Abstract

Connotative meaning refers to additional meaning that arises through social, cultural and psychological associations beyond the conceptual meaning of a word or expression. n Acehnese and broader Malay society, indirect language remains prevalent, including in literary works such as Cara Ia Membangunkan Aku by Musmarwan Abdullah. This study aims to describe and analyse the forms of connotative meaning found in the short story Cara Ia Membangunkan Aku. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a semantic analysis. The research data consists of words, phrases, and sentences containing connotative meaning in the short story. Data collection techniques were carried out through intensive reading, note-taking, and analysis based on Geoffrey Leech’s theory of connotative meaning. The results of the study indicate the presence of 19 instances of connotative meaning, comprising 7 metaphors, 1 metonymy, 6 sarcasms, and 5 forms of politeness. Metaphors are the most dominant form and are frequently used to describe the psychological state of characters, life experiences, and social relationships. In addition to serving as an aesthetic element, the use of connotative meaning also reflects cultural values, politeness, and the implicit nature of Acehnese communication. Connotative meaning in the short story Cara Ia Membangunkan Aku plays a significant role in enriching meaning, building linguistic aesthetics, and representing the cultural identity of the Acehnese people. The dominance of metaphors demonstrates the strong use of figurative language as a means of conveying messages and reflecting the social life of the Malay community.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and to explore students’ responses, opportunities, and challenges in writing scientific articles. A qualitative approach using a case study design was employed in this research. The study was conducted at Universitas Kusuma Husada in Surakarta in the Bahasa Indonesia course (MKWU) of the Nutrition Study Program. Ten students were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results of the study indicate that students responded positively to PjBL because it provided an active and meaningful learning experience. Students demonstrated improved understanding of citations, article structure, and academic language. PjBL also developed critical thinking skills, collaboration, and self-confidence. However, students face challenges in time management, finding references, and academic language. This study concludes that PjBL effectively supports Nutrition students’ scientific writing skills, provided that intensive guidance is provided during the stages where they encounter difficulties.

Abstract

This study examines the speaking difficulties experienced by Patani Southern Thailand students learning Indonesian in Jambi, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative case study design, this research identifies forms of speaking difficulties, analyzes causative factors, and describes coping strategies. Data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation from eight Patani students enrolled at universities in Jambi. The findings reveal that students face difficulties in vocabulary mastery, sentence construction, pronunciation, self-confidence, and first language Patani Malay interference. These challenges stem from cross-linguistic differences, limited practice opportunities, and unsupportive language environments. Effective coping strategies include participating in the Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) program, engaging in regular speaking practice through diverse media, and creating a supportive Indonesian-speaking environment. This study contributes theoretically to BIPA scholarship, particularly regarding first language interference in speaking acquisition, and offers practical recommendations for universities and BIPA instructors in designing more contextual learning programs for Patani students.

Abstract

This study examines the types and forms of implicatures used as humor strategies in the Indonesian digital comedy talk show “Lapor Pak!”. This study is motivated by the prevalence of utterances containing implied meanings in multi-party interactions among the players, making them interesting for pragmatic analysis. This study aims to describe the types of conversational and conventional implicatures and their linguistic realizations such as declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory as humor strategies in multi-party conversations. A descriptive qualitative approach is used, with data sourced from the actors’ utterances in the episode Lagi, “Komandan Ussy Bikin Andhika Tak Berkutik!” uploaded on the YouTube channel 7 Comedy. Data were collected through observation and recording techniques and analyzed using pragmatic identity and distribution methods. The findings indicate two types of conversational implicatures (11 data) and conventional implicatures (4 data). Conversational implicatures arise from the neglect of the maxims of Quality and Relevance (Grice, 1975), which trigger hyperbole and cognitive dissonance, while conventional implicatures are triggered by specific lexical meanings (attraction, bete) that function as reframing and metapragmatic commentary. These two types are manifested in declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences. The main findings indicate that humor in multi-participant situational comedy is not produced by a single utterance but is constructed collaboratively through sequential responses and negotiation of meaning among participants. This research enriches the study of pragmatics by revealing the relationship between types of implications and mechanisms of collaborative humor in multi-participant conversations, extending the application of Grice's pragmatics beyond monologue or formal discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the use of personification in Rokim’s poetry anthology, “Rindu Yang Dalam”. Personification is one of the most frequently used literary devices in poetry to create imaginative expressions and enhance the emotional impact of literary works. The purpose of this study is to identify the forms and meanings of personification found in these poems. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a stylistic focus. The data source is Rokim’s poetry anthology, “Rindu Yang Dalam”. Data was collected using hermeneutic techniques, including reading, recording, and classifying poetic expressions that contain personification. Data analysis was conducted through identification, classification, interpretation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study show that personification in the anthology serves to bring natural objects and abstract ideas to life by attributing human characteristics to them. The use of personification also reinforces imagery, enhances poetic beauty, and deepens the emotional meaning conveyed by the poets. This study contributes to the development of literary studies, particularly in the analysis of figurative language and poetic appreciation in the field of language and literature.

