Abstract

Social media has evolved into a means of self-actualization that has become a way to give and attract the attention of its users. Social media has become an open showcase for displaying personal spaces. To a certain extent, personal appearances on social media are no longer limited to displaying but also showing off with the aim of gaining attention, praise, and recognition, or what is popularly known as flexing. This paper focuses on exploring the negative and positive aspects of flexing culture in social media and the guidance on showing off in the Quran. The researcher will examine the relevance of flexing to QS. Aḍ-Ḍuha (94): 11 and analyze it using the double movement approach introduced by Fazlur Rahman. The result of the analysis is that in the Quran, showing off is only permissible for the purpose of expressing gratitude for Allah's blessings (tahadduts bi al-ni`mah) as in QS. al-Dhuha (94): 11. Any other purpose is considered behavior that is disliked by Allah, as exemplified in QS Luqman 31:18 and al-Hadid 57:20.

Abstract

As a mitsaqan ghaliza, the marriage bond is based on a strong commitment, guarded with sincerity and should not be neglected or separated easily. In principle, Islam allows divorce as a halal solution that Allah hates as well as an emergency exit to end an unhealthy marriage when all other efforts have failed. However, based on a hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, it seems that divorce can be done easily through the khulu' route. This paper aims to analyze the hadith narrated by Ibn 'Abbas, about the wife of Tsabit bin Qais who requested khulu' from her husband with a ransom. This research uses the takhrîj method with the approach of textual interpretation, contextual and intertextual interpretation. By exploring the sanad and matn, this study concludes that the hadith belongs to the group of ahâd traditions, is authentic and can be used evidence (hujjah). In the perspective of maqâshid al-syârî'ah, the essence of khulu' in the Hadith of Ibn Abbas is a form of Islamic protection of women's rights as a vulnerable group in the household institution which contains the values of hifz aql (protection of the benefit of the intellect) and the values of hifz nafs (protection of the benefit of the soul).  As an emergency exit, khulu' is a balanced solution for women who face household chaos to avoid harm.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of majāz mursal in QS. al-‘Ankabūt [29]: 41 as a rhetorical strategy in the construction of Qur’anic meaning. The verse presents a parable comparing those who associate partners with Allah to a spider building its house, where the spider’s web symbolically represents a fragile and unreliable system of dependence. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach with rhetorical and semantic analysis, this research explores the form of majāz  mursal maḥalliyyah in the verse's linguistic structure and the symbolic function of the spider’s house in conveying theological critique of polytheism. The primary data, drawn from the Qur’anic text, is analyzed using classical balaghah theory and contemporary Qur’anic rhetorical frameworks. The findings reveal that majāz  mursal in this verse not only enhances linguistic aesthetics but also serves as a central instrument in communicating implicit existential and spiritual messages. The metaphor of the spider’s house effectively evokes the reader’s awareness of the frailty of all forms of reliance other than on Allah. This study affirms that figurative language in the Qur’an operates as a powerful vehicle of divine communication rather than merely a literary embellishment.

Abstract

This article critically examines the authority of Ḥusayn al-Dhahabī in framing tafsīr ishārī through his work al-Tafsīr wa al-Mufassirūn. The study finds that al-Dhahabī’s critical stance toward tafsīr ishārī is not entirely grounded in an adequate conceptual understanding, as evidenced by his own admission regarding his limited familiarity with Sufi terminology and epistemology. This limitation has implications for the objectivity of Qur’anic exegetical historiography, particularly in its representation of the Sufi exegetical tradition. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach through historiographical analysis and epistemological critique of the text, this article argues for the necessity of rereading al-Dhahabī’s work within a more open and contextual methodological framework, so that tafsīr ishārī is not reduced merely to a deviation from the literal meaning of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This study examines the importance of using ‘illat as a methodological instrument in interpreting Qur’anic verses, particularly in responding to contemporary social dynamics. Through a qualitative approach and literature review of classical and contemporary exegetical methods, the study finds that Muslim scholars have developed approaches such as mafhum muwāfaqah, dalālat al-naṣṣ, and qiyās as means to extend the scope of legal rulings to new cases that share the same ‘illat. A case study of QS. al-Anfāl: 60 demonstrates that the verse is not confined to the historical context of past weaponry, but rather embodies a strategic spirit that remains relevant in the present, including in the form of modern weapons and cyber defense systems. This indicates that Islamic law is dynamic and capable of adapting to changing times, provided that the interpretive process carefully considers the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah and the principle of ‘illat. The study affirms that ‘illat functions not merely as a legal device, but also as an epistemological principle in constructing interpretations that are relevant and applicable.

