Abstract

This research departs from the problem of the rampant practice of corruption that is normalized in social and bureaucratic life, as well as the need for effective critical communication strategies in the digital space to build anti-corruption awareness. The purpose of this study is to describe the types and functions of directive speech, the role of social context, and the contribution of multimodal elements in corruption prevention posters. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a multimodal pragmatic approach. The research data is in the form of 23 posters of corruption prevention campaigns. Data analysis is carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawn, by combining pragmatic analysis to identify directive speech actions and multimodal analysis to interpret the interaction between text and visual elements. The results showed that the posters were divided into three main categories, namely rejecting bribes, rejecting gratuities, and rejecting illegal levies and extortion, all of which were dominated by directive speech with the functions of commanding, prohibiting, and giving warnings. Multimodal elements such as colors, symbols, gestures, character expressions, and visual layouts have been proven to strengthen speech illusion and build a stronger persuasive effect. The conclusion of this study shows that the multimodal pragmatic approach is able to comprehensively reveal how language, context, and visuals interact with each other in building critical, persuasive, and ideological anti-corruption communication strategies in digital public spaces.

Abstract

This study analyzes the intertextual relationship between Marchella F. P.’s Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini (NKCTHI) and Almira Bastari’s Home Sweet Loan (HSL), two contemporary Indonesian novels that highlight family dynamics, psychological wounds, and social pressures on younger generations. Using Julia Kristeva’s concept of intertextuality, the study positions NKCTHI as a hypogram that is thematically and contextually transformed in HSL. The analysis covers intrinsic elements (theme, characters, plot, point of view, style) and extrinsic elements (social, psychological, and cultural values). The findings reveal that although NKCTHI adopts a poetic-reflective style while HSL employs a light-satirical tone, both depict family as a site of conflict and emotional wounds. Intertextuality emerges in the portrayal of children’s alienation within their own homes and the socio-cultural expectations imposed on their roles in urban families. The study concludes that the two novels are interconnected not only in narrative and theme, but also in their function as literary reflections of intergenerational trauma and as mediums for readers to understand the importance of emotional reconciliation within families.

Abstract

This study aims to develop learning media based on Assemblr Edu to improve students’ speaking skills in negotiation texts. This research employs the ADDIE development model, which consists of five stages: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were collected through expert validation, observation, questionnaires, interviews, as well as pre-test and post-test. The results of expert validation indicate that the developed media is highly feasible for use, with an average score above 90% based on content, presentation, and functionality aspects. The effectiveness test results show an increase in students’ average scores from 60.25 in the pre-test to 89.17 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test analysis yields a significance value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that this media is effective in improving students’ learning outcomes. In addition, students’ responses show that the media is engaging, easy to use, and capable of enhancing motivation and confidence in the learning process. Therefore, Assemblr Edu-based learning media has been proven effective in supporting negotiation text speaking skills and has the potential to serve as an innovative reference in technology-based learning development.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Genre-Based Approach (GBA) in improving the academic writing skills of sixth-semester PGMI students at IAI Miftahul Ulum Tanjungpinang. The research employed a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest pattern, involving 32 students as participants. Data were collected through written tests (pretest and posttest), classroom observations, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Sign-Rank Test with the assistance of SPSS, while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. The results show a significant improvement in students’ academic writing scores after the implementation of GBA, with the average score increasing from 66.88 (pretest) to 81.34 (posttest). The Wilcoxon Sign-Rank Test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a statistically significant difference between students’ writing abilities before and after the intervention. Additionally, students demonstrated better understanding of academic text structure, increased motivation, and more frequent, use of valid references. However, some students still experienced difficulties in constructing logical arguments and initiating the writing process. These findings confirm that the Genre-Based Approach is effective in enhancing academic writing skills among PGMI students and can serve as a reference for developing writing instruction strategies in higher education

