Abstract

This study aims to provide an in-depth exploration of the early reading learning process using letter puzzles as a teaching aid for children aged 3–5 years. This is a qualitative descriptive study. The study was conducted at a Kumon learning center. The research subjects consisted of 10 children aged 3–5 years. Data were collected through direct observation of the children’s activities and an interview with one instructor, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Learning took place through three structured stages introduction, core activity, and conclusion—covering letter recognition, puzzle assembly, and letter pronunciation with the instructor’s guidance. Eight out of ten children were able to correctly identify uppercase letters, while six out of ten children were able to distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters, particularly for letters with similar shapes such as b, d, p, and q. All children demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the activities. The success of the learning process was supported by the concrete and engaging nature of the puzzle medium and the instructors’ individual guidance, although challenges remained due to the children’s limited attention spans and the limited number of puzzles ets available. These findings confirm that letter puzzles are an effective tool for supporting early reading development and literacy in young children and warrant further optimization of their use in preschool settings.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation and construction of leftist ideology in the book “Ayat-Ayat Kiri” (2019), a non-narrative text consisting of quotations from leftist thinkers. Using a sociological approach to literature and a qualitative descriptive method based on content analysis, this study examines five quotations purposively selected from the book’s 119 pages based on their relevance to the theme of leftist ideology. Data were collected through intensive reading, documentation, and coding, then analyzed through reduction, categorization, interpretation, and drawing conclusions using a theoretical framework comprising Marxist perspectives, Gramsci’s concept of hegemony, and Althusser’s ideological apparatus. The research findings identify three main themes - critique of capitalism, class consciousness, and resistance to the domination of power—that form a hierarchical ideological pattern such as “critique–consciousness - resistance.” The construction of ideology in the text occurs through three discursive strategies: the selection of quotations, the repetition of themes, and persuasive framing. This study concludes that non-narrative texts not only represent ideology but also construct it through the organization of ideas and textual strategies, thereby expanding the scope of literary sociology, which has traditionally been dominated by narrative texts. These findings affirm that even fragmentary text forms can serve as a medium for the articulation and reproduction of ideological discourse.

Abstract

Ecocriticism is an approach in literary studies that examines the relationship between literary works and the natural environment. This study aims to describe and analyze the representation of the sea and the relationship between the characters and the sea in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori, drawing on Cheryll Glotfelty’s ecocritical perspective. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method utilizing “read-and-note” techniques. Data analysis was conducted through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal ten data points, comprising three instances of sea representation and seven instances illustrating the relationship between the characters and the sea. The representation of the sea is conveyed through dialogue or monologues mentioning the sea, as well as references to the sea during specific events. The relationship between the character’s direct interactions with the sea anda the sea’s role in framing their experiences. Thus, the study indicates that the sea is present not merely as a natural element but also plays a role in shaping the character’s experiences anda the human-nature relationshi[ within the novel.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of women, the forms of women’s economic struggles, as well as gender inequality and the position of working-class women in the poetry collection *Perempuan-Perempuan Perkasa* by Hartojo Andangdjaja, viewed from a Marxist feminist perspective. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, as it focuses on understanding the meaning within literary works. The data consist of 12 lines of poetry analyzed through intensive reading, note-taking, and contextual interpretation to uncover the social meanings contained within them. Twelve data points were identified, representing three aspects: the representation of women (4 data points), economic struggles (4 data points), and gender inequality (4 data points). The results of the study indicate that women are portrayed as an active and productive working class that sustains the economy. However, women remain in a subordinate position due to the patriarchal system and capitalism. Women’s economic struggles are depicted through hard work, high mobility, and involvement in the public sector. Furthermore, gender inequality is evident in the exploitation of labor and the double burden experienced by women. Thus, this poem not only showcases women’s resilience but also serves as a social critique of gender inequality in society.

Abstract

Digital technology has expanded the environments in which learners encounter and use a target language. This expansion provides access to linguistic input through text, audio, video, social media, applications, online platforms, and artificial intelligence. This study aims to analyze how digital environments provide conditions that potentially support second language acquisition from a psycholinguistic perspective, focusing on the relationship among input, interaction, language production, feedback, attention, and language processing. The study employed a descriptive-analytical literature review. The core corpus consisted of 16 scientific articles published between 2013 and 2026 and identified through Google Scholar. Articles were purposively selected according to their relevance to second language acquisition or learning, language environment, digital media, digital technology, and artificial intelligence. Data were extracted using a structured matrix containing study identity, context, technology or environment, focus, and main findings, and were analyzed through data reduction, coding, thematic grouping, cross-study comparison, and integrative synthesis. The findings indicate that digital environments broaden access to input, create opportunities for interaction and language production, and increase opportunities for feedback and repeated practice. From a psycholinguistic perspective, these affordances can create conditions for attention, processing, and learner engagement. However, the evidence in the corpus is weighted toward learning outcomes rather than direct measures of changes in L2 competence. Therefore, digital environments should not be interpreted as an automatic cause of second language acquisition, but as an indirect and conditional environment whose contribution depends on input quality, motivation, learner agency, digital literacy, distraction, technology dependence, and unequal access.
