical observational design with a prospective cohort approach. Primary data were collected through questionnaires to analyze the effects of the King’s Interaction System and TOUS factors on the accuracy of nurses’ EWS scoring and their association with patient clinical outcomes at RSUD Mitra Sehat. Result: The results of the logistic regression test showed that the p-value for nurses’ knowledge was greater than the α value (0.05), at 0.220, with Exp(β) = 0.358. Nurses’ transactions had a p-value of 0.371, with Exp(β) = 2.116. These results indicate that both variables did not have a significant effect and were not statistically strong enough. Conclusion: Nevertheless, these factors still play a role. Patient clinical outcomes are more strongly influenced by underlying clinical conditions, comorbidities, disease severity, and limited medical resources, all of which can lead to delays in intervention.
