Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between terms of address in Patani Malay and Jambi Malay in order to reveal similarities and differences as well as factors that influence the linguistic relationship between the two Malay languages. This is a qualitative study with a sociolinguistic approach. The focus of the study is the analysis of terms of address in Patani Malay (Yala) and Jambi Malay to examine their relationship and socio-cultural context. The research subjects are native speakers aged 40–70 years. Data collection for this study included: (1) participatory observation (natural interaction), (2) interviews (key informants), (3) document study (old manuscripts, dialect dictionaries), (4) instruments: semi-structured interview guide, observation sheet, written documents. The research sampling technique used purposive sampling (criteria: mastery of traditional greetings). Data were collected through literature study and participant observation, then analyzed based on vertical generation classification (upper [+3] to lower [-3]) and horizontal ([0]) as well as non-family contexts. Data analysis included data reduction, data presentation (comparative tables), triangulation of sources and experts, and interpretation (language migration theory and semantic change). Data validity included credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. The results of the study show that both languages have parallel kinship address structures, especially in respect for the older generation (e.g., datok for grandfather) and the core kinship system, which reflects Malay cultural values.

Abstract

The application of literary ecocriticism in analyzing folklore is important to develop. Folklore depicts greed, environmental destruction, and the loss of ecosystem balance caused by human actions. Genting and Gentas are works of local literature from East Kalimantan that show ecological imbalances in a country, such as drought, which have an impact on the lives of its people. This study aims to provide an overview of the environmental issues in the stories of Genting and Gentas, as well as to describe the environmental ethics principles contained therein. This study uses Lawrence Buell's literary ecocriticism approach and a literature study that focuses on reference materials. The results of the study show that the presence of ecological disasters in the form of long droughts is caused by human negligence in decision-making and extravagant habits that undermine the legitimacy of nature as the basis of life, represented by the community's violation of environmental ethics principles. This research can be used as local teaching material on environmental awareness, as well as a reminder of the spiritual relationship between humans and nature. Applying environmental ethics from the ground up has a positive impact on sustainable living.

Abstract

This research explores the types, structures, and functions of compound sentences found in the children’s story “Putri Salju dan Tujuh Kurcaci”. Using a qualitative descriptive method and a content analysis approach, the study carefully examines the text through close reading and note-taking to identify sentences containing more than one clause. The analysis centers on classifying compound sentence types (coordinate, subordinate, and mixed), describing their syntactic structures, and interpreting how they work within the narrative. The results show that compound sentences appear frequently throughout the story and play a key role in maintaining the flow and coherence of events. Subordinate compound sentences are found to be the most dominant, serving not only to link ideas but also to create a smooth and engaging storytelling rhythm for young readers. What makes this study unique is its linguistic focus on a well-known children’s tale a text type that is often overlooked in syntactic research. The findings offer meaningful contributions to language and literature education by providing a practical model for syntactic analysis that can be used in classroom learning, particularly at the elementary and secondary levels. Ultimately, this research supports the integration of linguistic theory and literary text analysis, enriching teaching strategies and helping students build stronger language comprehension skills.

Abstract

This study analyzes the intrinsic elements in Dedik Dwi Prihatmoko’s book, “5 Dongeng Anak Dunia,” using a structural approach. The method employed is descriptive qualitative, utilizing literature review, note-taking, and documentation techniques. The results of the study indicate that all stories possess complete and systematic intrinsic elements (theme, plot, characters, setting, point of view, and style). Dominant themes include perseverance, harmony, mutual aid, kindness, and spirituality. The plot structure employs a simple and progressive narrative, animal characters with human-like traits, and a communicative and personificative writing style. The interconnection of these elements collectively reinforces the moral message. In conclusion, the folktales in this book are effective as a character education medium for early childhood and elementary school students and contribute to the development of a simultaneous structural analysis model.

