Abstract

Dental technicians cannot avoid being exposed to various physical, chemical, and biological agents due to their work environment. Therefore, technicians must control the work environment according to standard procedures to protect themselves from metal exposure in the workplace. Metal exposure can cause a decrease in the wild P53 gene. This study aims to determine the correlation between work environment control and wild P53 level among dental technicians. This was an analytic observational study with a cross sectional approach. There were 40 randomly selected samples. Data were derived through interviews and observation. Wild P53 was examined from saliva by indirect ELISA method. Data were analyzed using the Spearman correlation test with the significance value of p<0.05 (95% confidence level). The results showed that there was a significant correlation between work environment control and wild P53 level with a significance value of p<0.05. It was further obtained a Spearman's correlation value of 0.436. Such finding indicated a positive correlation value, meaning that the higher the score of work environment control performed by dental technicians while working on metal prostheses, the higher the P53wild level. It can be concluded that there was a significant correlation between work environment control and wild P53 level. The better and more correct the implementation of work environment control, the higher the wild P53 level. Future researchers are recommended to observe the effect of variables with other genotoxic markers on the effect of work environment controls among dental technicians.

Abstract

Caries in permanent first molars is the main cause of the high prevalence of extractions since the first molars are the first teeth to erupt. Such eruption is due to poor behavior in maintaining dental health as well as the anatomical shape of the first molars which have pits and fissures as the places for the food waste to stop. This study aims to determine the dental caries status of permanent first molars among children aged 8-9 years at SDN 35 of North Pontianak. This was a descriptive study with a survey method. The results of the study showed that the highest caries incidence rate of 20% was found in the first permanent molars, namely tooth 4.6. Caries incident was mostly found among female respondents by 69% and aged 9 years by 64%. It can be concluded that there were 65 healthy teeth with the highest number for tooth 1.6 by 48%. Furthermore, there were 119 dental caries with the highest number for tooth 4.6 by 78%. The rates of dental caries among female respondents and those aged 9 years were higher by 69% and 64%, respectively. Dental caries rate among respondents aged 9 years were larger, namely 64%. It is recommended to conduct further study regarding the level of understanding in maintaining dental health among children.

Abstract

Dental issues in children, impacting proper tooth growth, highlight parental responsibility for a child's oral health. Children depend on their parents for dental care, and unaddressed dental caries can lead to growth disturbances and increased stunting rates. The 2021 SSGI study shows a 37.8% stunting prevalence in East Nusa Tenggara, surpassing the national rate of 24.4%, with 15 districts in NTT exceeding 30%. In 2022, the national stunting rate decreased to 21.6%, but East Nusa Tenggara maintained a dominant 35.3% rate, with Kupang City and Kupang Regency exceeding the national average at 25.1% and 24.1%, respectively. This study aims to explore the relationship between maternal knowledge and attitudes concerning oral health and the occurrence of dental caries in children at risk of stunting at SDN Baumata Timur. Utilizing a cross-sectional approach, 62 students were examined, and their Body Mass Index (BMI-for-age) identified those experiencing malnutrition. Subsequently, students with malnutrition underwent dental examinations, and their mothers completed a questionnaire. Among the 62 students, 25 were identified as malnourished. Data analysis, employing correlation and multiple regression tests with a significance level of p < 0.05, indicates that maternal knowledge is not significantly related to dental caries in children, both in permanent (DMF-T) and deciduous teeth (def-t). Conversely, maternal attitudes significantly correlate with dental caries in children in both types of teeth. Multiple regression analysis reveals no significant relationship between maternal knowledge and attitudes regarding dental health and DMF-T in elementary school children (p > 0.05). However, a more significant relationship exists between maternal attitudes toward dental health and def-t in elementary school children (p=0.010<0.05). This highlights that maternal attitudes toward children's dental health influence their behavior, particularly regarding deciduous teeth. In conclusion, while no significant relationship exists between maternal knowledge and dental caries in children, a significant association is evident between maternal attitudes and dental caries in children with malnutrition at SDN Baumata Timur.

Abstract

School-age children are one of the vulnerable groups to oral health problems, such as dental caries and gum inflammation. These issues are often caused by children's lack of understanding of the importance of maintaining oral hygiene. Providing education using engaging media can be done as an effort to enhance children's understanding of daily oral health care. This study aims to determine the influence of the MEGI (Coloring and Brushing Teeth) health education media on dental and oral hygiene in elementary school students. This research is a quasi-experimental study with a one-group pre-post-test design. The research sample consists of second-grade elementary school students selected using total sampling techniques. Education is provided using the MEGI health education media. Data collection on dental and oral hygiene is recorded using the Plaque Free Score index. Research data is analyzed with Paired T-test. The results show that the mean dental and oral hygiene of students increased between before (14.25) and after (66.14) being given education using the MEGI health education media. The Paired T-test result obtained a p-value of 0.00 < α 0.05, indicating a significant influence of the MEGI health education media on dental and oral hygiene in elementary school students. The MEGI health education media can be used as one of the counseling media options to improve dental and oral hygiene in elementary school students. For future research, it is recommended to provide continuous education to children, and oral hygiene examinations should be conducted periodically.

Abstract

Learning media is expected to enhance students' interest in learning. This research aims to investigate the impact of instructional videos on the level of oral hygiene knowledge. The research methodology employed in this study is Quasi-Experimental, utilizing a quantitative design with pre-test and post-test approaches. Purposive sampling was employed as the sampling technique. The analysis, conducted using the Paired T-Test, yielded a ρ-value of 0.000 (ρ < 0.05), indicating a significant change in the mean knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention using oral hygiene instructional videos. One alternative approach to dental health education, particularly in tooth brushing, is through the use of videos. Using videos is more effective as it facilitates easier retention and understanding of lessons, transcending reliance on a single sensory input. It is anticipated that future research can develop applications related to accessing oral hygiene instructional videos.
