Abstract

This article examines a number of prophetic traditions (hadiths) that are commonly categorized as misogynistic, namely those perceived as degrading women or reflecting gender bias. Through an analytical–critical approach combined with contextual and historical interpretation, this study demonstrates that misogynistic understandings do not originate from Islamic teachings, but rather from patriarchal cultural constructions, mythologies of female creation found in Judeo–Christian traditions, and religious interpretations that overlook the moral and social contexts of the hadiths. The analysis explores several key narrations, including the command for wives to obey their husbands, the creation of women from a rib, women as the majority inhabitants of Hell, and the issue of female leadership. Findings indicate that these hadiths contain ethical messages, relational values, and principles of mutual responsibility rather than serving as instruments of discrimination. Reception analysis further reveals that literal readings detached from context often give rise to gender bias. In essence, Islam elevates the dignity of women, granting them access to education, social participation, and self-actualization. This article emphasizes the importance of interpreting hadith comprehensively—integrating historical analysis, maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, and gender hermeneutics—so that Islamic teachings on justice, equality, and human dignity can be understood proportionally.

Abstract

Contemporary religious practices in Indonesia reveal that the prophetic prohibition against crying over the deceased is frequently interpreted in a strictly literal manner. Such an interpretation often restricts grieving families from expressing natural emotional responses, thereby generating psychological strain. This situation underscores an academic problem: a persistent disjunction between the textual formulation of the hadith and its practical reception within Muslim communities. This study therefore investigates two central questions: first, how Ibn Ḥajar al-‘Asqalānī conceptualizes the meaning of the relevant hadiths; and second, how his explanation may inform or correct literalist tendencies in present-day Indonesian Muslim society. Employing a qualitative library research method, this study examines the pertinent narrations in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī alongside Ibn Ḥajar’s exegetical analysis in Fatḥ al-Bārī. The data were analyzed through systematic classification, interpretive reading, and thematic synthesis. The findings demonstrate that Ibn Ḥajar draws a clear distinction between natural, permissible expressions of grief and niyāhah, an exaggerated lamentation that implies objection to divine decree. He further asserts that the deceased is not punished for others’ crying unless such actions were previously sanctioned by the deceased. The study concludes that Ibn Ḥajar’s interpretive framework offers a balanced and context-sensitive understanding that can help recalibrate contemporary Muslim attitudes toward mourning practices. This highlights the importance of contextual hermeneutics in hadith interpretation.

Abstract

This study traces the development of the meaning of the term mawlā from the pre-Qur'anic to the post-Qur'anic period, focusing on the diversity of meanings that appear in the texts of the Qur'an. As a key term in the Qur'an, mawlā has a broad range of meanings, from the vertical relationship between humans and God to the horizontal relationship between humans. This study aims to examine the dynamics of these meanings through an analysis of a number of Qur'anic verses, including Al-Taḥrīm (66:2), Al-Ḥajj (22:13), and others. Using a qualitative approach and descriptive-analytical methods, this study utilizes Ferdinand de Saussure's synchronic and diachronic theories as a semantic analysis framework. Secondary data comes from various classical to modern interpretations, Arabic dictionaries, and pre-Islamic literary works. The results show that the meaning of mawlā is contextual, functional, and not static. Synchronically, this term refers to various roles such as helper, protector, or regulator in the context of vertical and horizontal relationships. Diachronically, there has been a shift in meaning from the terms patronage and slavery in the Jahiliyyah period to spiritual and egalitarian concepts in Islam, to becoming a religious title in the post-Qur'anic tradition. These findings confirm that the meaning of mawlā is differential, depending on the system and context, rather than having a fixed or singular meaning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the metaphorical meaning of al-libas in QS. al-Baqarah verse 187 and integrate it with the concept of emotional intelligencein the context of husband-wife relationships. This study uses aqualitative approach based on library research withthematic interpretation methods and an interdisciplinary approach between Al-Qur'aninterpretation and modern psychology. The primary data sources are from the Qur'an and classical and contemporary tafsir books, while the secondary data are in the form of psychology literatureand studies on family relationships. The results showthat al-libas has a symbolic meaning that includes protection, tranquility, and beauty in husband-wife relationships. These valuesare consistent with the main components of emotional intelligence according to Goleman, namely self-awareness, self-regulation, and empathy. The integration of the twogives rise to a “Qur'anic-emotional relationship” paradigm that emphasizes the balancebetween spiritual maturity and emotional maturity in the household. The implications of this study indicate that understanding the meaning of al-libascan serve as a conceptual and practical basis for fostering a harmonious Islamic family, while enriching the wealth of contextual and applicative interpretations inaddressing modern human relationship problems.

