Abstract

The aims of this research was to find out the role of parents to children in learning English. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data of this research were questionnares . After analyzed the data, the result of this study are follows several theories associated with parents as the supporter and motivator. Based on the result of the research that has been conducted on “The Role of Parents to Children in learning English”,it can be conducted that the role of parents as a supporter and motivator is very important based on the data that has been collected,there are 100% of parents wants to participate in supporting and motivating their children in learning,especially learning English

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find out if there is a correlation between English listening habit and vocabulary mastery at SMA Katolik St. F.X. Kema. This is a quantitative research. This research was conducted at SMA Katolik St. F.X. Kema. A questionnaire with 15 items and vocabulary test 15 items adapted from previous related research was used and distributed to 15 students. The result of calculation was using Pearson product moment formula process by SPSS IBM Statistic Version 25 Program which showed the score of r table (-2,58<0. 606), It means that H0 was accepted and Ha was rejected. In conclusion, there is negative correlation meaning that English listening habit and vocabulary mastery at SMA Katolik St. F.X. Kema has no correlation.

Abstract

In this study, the writer analyzed the novel written by John Steinbeck, entitled The Grapes of Wrath. This novel tells about the struggle of the Joad family in fulfilling their needs in life. Therefore, the writer gave the title of this skripsi with “Life struggle as Reflected in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.” In this research, the writer used objective approach by Abrams. The writer of this study used Abrams' objective methodology. Because the data in this study are quotes from the novel The Grapes of Wrath and because there is no statistical analysis or consideration of numbers, it is categorized as descriptive qualitative approach. Firstly the result of this study shows the struggle for a place to live refer about Joad family migrates from their native land to another place to live better. Second, struggle to find work refers the Joad family hard struggle to survive and struggle to find work in their new place. Their expectation about California is really different in reality. The third, struggle to security, it is about how Joad family protects their member of family, Tom Joad, from the police because he has killed one of the police. Abstract

"Using Board Race Game to promote the students' vocabulary mastery at VIII grade kids of SMP Anugrah Tondano" was the topic of this study. This study sought to determine if the Board Race game improved pupils' vocabularies. This study was carried out using a quantitative approach. This study used an experimental pre-test and post-test design in one class. This study focused on the first grade at SMP Anugrah Tondano, which included 20 pupils. Each test consisted of 20 numbers, which were delivered to the pupils. According to the study's findings, the post-test's mean score (68) was higher than the pre-test's (38.25). Based on the findings, it was possible to draw the conclusion that utilizing a board race game to teach kids vocabulary was beneficial since it might motivate them to study and help them retain more words.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether memorization assignment can increase student reading comprehension or not. This study included 30 students from class X1 at SMA N 1 Tondano. This was a quantitative study that used a pre-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test design. Data from the pre-test and post-test were collected using a matching and essay test, both of which had 18 items, with the matching test having 10 numbers and the essay test having 8 numbers. The findings of this study revealed a significant difference in achievement between the pre-test and post-test. The highest pre-test score obtained by students is 60, and the highest post-test score obtained by students is 90. It can be concluded that the effect of giving memorization assignment can increase students reading comprehension. English teacher are advised to give the students memorization assignment at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano because it can increase students reading comprehension.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to reveal Lennie Small’s social interaction in the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. This study was classified as a qualitative research because the writer gathered the data in the form of words as well as quotation from the work itself to support the research.  The writer collected the data from two kinds of sources, namely primary source and secondary source. The primary source was taken from the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, and the secondary sources are the other material that supports the research such as books, articles, and websites. This study also used a sociological approach to explain the situation that occurred to Lennie Small immigrant worker and how his character development in that time as described in John Steinbeck novel Of Mice and Men. The result of this study showed that there are two kind of social interaction to reveal the main character Lennie Small; associative and dissociative.

Abstract

This research aims to find out a comparative score between multiple choice and cloze-test toward student’s reading comprehension achievement at SMK Negeri 1 Tombulu. This research used quantitative research with the type of comparative research that used the test method. The subject in this research were the first-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Tombulu. The data collection technique used two types of tests, first is multiple-choice objective consist of 20 number and second is cloze-test consist of 20 number. The writer used the IBM SPSS Statistics Program and the Independent Sample T-Test formula to analyse the data. The results showed that the average score of students' reading on the multiple choice test was 81.40 while the average score on the cloze-test was 58.00. This value indicates that the multiple choice obtains higher results than the cloze test. It is proved that the significance value of sig. (2-tailed) is <0.001 or has a value of 0.000. That is, sig. value (2-tailed) < 0.05. According to the independent sample t-test, it can be concluded that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that the multiple choice test is better to assess students' reading comprehension achievement in first-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Tombulu.

Abstract

This research focus on the use of Read, Cover, Remember, Retell (RCRR) in improving students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano. The research sample consisted of 31 students at class XI IPA 6. A quantitative research method was used, employing a Pre-Experimental Design form of one group pre-test and post-test design. The instrument used in this research was a multiple-choice test consisting of 25 items. Data were analyzed using mean score formula to see significant differences between the pre-test and post-test scores. The results showed that there was a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. The result of students’ pre-test was 41,48 and the post-test was 71,61. The different score between pre-test and post-test was 30,13. The result of this research is indicate that mean score of post-test was higher 30,13% more than pre-test. This shows that the use of the RCRR method is effective in improving students' reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano. In addition, students report that the RCRR helps them to focus more and understand the text better. In conclusion, this research recommends that the RCRR method be used as an alternative learning in teaching reading especially reading comprehension in schools.

Abstract

This study looks into the use of crossword puzzles to help pupils build their vocabulary. The research subject for this study was decided upon in class VII b at SMP Negeri 3 Tondano. There are 20 students in this class. The pre-experimental design of this study included pre- and post-tests for a single group. Scores from the pre- and post-tests following therapy were used to collect the data. The minimum and maximum scores in this investigation were 50 and 90, respectively. The results showed that the pre-test mean score was 63 and the post-test mean score was 78.5. It indicates that the post-test result is better than the pre-test. As a result, it can be said that teaching vocabulary using crossword puzzles differs significantly from other methods. Thus, it can be said that crossword puzzles can help pupils in SMP Negeri 3 Tondano's seventh grade increase their vocabulary. This demonstrates how crossword puzzles can be used by English teachers to expand their pupils' vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe struggle of black women in Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl, Woman, Other. There are three kinds of struggle that the researcher found such as black women’s struggle against racism, society’s prejudice, and gender oppression. Due to the fact that the data are presented in the form of words, this study is qualitative. Napikoski's feminist literary theory will be utilized for the data analysis. The novel itself served as the primary source for the data collection, and various books, journals, web pages, and other references were used as secondary sources to support the research. The novel's context and interpretation of the text serve as the foundation for the concept's analysis. The result of this study shows how black women struggling with racism, society’s prejudice and also gender oppression.
