Abstract

The objective of this study is to describe the types of illocutionary acts contained in the lyrics of the song Tanpa Cinta by Tiara Andini. A qualitative descriptive method is used to describe in detail the various types of speech acts actualized through the lyrics of the song. Data were obtained from Tiara Andini's official YouTube account related to the lyrics of Tanpa Cinta using the listening and note-taking technique. Using a pragmatic perspective as a framework for analysis, specifically Searle's (1979) theory of illocutionary acts, and based on the data analyzed, the following types of speech acts were found: A pragmatic perspective was used as the analytical framework, specifically Searle's (1979) theory of illocutionary acts. Based on the data analyzed, the types of speech acts found in the lyrics of Tiara Andini's song Tanpa Cinta were assertive, directive, expressive, and commissive. In this case, assertive speech acts dominate over other speech acts, and no declarative speech acts were found. The dominance of assertive speech acts occurs because the lyrics of Tanpa Cinta largely represent the speaker's depiction of the situation, beliefs, and assessments of the relationship they are experiencing, so that the speaker is committed to the truth of what they are saying. This indicates the speaker's effort to convey information or state a condition with a commitment to the truth of the utterance.

Abstract

This research explores the profound significance of visual semiotics in contemporary horror cinema, where atmospheric construction has become a primary tool for evoking psychological terror. Despite the success of elevated horror, a literature gap remains regarding the granular semiotic analysis of how specific technical elements specifically color and lighting function as a sign system to maintain sustained dread. This study aims to identify the dominant semiotic elements of color and lighting in James Wan’s The Conjuring (2013) and analyze their effects in creating a harrowing atmosphere. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design with a semiotic approach, the study examines 20 purposively selected scenes through Roland Barthes’ three orders of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. Key findings reveal that the dominant semiotic markers include a desaturated color palette dominated by dark brown, greenish-grey, and black and low-key lighting techniques such as chiaroscuro and backlighting. Denotatively, these elements signify historical periodization and low visibility; connotatively, they signify spiritual corruption, isolation, and vulnerability. Furthermore, the research identifies that these visual signs coalesce into a cinematic "myth" of the domestic space as a predatory organism. The study concludes that the film’s efficacy in inducing dread is a deliberate semiotic construction; the empirical data shows that 'visual uncertainty' produced by the strategic obscuring of shadows through chiaroscuro and negative space compels the audience to project internal fears into the frame's unlit areas. These findings imply that in atmospheric horror, the manipulation of the viewer's perception through chromatic and luminant signs is more critical for emotional impact than explicit narrative or physical violence.

Abstract

Perception of speech is a fundamental skill in EFL learning that is very challenging for Indonesian learners due to the limitations of their L1 vocal system. Although previous studies have mostly used quantitative accuracy measurements, qualitative exploration of authentic experiences in the classroom is still limited, especially for university-level EFL students in the context of psycholinguistics. This study investigates the difficulties of fifth-semester English Education students at Nias University in perceiving minimal vowel pairs through a descriptive qualitative design. Data from 15 purposive sampling participants were collected through a minimal pairs listening test (20 items), semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations. The results show the highest error rates of 87% for /ɪ/–/iː/ (ship-sheep) and 80% for /ʊ/–/uː/ (full-fool), caused by the Indonesian vowel system, which has only five monophthongs without length/tension contrast. Internal factors included L1 phonological interference and cognitive load, while external factors included poor classroom audio quality and environmental noise. Students relied more on context-based top-down strategies than bottom-up phonetic analysis. These findings reveal patterns of vowel perception difficulties characteristic of Indonesian EFL in an authentic learning context.

Abstract

Figurative language plays a fundamental role in song lyrics as it enables songwriters to convey complex emotions, personal experiences, and deeper meanings beyond literal interpretation. This study aims to identify the types of figurative language found in Henry Moodie's song album Mood Swings and to explain how those figurative expressions are realized within the lyrics. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from the lyrics of thirteen songs in the album, obtained from Spotify, and analyzed using Perrine's (1992) theory of figurative language. The findings reveal that five types of figurative language are found in the album, namely metaphor, simile, personification, symbol, and hyperbole, with a total of 40 instances identified. Symbol appears as the most dominant type with 10 instances, followed by hyperbole (9), metaphor (8), personification (7), and simile (6). The analysis demonstrates that each type serves a distinct expressive function in conveying emotional depth and personal experience throughout the lyrics. These findings indicate that figurative language is not merely a stylistic device in Henry Moodie's songwriting but a fundamental means of communicating emotional truth. This study is expected to contribute to the understanding of figurative language in song lyrics and to serve as a reference for students, researchers, and educators in the fields of linguistics and literary studies.
