Abstract

Background: Enteral formula is a liquid nutritional preparation administered orally or via tube to patients with a functioning digestive system, and high-energy high-protein (HEHP) diets are essential for patients requiring enhanced nutritional intake. Objective: To determine the optimal formulation of HEHP enteral formula based on purple sweet potato flour, tempeh flour, and chicken egg flour in terms of macronutrient composition, viscosity, microbiological quality, acceptability, and food cost. Methods: This experimental study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three formulations tested on 30 panelists for organoleptic evaluation. Results: The organoleptic test results (color, aroma, taste, and texture) indicated that Formula 1 (F1) was the most preferred. F1 contained 124.49 kcal energy, 6.75% protein, 7.25% fat, and 8.06% carbohydrates per 100 grams, with a viscosity of 34.0 mPa.s and a Total Plate Count of 1.0 × 10 colonies/ml, meeting the acceptable microbiological standards for enteral nutrition. Among all formulations, F1 demonstrated optimal sensory quality, nutritional balance, and production cost efficiency, making it the most suitable candidate for HEHP dietary use. Conclusion: The HEHP enteral formula made from purple sweet potato, tempeh, and chicken egg flour is a feasible and acceptable alternative for conscious patients requiring oral HEHP nutritional support.

Abstract

Background: Post-Mastectomy Pain Syndrome (PMPS) is a chronic neuropathic pain lasting over three months after mastectomy, often affecting the chest, axilla, or arm, yet data on its prevalence in Eastern Indonesia remain scarce. Objective: To describe the characteristics and impact of PMPS among post-mastectomy patients at Ibnu Sina Hospital. Methods: A descriptive observational study was conducted involving 30 post-mastectomy patients diagnosed with PMPS, using univariate analysis with SPSS 25.0 to assess pain characteristics and quality-of-life effects, with neuropathic pain defined as a score >/ 4 on the Neuropathic Pain Scale. Results: The majority of patients (76.7%) experienced chronic pain localized mainly to the anterior chest and axilla, often radiating to the upper arm. About 70.0% reported significant interference with daily activities, sleep disturbance, and psychological distress, while 60.0% experienced pain exacerbation during shoulder movement. Neuropathic characteristics such as burning and tingling sensations were frequently reported, with moderate to severe pain intensity noted in over half of the participants. These findings indicate that PMPS substantially compromises patients’ physical function and emotional well-being during postoperative recovery. Conclusion: PMPS prevalence is high and markedly affects quality of life, necessitating early screening and multidisciplinary pain management in post-mastectomy care.

Abstract

Background: The rising prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia from 10.9% in 2018 to 11.7% in 2023, positioning the country fifth globally with 19.47 million cases highlights an urgent public health concern requiring effective management strategies. Objective: To determine the effect of diabetes exercise on blood glucose levels (BGLs) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: This pre-experimental study used a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 18 respondents who performed diabetes exercise three times per week for four weeks, each session lasting 30 minutes. Results: Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, the Shapiro-Wilk test, and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Normality tests showed significance values of 0.521 (pre-test) and 0.946 (post-test), indicating normally distributed data. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.001 (<0.05) with a large effect size (0.68), demonstrating a significant reduction in BGLs after the intervention. Mean BGLs decreased substantially from pre- to post-exercise, suggesting improved glycemic control. These findings confirm that regular diabetes exercise enhances insulin sensitivity and promotes better glucose utilization through increased muscle activity. Conclusion: Diabetes exercise significantly reduces blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and should be recommended as a complementary, non-pharmacological therapy for optimal glycemic management.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a major public health concern among productive-age individuals, influenced not only by genetic factors but also by modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and stress. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between diet, physical activity, and stress levels with the incidence of hypertension among individuals in the productive age group. Methods: A quantitative research design with a Cross-Sectional approach was employed using purposive sampling involving 112 hypertensive respondents of productive age, and data were analyzed using the Spearman-Rho correlation test. Results: The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between dietary patterns and hypertension incidence (p = 0.001). More than half of the respondents engaged in light physical activity, and a positive correlation was observed between physical activity and hypertension (p = 0.001). Additionally, stress levels were significantly correlated with hypertension incidence (p = 0.001). These results indicate that poor dietary adherence, low physical activity, and high stress levels contribute to the increasing prevalence of hypertension among productive-age adults. Conclusion: Maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress effectively are crucial strategies to prevent hypertension and promote cardiovascular health in the productive age population.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a global health problem that affects quality of life, morbidity, and mortality, with low self-efficacy and poor medication adherence being major barriers to effective management. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between self-efficacy, medication adherence, and quality of life among hypertensive patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Kartasura Health Center from June to November 2024 involving 128 purposively selected respondents. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using statistical tests to determine variable relationships. Results: Most respondents demonstrated low self-efficacy, poor medication adherence, and low quality of life; the majority were females aged 56–65 years with junior high school education. Statistical analysis revealed a significant relationship between self-efficacy and treatment adherence (p < 0.001), as well as between self-efficacy and quality of life (p = 0.002). Furthermore, patients with higher self-efficacy scores exhibited 1.8 times greater adherence and 1.6 times higher quality of life scores compared to those with lower self-efficacy. Conclusion: Self-efficacy plays a pivotal role in enhancing medication adherence and quality of life among hypertensive patients; thus, interventions aimed at strengthening self-efficacy should be prioritized in hypertension management programs.

