Abstract

Folklore plays a significant role in preserving cultural values and transmitting moral teachings across generations. This study aims to identify and describe the narrative functions proposed by Vladimir Propp in the folktale Suri Ikun and the Two Birds from Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative design with Propp's morphological approach, the study systematically analysed the textual data comprising sentences, paragraphs, and narrative events drawn from the folktale as published in the Indonesian Folklore Digital Collection (Kemdikbud, 2018). Data collection involved repeated close reading and note-taking, followed by inter-rater validation. Of the 33 narrative functions in Propp's canonical model, 22 were identified in the folktale: Initial Situation (α), Absentation (β), Interdiction (γ), Violation (δ), Trickery (η), Complicity (θ), Villainy (A), Lack (a), Beginning Counteraction (C), Departure (↑), First Function of the Donor (D), Hero's Reaction (E), Provision of a Magical Agent (F), Spatial Translocation (G), Victory (I), Liquidation of Lack (K), Return (↓), Pursuit (Pr), Rescue (Rs), Recognition (Q), Transfiguration (T), and Wedding (W). Eleven functions were absent, most notably Struggle (H) and Punishment (U), whose absence reflects the cultural tendency in Eastern Indonesian oral traditions to resolve conflict through moral endurance and supernatural reward rather than physical confrontation or retributive justice. These findings confirm that Propp's morphological framework is largely applicable across diverse cultural contexts, while also demonstrating that the selection and realisation of specific functions are culturally contingent.

Abstract

This study aims to uncover strategies for shaping public opinion through artificial intelligence (AI)-based content on the TikTok platform, with a focus on analyzing the inclusion and exclusion of social actors using Theo van Leeuwen’s (2008) model. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using multimodal critical discourse analysis. The data consists of five viral TikTok videos that use AI avatars, generative text, or synthetic voices, which were deliberately selected based on the following criteria: produced by AI, having ≥100,000 views, addressing public issues, and lasting 10–60 seconds. This analysis was conducted by identifying social actors, classifying inclusion/exclusion strategies, analyzing supporting multimodal data such as visuals, audio, and text, and interpreting the implications for public opinion. The results show that all five pieces of content consistently employ suppression strategies against critical actors such as spiritual leaders, health experts, experts in AI ethics, child safety experts, and regulators. Conversely, the content involves actors who promote the logic of entertainment, efficiency, and unreflective consumption through categorization, identification, or designation. Multimodal synergy-whether through visual-auditory dissonance or excessive harmony-reinforces this strategy. The implication is that public opinion is potentially steered toward downplaying existential issues, neglecting health and safety, blind technological optimism, and the normalization of artificial authority.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the types and factors that cause code-mixing, using qualitative descriptive research methods and the matching method. Data collection techniques included listening, recording, and note-taking, while data analysis was conducted using the Determinant Element Sorting technique. The theories applied included sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and multilingualism, as well as the concept of code-mixing according to Muysken and Suwito. The results of the study show that the film’s dialogue contains three types of code-mixing: insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization, with insertion being the most prevalent. Examples of insertion include base words, affixed words, and compound words. Alternation involves switching from Indonesian to English and from Sundanese to Indonesian. Congruent lexicalization encompasses foreign and mixed lexical items. The use of code-mixing is also influenced by factors such as role identification, variety identification, and the desire to explain and interpret. Thus, the use of code-mixing in the film’s dialogue reflects the speakers’ adaptation to their roles, the context, and their communicative needs.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the semantic relationships of homonyms in the Minangkabau language as spoken in the village of Tandikek. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach, focusing on the understanding of meaning, context, and language use among native speakers. Data were collected through observation and interviews, then analyzed using the distribution method and the equivalence method to determine word classes and meanings based on their contextual usage. The results indicate that there are ten homonymous words that share the same form but have distinct meanings and are not interrelated. These words are classified into four categories: noun–noun, noun–adjective, noun–verb, and verb. These findings suggest that homonymy does not occur solely within a single word class but can also involve shifts in grammatical function across word classes. Furthermore, this study confirms that context plays a crucial role in determining meaning, as identical word forms can potentially lead to ambiguity without the support of a clear speech situation. The novelty of this study lies in the use of linguistic data sourced directly from community speech in Nagari Tandikek, an area that has not been extensively studied. This study is expected to contribute to semantic research, particularly regarding semantic relations in regional languages, and to serve as a reference for the development of more contextually relevant language teaching materials.

