Abstract

This research aims to reveal the psychological condition of the characters in the short story Behind the Iron Bars by Adinda Destiana Aisyah through the analytical psychology approach of Carl Gustav Jung. The main aspect examined in this study is to answer the question: What kind of processes do personal unconscious and shadow shape Alena's personality, extreme behavior, and inner conflict, and how does narrative symbolism reflect her psychological distress and traumatic experiences? The approach used in this study is qualitative descriptive with text analysis techniques, identifying manifestations of personal unawareness, shadow, collective unawareness, and archetypes such as persona, anima-animus, and self in character behavior. The results showed that Alena's persona built an image of being quiet and obedient, while shadows emerged through aggressive impulses and extreme actions as a result of a traumatic experience that was suppressed. The personal and collective unconscious is reflected through the symbolism of the prison room, the rain, and the interaction with other inmates, which reveal the tension between internal pressures and social norms. This short story not only depicts the trauma and inner conflict of individuals, but also shows the psychological complexity of the characters through shadow manifestations and hidden emotional dynamics. This study offers a new perspective in the analysis of contemporary Indonesian literature using Jung's psychoanalysis, particularly in the context of trauma and destructive behavior.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms, functions, and factors contributing to code-switching and code-mixing in the film Ambyar Mak Byar by Puguh P. S. Admaja. This study employs a sociolinguistic approach. The methodology used in this study is qualitative. Data collection was conducted by watching the film, transcribing the speech, identifying, and grouping the data based on the research objectives. Data analysis includes data collection, reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions (verification). The results of this study indicate that the use of code-switching and code-mixing in the film Ambyar Mak Byar follows a systematic pattern while reflecting the linguistic reality of a bilingual community. This study found that code-switching occurs predominantly in the form of inward code-switching. The function of code-switching is frequently observed as a means of showing respect to the interlocutor. The primary factors contributing to code-switching are found in the variety and register of speech. Meanwhile, code-mixing tends to appear in the form of mixed code-mixing. The function of code-mixing was frequently observed to emphasize the conversation. The factors causing code-mixing were largely found in the use of more popular terms. This study reveals that there is still a disregard for the rules of proper and correct Indonesian language usage in communication practices within a film, which is, after all, an educational medium.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Time Token Arends learning method on students’ ability to write drama scripts in the ninth grade of SMP Negeri 2 Sidikalang. The background of this research is the low ability of students in writing drama scripts, which can be seen from the difficulties experienced by students in developing ideas, arranging plot structures, and composing the elements of drama systematically. Therefore, an effective learning method is needed to encourage student participation and improve their ability in writing drama scripts. This research employed a quantitative approach with an experimental design. The subjects of the study were 62 ninth-grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Sidikalang who were divided into two groups, namely the experimental class and the control class. Data were collected through a writing test in the form of pre-test and post-test to measure students’ ability in writing drama scripts. The obtained data were analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test, and hypothesis testing with the t-test. The results of the study indicate that students’ ability in writing drama scripts before the implementation of the Time Token Arends method was relatively low, with an average score of 56.39. After the implementation of the method, the students’ ability improved significantly with an average score of 79.6. The hypothesis testing showed that the value of t-count (12.05338) was higher than t-table (1.67065) at a significance level of 5%. This finding indicates that the Time Token Arends method has a significant effect on improving students’ ability to write drama scripts. In conclusion, the implementation of the Time Token Arends learning method significantly improves students’ ability in writing drama scripts. The method encourages students to actively participate in the learning process, enabling them to develop ideas, construct dialogues, and understand the structure of drama scripts more effectively.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of differentiated learning on the short story writing skills of eleventh-grade students at Free Methodist High School, Medan, in the 2024/2025 academic year. This study used a quantitative approach with experimental methods. The research design used a two-group pretest-posttest control design involving two classes: an experimental class and a control class. The population in this study was all 109 eleventh-grade students at Free Methodist High School, Medan. The sample size was 70 students: 35 in grade XI MIPA (the experimental class) and 35 in grade XI IPS-2 (the control class). Data collection was conducted through short story writing tests, administered in the form of pretests and posttests using an assessment rubric covering the structure, characteristics, and elements of short stories. The results showed that the average pretest score in the experimental class was 62.31, increasing to 80.4 in the posttest after being treated with differentiated learning. Meanwhile, the average pretest score in the control class was 62.74, increasing to 73.37 in the posttest after using conventional learning. Data analysis showed that the experimental class' short story writing ability improved significantly compared to the control class. Based on the results of the hypothesis testing using a t-test, differentiated learning significantly influenced the short story writing ability of eleventh-grade students at SMA Free Methodist Medan. Therefore, differentiated learning can be used as an effective alternative learning model to improve students' short story writing ability.