Abstract

This article examines the conceptual and functional relationship between the Qur’an, qiraat, and tajwid as three integral entities in Qur’anic studies. The Qur’an is understood as the speech of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad, transmitted through mutawatir narration, and serving as the primary guidance for Muslims. Qiraat represent authentic variants of Qur’anic recitation with continuous chains of transmission back to the Prophet, affirming a plurality of readings within the framework of divine revelation. Tajwid, meanwhile, is positioned as the discipline that preserves the beauty, accuracy, and authenticity of recitation through phonetic rules directly inherited from the Prophet by oral transmission. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach based on library research, this study concludes that conceptually, the Qur’an constitutes the divine text, qiraat represent the transmission variants, and tajwid is the science of pronunciation. Functionally, the Qur’an is the object of recitation, qiraat safeguard its mutawatir diversity, and tajwid ensures phonetic precision and aesthetic quality. This triadic relationship demonstrates the epistemological and functional continuity by which Allah preserves the purity of the Qur’an across generations.

Abstract

This article aims to examine Ali al-Shabuni views on the hijab and veil in QS. al-Nur [24]: 30-31. The results of al-Shabuni interpretation in the book Rawai' al-Bayan will be analyzed by the author to make them relevant in the current context. By using a qualitative-descriptive method, this article concludes that according to Ali al-Shabuni, the hijab and veil are obligatory based on the interpretation of QS. al-Nur [24]: 30-31. This refers to the current condition where many women actually open their genitals with the aim of being shown in the public sphere which has the potential to cause slander. While the scholars forbid opening the face, if it has the potential to cause slander and can foster lust for other men who are not mahram. Therefore, the use of the hijab and veil is very relevant in the contemporary context, even though there are many pros and cons that arise in society, because wearing the veil can have a positive impact on the women who wear it. Apart from that, the stigma attached to the veil which is synonymous with 'terrorists' does not affect this mandatory law, because in fact they are just rogues. The fact is that some are veiled but they are not terrorists. This article contributes to providing new insights that can serve as an ethical-theological basis for strengthening the identity of Muslim women in the modern era, and opens up space for understanding interpretations in the context of today's social reality.

Abstract

The waste crisis in the big cities reflects not only the technical and structural failures of waste management, but also the moral and spiritual deterioration of modern society. However, the study of ethical solutions based on the thoughts of contemporary Islamic figures, especially Fazlur Rahman, is still limited, showing that there is a research gap in integrating dynamic Qur'anic ethics with today's ecological problems. This study aims to analyze Rahman's thoughts on human moral responsibility towards nature and its relevance in dealing with the waste crisis. Using a qualitative approach through literature study, this study applies Rahman's double movement method to interpret the Qur'anic text historically and contextually. The findings show that the Qur'anic ethics formulated by Rahman views nature as a divine mandate that must be maintained, so that waste management is not only a technocratic obligation, but also a form of spiritual and social responsibility. These ethics can be the basis for forming collective ecological awareness, encouraging sustainable lifestyles, and inspiring environmentally just public policies. This study concludes that the resolution of the ecological crisis requires a transformation of moral consciousness, with religion as the source of value that guides humans to act justly towards all creation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the moral and social values contained in QS. Al-Hujurāt verses 11–13 through Imam al-Maraghi’s interpretation. The research addresses the issue of declining social ethics, conflicts, and the erosion of moral values in contemporary society. Using a qualitative descriptive-analytical approach and library research method, this study analyzes tafsīr texts, academic literature, and relevant prior studies. The findings reveal four key themes of social ethics: (1) respect for human dignity by prohibiting mockery, insults, and offensive nicknames; (2) preservation of social integrity through the avoidance of slander, prejudice, and fault-finding; (3) universal brotherhood based on human equality across nations and tribes; and (4) piety (taqwa) as the ultimate standard of human virtue. These findings reinforce the theoretical framework of adab ijtima‘i and Qur’anic moral education while highlighting their relevance to preventing social conflict, guiding ethical behavior in digital spaces, and strengthening character education in the era of globalization. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the importance of internalizing Qur’anic values as a moral foundation for modern society and suggests further research on their application in multicultural education and contemporary social practices.
