Abstract

This study examines the concept of ‘imārat al-masājid (the prosperity and development of mosques) in the Qur’an from the perspective of Abu Yahya Marwan bin Musa through his exegesis Hidāyatul Insān bi Tafsīr al-Qur’an. The focus of the study is directed toward the analysis of key verses, namely Q.S. At-Taubah: 18, Al-Baqarah: 114, and Al-Jinn: 18, which are then elaborated with the views of authoritative exegetes such as Ibn Kathir, Al-Maraghi, and Quraish Shihab. The method applied is thematic interpretation (tafsīr maudhū‘ī) with a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings reveal that the concept of mosque prosperity encompasses spiritual, social, educational, economic, and political dimensions. The mosque is not merely a place of worship but also serves as a center of community, education, social justice, social advocacy, and reconciliation. Marwan bin Musa’s interpretation emphasizes that mosque prosperity is a reflection of true faith, measured through devotion to prayer, zakat, and sincere worship of Allah. The novelty of this research lies in its systematic effort to uncover the thematic dimension of Marwan bin Musa’s exegesis on mosques, which has rarely been examined academically. This study discovers a new aspect in his interpretation that has not been significantly highlighted by other exegetes, namely the emphasis on the mosque as a transformative institution that actively contributes to empowering the Muslim community in both spiritual and social spheres. This finding aligns with contemporary realities that demand the mosque to function as a dynamic, inclusive, and relevant institution for modern Islamic civilization. Therefore, mosque prosperity should be understood as a collective responsibility grounded in monotheism (tawhid) and social ethics for the benefit of the ummah.

Abstract

The interpretation of anthropomorphic verses in the Qur'an, such as "the hand of God" or "the face of God," has generated significant theological debate in the history of Islamic thought. This article aims to analyze Muhammad Ali Ash-Shabuni's approach in interpreting these verses in Safwah at-Tafasir. Using a qualitative method based on literature study and a thematic-comparative approach, this study finds that Ash-Shabuni combines various views of classical mufasirs to build a theological position that maintains the principle of God's transcendence (tanzih) within the framework of the Ahlussunnah wal Jama'ah creed. He interprets the verses of anthropomorphism symbolically or through the submission of meaning to God (tafwidh), without assigning a literal meaning that likens God to creatures. The interpretation of "Allah's hand" is understood as a symbol of His power and defense; "Allah's face" is interpreted as His eternal Essence; while in the context of the Qibla direction, Allah's face is interpreted as His pleasure. This study emphasizes Ash-Shabuni's contribution in bridging between the legacy of classical tafsir and the needs of contemporary readers through a systematic approach in understanding the verses of the nature of God.

Abstract

The low quality of Qur’anic recitation among students remains a persistent challenge despite increasing memorization achievement. This study addresses the question: to what extent is the Maisura method effective in improving the tahsin tartil skills of students at Rumah Tahfidz Ibadurrahman, Jambi? Employing a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation of the tahsin program. The findings reveal a significant improvement across four key indicators: makhraj (52% to 80%), tajwid (48% to 76%), tempo (60% to 82%), and tartil (55% to 78%). The implementation of Maisura through talaqqi musyafahah, repetitive drills, and the use of murottal audio proved effective in producing more accurate and rhythmic recitation. Despite challenges such as a high teacher–student ratio and limited digital facilities, this study highlights Maisura as a strategic method for strengthening Qur’anic recitation quality. Beyond its empirical contribution, the research enriches the academic discourse on Qur’anic pedagogy while offering practical recommendations for the management of modern tahfidz institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Interpretations of ibil in surah al-Ghasyiyah verse 17 generally been literal, focusing primarily on biological and ecological aspects. However, from a semiotic perspective, the term holds deeper symbolic meanings. This study aims to explore the meaning of ibil through the semiotic framework of Charles Sanders Peirce by examining the triadic relationship between sign, object, and interpretant. The method used is a library research approach with qualitative descriptive analysis. The findings reveal that ibil functions as a Representamen that refers to the Object surah Al-Ghashiyah verse 17 resulting in three levels of Interpretant: first, ibil is interpreted as a camel in its physical form; second, as a symbol of a large, hump-backed creature; and third, as a symbol of human awareness of Godˈs greatness and power in creating extraordinary beings. These findings demonstrate that a semiotic approach can uncover symbolic meanings within the al-Qurˈan and open up broader and deeper interpretive possibilities regarding the divine messages embedded in the text.