Abstract

Landorundun is an oral folklore of the Torajan community in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is regarded as one of the region’s most significant traditional narratives. The story recounts the quest of Bendurana, crown prince of the Kingdom of Bone, who journeys to Tana Toraja after discovering a strand of Landorundun’s luminous hair carried to the sea. Guided by supernatural swallows, engaged in londe (traditional poetic exchanges), and aided by a magical mango tree stratagem, Bendurana ultimately secures marriage with Landorundun and establishes a diplomatic alliance between Toraja and Bone. This study examines the narrative structure of Landorundun using Vladimir Propp’s thirty-one narrative functions to identify its morphological pattern and to explore the relationship between universal folktale structure and culturally specific Torajan traditions. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyses the written transcription of the folklore through documentation and structural narrative analysis based on Propp’s morphological framework. The findings reveal that the narrative contains twenty-one of Propp’s thirty-one functions, arranged in a sequence consistent with the Proppian model. At the same time, these functions are realised through distinctively Torajan cultural forms, including londe as a test of social competence, the authority of family and noble hierarchy, and the Basse alliance as a symbol of inter-community solidarity. These findings demonstrate both the cross-cultural applicability of Propp’s morphological theory and the importance of local cultural contexts in shaping narrative expression within Indonesian oral tradition.

Abstract

Albus Dumbledore is consistently portrayed as a rational and wise hero. However, this image is turned on its head in the film “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”, in which he appears as a vulnerable figure unable to act on his own. This study aims to uncover the latent meaning of the Blood Pact in shaping Dumbledore’s vulnerability and to demonstrate the deconstruction of his masculinity. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study integrates Peirce’s triadic semiotics (representamen-object-interpretant) and Derrida’s deconstruction (phalogocentrism, trace, différance, and aporia) to examine indexical signs and the collapse of heroic authority. The findings indicate that the Blood Pact is not merely an accessory but an artifact that bears traces of the past and serves as both a physical and logical obstacle for Dumbledore. He thus becomes a reluctant hero, shackled both physically and logically. Ultimately, his acceptance of the past and the courage to acknowledge his weaknesses actually reconstruct his authentic heroism amid emotional dilemmas.

Abstract

This study examines the morphosemantic patterns of contemporary given names in Indonesia, focusing on births publicly announced between January 2025 and March 2026. Framed within socio-onomastics (Aldrin, 2019) and derivational morphology (Lieber, 2021), this research aims to identify the morphological composition and semantic domains that reflect shifting parental aspirations in a globalized, digitally connected society. The corpus comprises 30 given names purposively sampled from verified digital platforms, including national online news portals, public Instagram accounts, and TikTok announcements. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis identifies morphological structures (monomorphemic vs. polymorphemic compounds), etymological sources, and semantic fields based on referential and connotative meanings. Findings reveal a predominance of polymorphemic compounds (three to five constituents) formed through cross-linguistic compounding, predominantly blending Arabic, Sanskrit, and Western lexical elements. Semantically, five dominant clusters emerge: religiosity, leadership/intellect, aesthetic beauty, wisdom, and aspirational uniqueness. Notably, a significant subset exhibits phonological neologisms (e.g., Perfexio, Clairose), indicating that phonetic aesthetics and distinctiveness are increasingly prioritized over transparent etymological meaning. However, this study explicitly acknowledges its limited generalizability due to the small sample size and urban-digital demographic bias. Nevertheless, the findings offer preliminary insights into how linguistic hybridization and morphological creativity are reshaping Indonesian onomastic traditions within digitally mediated public spheres.
