Abstract

This study had the purpose to report the analysis results of teacher manual book of “English for Nusantara” for grade VII. The research applied qualitative method with content analysis research design. This study was conducted in even semester of 2022/2023 academic year where the research herself as the instrument of the research. The data were collected from all five chapters in this book together with all three units of each of the chapter. This qualitative research applied conceptual research design. The analysis was carried out by referring to eight aspects junior high school teachers expected to be available in a teacher manual book as found by Fahmi, et.al., (2022) in their research. Those elements covered: layout, teaching procedures, materials explanation, teaching aids, assessment, time allotment, language example and answer key. The analysis results revealed that not all aspects provided in this book, hence, it was less effective to guide teacher in using this manual. However, as the implementation of “Merdeka curriculum’, this manual had already fulfilled what were mandated by the curriculum. This research suggests the authors of the any teacher manual textbook to develop the book based on the teachers’ expectations and needs in order to improve its benefits.

Abstract

The research seeks to explain the ideology claim of the chair depicted in the cover of Tempo magazine on March 25-31, 2024 edition. The research method employs qualitative analysis with Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach, including denotation description, connotation interpretation, and myth/ideology claims. Data collection for this study was conducted through literature observation techniques, focusing on two cover images from the March 25-31, 2024 edition of Tempo magazine. The research reveals that the ideology represented by the chair on the magazine cover reflects human avarice within the framework of power. This ideological perspective is derived from an in-depth analysis of the chair’s characteristics in relation to human desires. Keywords: Tempo Magazine Cover; Roland Barthes; Semiotics

Abstract

This study aims to unveil the charm behind the political campaign billboards for the 2024 Kendari Mayor candidate that use propaganda language through social semiotics analysis. The data used in this study are two billboards from candidates for Mayor in Kendari City in 2024 who have the highest electability survey results or candidates who are popular in the people of Kendari City. This study used a qualitative approach to analyze written text and visual text on billboards. The results showed that the two billboards analyzed had similarities in using propaganda language, such as logos, slogans, background colors, and the color of candidates' clothes. This research shows that the object of billboard participants is used to attract the attention of the audience and that the propaganda language in billboards moves through various elements such as logos, slogans, photo techniques, color composition, image arrangement, background color, and color of the candidate's clothing.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the meaning and function of expressions using emotes in the Mobile Legends game. The object of this research is the Mobile Legends game. The research data is in the form of emotes in the game and grouped using Pierce's semiotic approach (Representation, object and interpretant), then data analysis is carried out by describing the meaning of emotes in the Mobile Legends game. The results found that there are several functions of emote markers such as expression markers of praise, ridicule, surprise /surprised, recognizing greatness, and frustration increasing enthusiasm, 'being stupid/don't care. There are several communication systems in the Mobile Legend game including: 1) Chat column feature, 2) Quick chat feature, 3) Direct conversation feature. , and 4) Emotes. Of these four features, the emote feature is most widely used in communication when playing the Mobile Legends game. This emote feature is a form of communication that combines several elements, namely images, text, movement and sound. This certainly creates a more interesting playing atmosphere.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out how are the perception of students regarding to the use of role play technique in learning speaking skills and also what are strengths and weaknesses of it according to students’ perception at SMP Negeri 1 Kelapa Dua, Tangerang. The objectives of the research were to comprehend about how are the perception of students regarding to the use of role play technique in learning speaking skills and also to find out about what are strengths and weaknesses of using role play technique in learning speaking skills according to students’ perception. The research employed a case study method. The data were collected by observation, questionnaire, and interview. The results of the research showed that it helped them in English Vocabulary, English Grammar, English Comprehension, English Pronunciation, and also their English fluency. Moreover, it was more fun and helped them to cultivate their knowledge, made them interested and more enthusiastic, more optimistic, more motivated, taught them about teamwork, involved them directly, and more active. However, it still made them shy and afraid when playing roles. It is also proven to be efficient as a technique in learning speaking skills, but less effective in fostering their self-confidence.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the obstacles faced when presenting ESP procedure text through oral presentations in business and marketing majors and how to overcome those obstacles. This study used a case study design to understand the whole case in the totality of the environment. The subject of this study was an English teacher in a private Vocational High School (VHS) majoring in business and marketing in West Java, Indonesia. This study used two data collection techniques: observation and interview. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis. This study reported that there were several obstacles faced, such as the lack of students' readiness in presenting ESP procedure text through oral presentation (lack of confidence and lack of language mastery), lack of teacher's readiness in handling ESP teaching, and the mismatch between the given curriculum and the business and marketing students' need. Further, there were also several alternative solutions to overcome those obstacles, such as modifying the material and instructional model based on student's needs, using additional educational tools, and watching students' progress in preparing their oral presentations.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs of teachers at various educational levels, encompassing professional, pedagogical, and welfare aspects. Professional needs include competency development through training and further education, as well as support in the use of educational technology. Pedagogical aspects involve effective teaching methods, classroom management, and relevant evaluation strategies. This study employs a qualitative method with an interview design and open-ended questionnaires to collect data. The results reveal that teachers need several points in designing research using PowerPoint videos, including the need to determine appropriate topics for writing assessments, the need for writing genres that align with the task instructions, the need to understand learning materials, the need for preparation and presentation, specific element requirements, the need to provide teaching strategies, and the need to give feedback. This research offers a new contribution to the existing literature on the use of technology in classroom learning, with a particular focus on understanding teachers' needs in learning activities through PowerPoint videos. It provides insights and best practices relevant to current and future educational situations. The study highlights the importance of preparation for teachers in online learning using PowerPoint videos and provides support to English teachers who use PowerPoint videos as a learning medium.

Abstract

In the era of technology-based education, it is crucial to understand the effectiveness of interactive media in enhancing students' comprehension of specific text types. This study aims to examine the practice of interactive media to student learning outcomes at SMP IT Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar regarding Procedure texts. The subjects in this study are 20 students of IX B1 Class. This study used pre-experimental/one-shot case study research to compare learning outcomes. The data collection method is the academic performance outcomes of the students and field notes analyzed quantitatively. The findings showed significant differences in student understanding when receiving instruction with interactive multimedia then before. Students after taught using interactive multimedia show a higher level of understanding of the Procedural Text. Therefore, the use of interactive multimedia in the teaching of Procedure Texts is highly recommended as it significantly improves students' understanding and is well received by students. Although the integration of interactive multimedia in the classroom is increasing, there is still a gap in understanding its specific impact on student learning outcomes for Procedural Texts.