Abstract

This research departs from the need to understand speech acts in the realm of written language. The speech acts that become the focus of the research are illocution and their perlocutionary effects. The purpose of the research is to examine the forms of illocution and perlocutionary effects that appear in the novel Namaku Alam by Leila S. Chudori as well as to understand how speech acts are contained in the dialogue of the novel. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method with listening or reading and note-taking techniques as the technique of data collection. The data taken are focused on dialogues related to the impact of the 1965 tragedy experienced by the main character. The results of the analysis will be described in detail to illustrate the findings. The pragmatic approach becomes the basis of analysis, with the theory of illocution by Searle and Austin which includes assertive, directive, expressive, commissive and declarative illocution as well as the theory of perlocution by Kartika and Widodo, namely perlocution of positive response, negative response and nonresponse as references. The results of the research produce 28 data with details of 15 illocution data divided into five categories, namely 4 assertive data, 4 directive data, 4 expressive data, 1 commissive data, and 1 declarative data, as well as 15 perlocution data consisting of 4 positive response data, 9 negative response data, and 1 nonresponse data. The overall findings show that the novel functions not only as a literary work, but also as a medium that reflects the complexity of communicative interaction.

Abstract

Language that develops within coastal communities is the result of long-term interaction between humans and the marine environment. In fishermen’s lives, language functions not only as a means of communication, but also as a medium for storing ecological knowledge, shaping cultural identity, and transmitting social values. This study aims to analyze the role of language in the lives of Maluku fishermen, particularly in relation to the formation of coastal community identity, the function of language in fishing activities, and the existence of oral traditions as part of maritime cultural heritage. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature review and conceptual analysis of various forms of language use in traditional fisheries. The data consist of fishermen’s vocabulary, terms for naming marine spaces, and forms of oral traditions such as folklore, mantras, pantun, and maritime proverbs found in coastal communities. The results show that the language of Maluku fishermen has broad functions in coastal community life. It serves not only as a technical communication tool in fishing activities, but also as a marker of community identity and a medium for storing ecological knowledge related to marine conditions, fishing seasons, and traditional fishing strategies. In addition, language functions as a medium of cultural expression reflected in various forms of oral traditions passed down through generations. From an ecolinguistic perspective, the marine lexicon used by fishermen represents the reciprocal relationship between humans and the maritime environment. Therefore, documenting and preserving fishermen’s language is an important step in maintaining maritime cultural identity while sustaining local ecological knowledge that supports sustainable marine resource management.

Abstract

This article examines the intersection of erotic desire and religious devotion in Emha Ainun Nadjib’s BH, a contemporary Indonesian Islamic short story that challenges conventional theological boundaries. The narrative centres on two male characters. First is Niken, a feminised transgender figure, and second is Aku, a devout Muslim man, whose relationship embodies homoerotic intimacy intertwined with spiritual tension. Drawing on Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, the study explores how Islamic values and moral expectations shape expressions of queer desire. Using a qualitative descriptive method and close textual analysis, the research reveals that Niken openly enacts her gender identity through stylised feminine expression, signifying confidence and spiritual acceptance of her queer self. In contrast, Aku displays restrained masculinity and emotional detachment, illustrating an internal theological struggle between piety and same-sex longing. These contrasting performances expose the theological strain experienced by queer Muslim individuals in reconciling erotic devotion with religious conformity. The study argues that BH offers a literary space where Islamic belief and homoerotic intimacy collide, complicating the boundaries between sacred and profane. By examining such tensions in Islamic fiction, the article contributes to broader conversations on gender, sexuality, and spirituality in contemporary Indonesian literature.

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the psychological condition of characters and society in the short story "Harta Gaib" by Moh Hilmi Faiq through the analytical psychology approach of Carl Gustav Jung. The main focus of the research is to answer the question: How do the interactions between personas, shadows, and collective unconscious shape the behaviors, emotions, and inner conflicts of the characters and the village community? This short story describes the phenomenon of people who are tempted by supernatural treasures, to the point of being willing to commit extreme actions such as pawning rice fields and selling livestock for instant wealth. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with text analysis, identifying ego manifestations, personal unconscious, collective unconscious, as well as archetypes such as persona, shadow, anima, and self in character behavior and the collective dynamics of society. The results of the study show that Mr. Sobrak builds a manipulative persona to gain the trust of the public, while the collective shadow encourages irrational actions and greed. The collective unconscious arises through the symbolism of treasures and dreams, which affect social interactions as well as the inner conflicts of citizens. This short story not only tells the temptation of instant wealth, but also displays the psychological complexity and collective dynamics of society. This study offers a new perspective on short stories through the lens of Jung's analytical psychology, which was previously rarely used in the analysis of this work.