Abstract

Technical document literacy is a critical competence for Civil Engineering students, yet it has not been optimally integrated into Indonesian language courses at the university level, creating a gap with professional demands in the Construction 4.0 era. This study aims to evaluate the relevance of Indonesian language instruction to the technical communication competence required by IABEE Criterion 1.3.f in Civil Engineering programs. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed through a comparative analysis of Indonesian language Semester Learning Plans from five Civil Engineering programs at public universities. The findings indicate that most RPS remain oriented toward generic academic writing and do not position technical documents such as construction contracts, Cost Budget Plans, Work Plans and Specifications (RKS), and material specifications as primary learning objects, leaving the actual technical document literacy needs of the construction industry unaddressed. The study concludes that recontextualizing Indonesian language teaching through a Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) approach that integrates technical documents and project‑based collaborative tasks is a promising strategy to develop professional literacy aligned with accreditation standards and industry needs.

Abstract

The study of research into death in Javanese literature is important because this theme does not merely represent the end of life. Death also fosters human spiritual, moral and cultural reflection. However, previous studies have tended to focus on religious and formal aesthetic aspects. The integration of religious thanatological, Sufi and Javanese cosmological perspectives in modern Javanese poetry has not yet been extensively examined. This study aims to uncover the symbolism of death in the poetry anthology Wirid Wulangruh by Nyitno Munajat. The research employs a descriptive-interpretative qualitative approach grounded in Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics. The research data consists of two poems on the theme of death, titled “Episode Barzah” and “Yasa Astana Pralaya”. These poems were analysed through the stages of distancing, interpretation, appropriation, and reference. The results of the study indicate that death is constructed as a constructor of meaning, a transitional boundary, transcendent continuity, and an eschatological reality. The symbols of death represent the deconstruction of worldly identity, a spiritual journey towards eternity, and human moral accountability before God. This study reinforces the notion that Javanese Sufi literature functions as a medium for philosophical and spiritual reflection on the nature of human existence.

Abstract

Folklore is a culture that is inherited from generation to generation and lives in society. This study aims to analyze the legend of the origin of the Orang Basap as part of oral folklore in East Kalimantan and identify the value of local wisdom contained in it. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a folkloric approach, using the structuralism theory of Vladimir Propp (1968) to analyze the function of figures and the semiotic theory of Roland Barthes (1972) to analyze the meaning of denotative, connotative, and mythical. The research data was in the form of legend texts obtained from the Indonesian Culture website and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results of the study show that the legend of the origin of the Orang Basap contains a narrative pattern that is in harmony with Propp's morphological theory, with six main narrative functions being found. Semiotic analysis revealed that the symbol of the magic rooster, the ship turned into stone, and the acculturation process contains a deep cultural meaning. This legend also contains three values of local wisdom: social, moral, and belief, which function as a means of character education, social control, and strengthening the cultural identity of the Dayak Basap people.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the distribution of cognitive levels in Indonesian language summative assessment questions for grades VII, VIII, and IX at SMP Negeri 2 Ciledug and to reconstruct Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) questions into Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions based on Anderson and Krathwohl’s Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. This study employed a mixed-methods approach combining descriptive quantitative and qualitative analyses. The data consisted of 150 Indonesian language summative assessment items analyzed according to cognitive levels C1–C6. The results showed that the questions were dominated by the remembering (C1) and understanding (C2) levels. In grades VII and VIII, all questions were categorized as LOTS, while in grade IX, 10% of the questions reached the analyzing level (C4). No questions were found at the evaluating (C5) and creating (C6) levels. The reconstruction results indicated that LOTS questions can be developed into HOTS questions through enriched stimuli, authentic contexts, and higher cognitive demands. This study provides an alternative framework for developing Indonesian language assessments that are more oriented toward higher-order thinking skills in accordance with the Merdeka Curriculum.
