Abstract

Learning speaking skills can improve students' ability to express their opinions logically through critical thinking. In addition, speaking skills can also shape students' character to be brave in expressing their opinions with confidence, as well as learning to respect the opinions of others. During the learning process, students are expected to be brave enough to express their opinions and ask questions in discussion forums. However, it is often found that students tend to feel shy and hesitant in expressing their opinions. Therefore, the researcher was interested in studying the application of the project-based learning model in Indonesian language learning of news text material for grade VII at SMPN 7 Bangkalan. This study used a descriptive qualitative research method with 29 seventh-grade students in class VII-B at SMPN 7 Bangkalan as the research subjects. The data collection techniques used in this study were: (1) observation; (2) interviews; and (3) performance tests. The results of this study show that there were 3 students who did not meet the qualifications. However, there were 26 students who met the qualifications. Thus, it can be concluded that the project-based learning model is effective in teaching Indonesian language news text material in class VII-B at SMPN 7 Bangkalan.

Abstract

This study explores students’ language attitudes toward Indonesian, regional languages, and English across diverse geographical regions in South Sulawesi. Language attitude plays a crucial role in shaping language use, identity, and learning outcomes, particularly in multilingual societies. This research aims to examine how geographical background influences students’ perceptions, preferences, and language practices within academic and social contexts. The study employed a qualitative descriptive research design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with fourteen third-semester students of the English Education Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar, originating from several regions, including Bone, Bulukumba, Sinjai, Jeneponto, Takalar, Gowa, and Pangkep. The data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis procedures involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that students demonstrate highly positive attitudes toward the Indonesian language, perceiving it as a unifying national language that facilitates communication across regions and functions effectively in formal and academic settings. Regional languages are strongly valued as symbols of cultural identity and heritage; however, their use is largely restricted to informal domains. English is regarded as an important global language with strong instrumental value for academic achievement and future careers. Despite this recognition, many students experience anxiety and lack confidence when speaking English, particularly in formal situations. Additionally, code-switching emerges as a common communicative strategy, reflecting students’ linguistic flexibility in navigating multilingual environments. Overall, the study concludes that students maintain a balanced multilingual attitude shaped by geographical background, social context, and communicative needs. These findings highlight the importance of inclusive language education policies that support national unity, cultural preservation, and global competence simultaneously.

Abstract

This study offers a novel approach by integrating oral literature narratology and speech act theory in analyzing syi'ir as a form of social communication in Pesantren. Unlike previous studies that generally focus on the function of da'wah or the religious content of syi'ir, this study systematically maps the relationship between narrative structure, language strategies, and the pragmatic effects produced in the context of performance. The transformation of the function of syi'ir is understood not only at the thematic level, but also at the level of narrative mechanisms and communicative processes that shape the meaning and social orientation of the congregation. This research was conducted in Pesantren in East Java with sources from the pesantren community. The data consists of syi'ir and interviews conducted with the Islamic pesantren community. The theoretical contribution of this research lies in strengthening the integrative narratological-pragmatic analysis model as a framework for reading the dynamics of oral literature in a changing social context. This approach broadens the perspective of Javanese oral literature studies by placing text, performance, and communicative relations as a single, interrelated unit of analysis.