Abstract

The linguistic study of the Qur'an does not only focus on philological or interpretive aspects, but can also be analyzed using the perspective of modern linguistics, one of which is the synchronic-diachronic approach. This article attempts to examine the word Taufiq in the Qur'an using both approaches. The synchronic approach is used to analyze the meaning of taufiq, while the diachronic approach is used to determine the development of the meaning of the word taufiq from pre-Islamic Arabic. Synchronically, the word taufiq is explicitly found in Qs. Hud (11): 88. This is understood as Prophet Shu'aib's acknowledgment that all success, guidance, and ability to follow the path of righteousness come entirely from Allah SWT. This confirms the meaning of taufiq as help from Allah SWT that bridges the will of humans with the will of Allah SWT. Meanwhile, diachronic studies show an interesting dynamic of meaning. In pre-Islamic Arabic, the word refers to conformity, agreement, and success in accordance with certain conditions. However, in the Qur'an, this meaning underwent a shift to become a form of assistance from Allah SWT. Thus, the results of this study show that synchronic analysis clarifies the contextual meaning of taufiq in the Qur'an, while diachronic analysis reveals the dynamics of meaning that developed from pre-Islamic times. This study contributes to the semantic understanding of the Qur'an and opens up space for reflection.

Abstract

Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam, one of Indonesia's unique provinces with a 97.26% Muslim population, is governed by the Qanun legal system. The Indonesian province with the highest proportion of Muslims is Aceh. Since the primary goal of the Maqasid Al-Quran is to purify the teachings in the Book of Allah as a guide for living in this world and for continuing to be happy in the hereafter in accordance with the teachings that form the basis of the Al-Quran, this is the reason why the contents of the Qanun Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam primarily implement it. If it is possible for the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam qanun to become a legal basis in general, the legal framework in the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia requires quite serious consideration because, first; Indonesia's religious and cultural diversity, second; principles of a secular and democratic state, third; human rights and individual freedoms, fourth; the need for national unity and harmony, fifth; experiences of other countries with sharia law. it cannot be denied that there will be positive things if this is implemented, including; increasing awareness of law and morality, reducing crime and criminality, encouraging better religious life, respecting Islamic cultural and religious identity, and increasing justice and equality.

Abstract

This study examines the function of the Earth’s rotation that results in the alternation of day and night from the perspective of the Qur’an using a thematic interpretative approach. Employing a descriptive qualitative method based on library research, this study relies on Qur’anic verses and Tafsir al-Misbah as primary sources, supported by scientific and astronomical literature. The findings reveal that the phenomenon of day and night in the Qur’an is not merely presented as a natural occurrence, but is understood as encompassing three interrelated functions: spiritual, theological, and pragmatic. These functions collectively reflect the Qur’anic invitation for human beings to contemplate the order of the universe as a manifestation of divine signs, thereby cultivating spiritual awareness and intellectual discernment characteristic of ulil albab.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the emergence of diverse understandings and practices of hijab among contemporary Muslim communities, particularly regarding the meanings of hijab, jilbab, and khimār, which are often understood as obligations tied to specific forms of dress. The study aims to analyze the meanings of the Qur’anic verses on hijab (QS. al-Ahzab 33:53, QS. al-Ahzab 33:59, and QS. an-Nur 24:31) using Abdullah Saeed’s contextual interpretation approach in order to formulate an understanding of hijab that is relevant and applicable in the present context. The research employs a qualitative method based on library research. The findings indicate that the Qur’anic injunctions concerning hijab are instructional in nature and closely bound to the socio-historical context of the seventh century, rather than prescribing a fixed or uniform model of clothing. QS. al-Ahzab 33:53 emphasizes the ethics of maintaining privacy, QS. al-Ahzab 33:59 highlights the social function of the jilbab as a means of protection and identity, while QS. an-Nur 24:31 focuses on modesty and the safeguarding of modesty (ʿawrah). Universally, hijab embodies values of modesty, dignity, protection, and identity, while its physical forms may adapt to cultural contexts and historical developments, provided that the fundamental principles of Islamic law particularly propriety and the protection of women’s dignity are upheld.

Abstract

The understanding of asbāb al-nuzūl is now seen not only as an explanatory device for the descent of the verse, but also as a critical instrument for reconstructing the chronological landscape of revelation. In modern development, the issue of the chronology of revelation no longer focuses only on the Makkiyyah–Madaniyyah division, but also includes historical, philological, and socio-political criticism at the time of revelation, as seen in contemporary studies of the last five years. The method of this research is qualitative, based on literature studies that are descriptive-analytical. The results of the study show that asbāb al-nuzūl not only serves as an explanation for the descent of verses, but is also an important instrument in mapping the phases of revelation, identifying the socio-historical context of the verses, and preventing distortions of interpretation. The integration between authentic narration of the companions, the narration of mursal verified through qara'in, criticism of sanad and matan, and modern contextual analysis allows for a more accurate and coherent reconstruction of the chronology of revelation. This study confirms that asbāb al-nuzūl has methodological significance in the development of historical and thematic interpretations, as well as being relevant as a multidisciplinary framework in contemporary Qur'an studies. These findings are expected to contribute to the formulation of a more critical, integrative, and interpretive approach in accordance with the development of modern methodologies.