Abstract

Background: Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a persistent middle ear infection that significantly contributes to global hearing loss and reduced quality of life, yet recent epidemiological data from major Indonesian cities such as Makassar remain scarce. Objective: To identify risk factor characteristics, including age, gender, and CSOM type (benign or malignant), among patients diagnosed at Ibnu Sina Hospital, Makassar, from 2022 to 2023. Methods: A quantitative descriptive study with a retrospective design was conducted using total sampling of 31 patient medical records meeting inclusion criteria, and data were analyzed univariately to present frequency distributions and percentages. Results: The 17–25-year age group had the highest CSOM prevalence (35.48%), followed by the 0–5-year group (16.13%). Female patients accounted for 51.61%, showing a nearly equal gender distribution. The majority of cases were benign CSOM (96.77%), with only 3.23% classified as malignant. These findings indicate that young adults represent the most affected demographic, likely due to environmental exposure and untreated upper respiratory infections, while malignant CSOM remains rare. Conclusion: Age is the primary risk factor for CSOM in this population, with young adults being the most vulnerable, underscoring the importance of targeted preventive measures and early ear health education.

Abstract

Background: Smoking is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes mellitus, and fishermen may have specific smoking habits that influence blood glucose levels. Objective: To analyze the relationship between smoking activity and random blood glucose levels among active fishermen in Banggae Sub-District, Majene District. Methods: This quantitative analytical study with a cross-sectional design involved 100 active fishermen selected using the Slovin formula, with data analyzed using Spearman correlation in SPSS. Results: Most respondents were young (45%) and middle-aged adults (46%), and 94% smoked filter cigarettes. A significant positive correlation was found between smoking activity and random blood glucose levels (r = 0.295, p = 0.003), indicating that higher smoking frequency and dependency were associated with elevated glucose levels. Conversely, no significant relationship was observed between dietary patterns and glucose levels (r = -0.081, p = 0.422). These findings suggest that smoking intensity, rather than food type, plays a more dominant role in glucose dysregulation among fishermen. Conclusion: Increased smoking activity is significantly correlated with higher random blood glucose levels, emphasizing the urgent need for smoking cessation interventions to reduce diabetes risk in this high-risk occupational group.

Abstract

Background: Soil-Transmitted Helminths (STH) infection remains a major public health concern among Indonesian school-aged children, largely influenced by personal hygiene behaviors. Objective: To analyze the relationship between personal hygiene practices and STH infection among elementary school children in the Karuwisi Health Centre area, Makassar. Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study involved 50 children, using the Kato-Katz method for stool examination and a structured questionnaire to assess hygiene behaviors; data were analyzed using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests. Results: The prevalence of STH infection was 24% (12/50), with all cases identified as Ascaris lumbricoides of light intensity. Poor handwashing behavior showed a strong association with STH infection (p < 0.001), and inadequate nail hygiene was also significantly related (p = 0.016). Conversely, the habit of not wearing footwear was not significantly associated with infection (p = 0.325). The findings indicate that transmission occurred primarily via the fecal-oral route rather than skin penetration. These results highlight that improving handwashing and nail hygiene behaviors can substantially reduce infection risk. Conclusion: Handwashing and nail cleanliness are key behavioral determinants of STH infection, emphasizing the need for school-based health education focusing on these preventive practices to mitigate STH transmission among children.