Abstract

This study examines the ethical and theological dimensions of organ transplantation from a Qur’anic perspective using a thematic (mawḍū‘ī) tafsir approach combined with a normative–theological framework. As a modern medical intervention, transplantation raises questions about the sanctity of the human body, the duty to preserve life, justice, and the prevention of exploitation. By thematically analyzing six key verses, QS al-Mā’idah [5]:2, 32; al-Isrā’ [17]:70; al-Baqarah [2]:195, 286; and an-Naḥl [16]:97, this research integrates classical and modern tafsir (Ibn Kathīr, al-Jalālayn, al-Marāghī, al-Munīr/Wahbah al-Zuḥailī) with Tafsir Al-Qur’an Tematik (Lajnah Pentashihan Mushaf Al-Qur’an) as a representative of contemporary thematic exegesis, alongside current medical literature and real-world testimonies to construct an Islamic ethical framework for transplantation. The findings show that the Qur’anic principles of ḥifẓ al-nafs (preservation of life), ta‘āwun (collaboration in goodness), karāmah (human dignity), ‘adālah (justice), and ḥayāt ṭayyibah (a good life) provide robust theological support for organ donation and transplantation, provided ethical safeguards are met, namely voluntary, informed consent; fairness and transparency; and strict prohibition of commercialization and exploitation. Patient and family testimonies further demonstrate the urgent clinical necessity and human impact of transplantation. The study concludes that, when aligned with Qur’anic ethics and implemented through just clinical governance, organ transplantation is not only permissible but constitutes a noble contribution to social welfare and illustrates the dynamic applicability of Islamic teachings to contemporary biomedical challenges.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively examine the interpretation of lafaz bi 'abdihi in QS. al-Isra' [17]:1 through cross-tafsir analysis, namely al-Munir, Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Adzhim by Ibn Katsir, and al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab. The focus of this research is to uncover the meaning of ubudiyyah as the core of the spirituality of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as well as its relevance for the lives of contemporary Muslims. The method used is qualitative research with descriptive-analytical, comparative, and semantic approaches, while the data collection technique is done through library research on tafsir texts and supporting literature. The results showed that the three mufasirs have similarities in emphasizing that the glory of the Prophet lies in the identity of servanthood, not merely apostolic status. However, each tafsir has a different style: al-Munir emphasizes the fiqh-theological dimension, Ibn Katsir focuses on history, while al-Mishbah emphasizes spiritual context and social relevance. The synthesis of the three emphasizes that bi 'abdihi contains universal messages of humility, spiritual value-based leadership, and resistance to the challenges of modernity such as materialism and individualism. This research contributes to the strengthening of comparative tafsir studies while opening space for the integration of classical and contemporary tafsir with the needs of modern Muslims. The theoretical implications enrich the paradigm of ubudiyyah-based tafsir, while the practical implications are relevant for character education, social ethics, and Islamic leadership. Further research is suggested to link the study of tafsir with an interdisciplinary approach in order to expand the scientific horizon.

Abstract

Tafsir Jami' al-Bayan by Ibn Jarir at-Thabari is one of the monumental works in the treasures of classical tafsir which is widely used as a reference by the mufassir afterwards. In it, at-Thabari collected various narrations from the companions, tabi'in, and early generation scholars, including those classified as Israiliyyat. This study aims to examine the form, source, and method of at-Thabari in addressing Israiliyyat in his tafsir, as well as its impact on the understanding of certain verses. Through a qualitative approach with the content analysis method, it is found that at-Thabari includes Israiliyyat in three forms: history that supports the interpretation, history as a complement to the story, and history that is rejected or criticized. Although at-Thabari does not explicitly reject all Israiliyyat, he often mentions sanads, compares several versions of the narrations, and shows a critical attitude towards narrations that are not in accordance with Islamic principles. This study concludes that the presence of Israiliyyat in at-Thabari's tafsir needs to be critically examined by contemporary readers, especially in distinguishing between scientifically acceptable narrations and those that come from unauthentic traditions outside Islam.

Abstract

This research examines the phenomenon of marriage at a young age in Indonesia by emphasizing the minimum age for marriage and the notion of maturity according to the view of the Qur'an through the analysis of QS. The background of the research comes from the social, legal, and cultural developments that underlie the practice of early marriage, as well as policy changes through Law Number 16 of 2019 which equalizes the age of marriage for men and women to 19 years. The method used in this research is qualitative with a library research approach and thematic tafsir analysis (al-maudu'i). The research findings show that maturity (rusyd) in the Qur'an is not only seen from a biological point of view (baligh), but also includes psychological, intellectual, social, and moral dimensions, as well as financial obligations and conditions. Therefore, this research provides a new perspective on marriage that is not only legal formal, but also prioritizes mental, emotional, and spiritual readiness. Hopefully, this can be an alternative solution to prevent early marriage while strengthening the development of a harmonious, loving and happy family in this modern era.

Abstract

This article examines the meaning of the word fasād in the Qur'an and its relation to environmental damage. The purpose of this study is to explain how the concept of fasād can be used to understand human behavior that causes damage to nature, as explained in Surah Ar-Rūm verse 41. The results of the study show that fasād encompasses all forms of actions that cause imbalance and damage to the earth, whether physically, morally, or socially. The Qur'an emphasizes that humans should not destroy the earth after Allah has repaired it, because environmental damage arises from human greed and negligence in carrying out their duties as caliphs. Therefore, the values in the Qur'an can be used as a moral and spiritual foundation for protecting and preserving the environment in a sustainable manner.