Abstract

The Bedandeng oral tradition is an intangible cultural heritage of the Kutai Kartanegara community, rich in local wisdom. However, this tradition currently faces the threat of extinction due to a lack of transmission to younger generations. This study aims to describe the aesthetic and didactic functions of Bedandeng oral literature. The aesthetic function focuses on the elements of rhyme and metaphor, while the didactic function encompasses moral, social, and reflective values. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach. Data in the form of Bedandeng oral texts were collected through in-depth interviews with singers and cultural figures using purposive sampling, as well as documentary analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model which includes data condensation, data presentation, drawing conclusions, and verification. The results indicate that the aesthetic function of Bedandeng is realized through consistent end-rhyme patterns (vowels /a/, /-an/, and /i/) and the use of metaphors that deepen emotional meaning. The didactic function encompasses educational values (religious, moral, social, and work ethic) as well as reflective values (introspection and spirituality). The linguistic beauty of Bedandeng has been shown to reinforce the delivery of moral messages, making it an effective medium for non-formal education. This study highlights the importance of integrating Bedandeng into the Merdeka Curriculum as a teaching resource rooted in local wisdom to support the preservation of cultural identity amid the tide of modernization.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of women, power relations, and female agency in Paser folklore using a feminist literary perspective. This study focuses on two folktales, namely "Kutukan Dewi Nilam" and “Pego dan Putri Kayangan” which feature female characters in different social and cultural contexts. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method with a literary feminist approach. Data collection was conducted through a literature review and text analysis using an interactive model. The results of the study indicate that the female characters in both stories are depicted as occupying complex positions within the patriarchal structure. In “Kutukan Dewi Nilam,” the female characters are subject to patriarchal power, where their bodies and identities become objects of social control and punishment. On the other hand, in the story “Pego dan Putri Kayangan,” female characters have greater scope to demonstrate their independence through vigilance and decision-making. This finding suggests that folktales not only reflect patriarchal values but also highlight women’s independence in negotiating their positions.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the emotional expressions of the main character, Anindia, in Noveni Adelia’s novel ‘Hold On, It Hurts’ through the perspective of literary psychology. The focus of this study is to identify the emotional manifestations of Anindia, who is experiencing complex domestic conflicts. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. The primary data source for this study is the novel ‘Hold On, It Hurts’ by Noveni Adelia. Data were collected using the read-and-record technique, involving repeated reading, noting quotations, and classifying them based on theory. Data analysis was conducted descriptively using Paul Ekman’s theory of the six basic emotions: sadness, anger, surprise, fear, disgust, and happiness. The results of the study indicate that the character Anindia experiences all six of these emotions, triggered by her husband’s (Jeandra) betrayal, the presence of a third party (Karinina), domestic violence, and the loss of her professional identity as a doctor due to slander. Sadness and anger emerge as the most dominant emotions in response to the collapse of her marital hopes and the injustices she faces. This study concludes that the depiction of emotions in the novel accurately reflects the psychological turmoil humans face when dealing with trauma and severe mental stress.

Abstract

This study analyzes discourse construction in Ajinomoto's Health Provider advertising campaign using Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis framework, namely the textual dimension, discursive practice, and social practice. Data were drawn from three advertisements titled Bijak Garam Freeze, Langkah Kecil Berarti: Plastic Reduction and Recycle, and The Role Model, published through Youtube platforms. The findings reveal that at the textual dimension, the advertisements employ four main language strategies, namely statistical data usage, invitational diction, practical solution presentation, and corporate identity formation, reinforced by visual representations of community harmony. At the discursive practice dimension, the three advertisements integrate medical health discourse and ecological discourse through production strategies that position company employees as peer-to-peer communication intermediaries. At the social practice dimension, the campaign exploits the social context of hypertension and global pressure on plastic reduction to construct the company's discursive authority. The most significant finding lies in the appointment of Ajinomoto employees as Health Provider representatives, which blurs the boundary between public health education and marketing communication strategy. This study contributes to the development of critical discourse analysis in the context of food product advertising in Indonesia.
