Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of planting media on the acclimatization of moon orchids (Phalaenopsis amabilis L.) with the addition of Growmore fertilizer. The method used is a quantitative experimental method and treatments are implemented using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The data analysis technique used is the one-way ANOVA test with α= 0.05 and the Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT 5%). The results of this study showed that there was a significant influence on the growth parameters of leaf length (sig. 0.001), plant height (sig. 0.001), root length (sig. 0.004), and number of roots (sig. 0.015). The best treatment for the growth parameters of leaf length and plant height was shown by the P3 treatment (a mixture of 25 grams of chopped fern media and 75 grams of wood charcoal with the addition of 2 grams/liter of Growmore fertilizer). In comparison, the best treatment for the growth parameters of root length and number of roots was shown by the treatment P2 (mixture of 25 grams of sphagnum moss media and 75 grams of wood charcoal with the addition of 2 grams/liter of Growmore fertilizer). However, it did not significantly affect the leaf number growth parameters. Keywords: Acclimatization, Planting Media, Growmore Fertilizer, Phalaenopsis amabilis L.

Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogen known for its ability to form biofilms, making it difficult to eliminate. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ethanol extract from matoa leaves (Pometia pinnata) as an antibacterial and antibiofilm agent against P. aeruginosa. The antibiofilm activity was assessed using the Crystal Violet (CV) method with absorbance measured at a wavelength of 595 nm. The percentage of biofilm inhibition was used to determine the ICâ‚…â‚€ value. Phytochemical analysis revealed that the ethanol extract of matoa leaves contains alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, and triterpenoids, which contribute to its antibacterial and antibiofilm activity. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined to be 25 mg/mL. Inhibition zone tests showed that the ethanol extract at concentrations of 75, 50, and 25 mg/mL produced inhibition zones of 13.33 mm, 12.16 mm, and 10.8 mm, respectively, while the positive control, ciprofloxacin 5 µg, produced an inhibition zone of 35.67 mm. The percentages of biofilm inhibition were 21.51% (50 mg/mL) and 12.34% (25 mg/mL), with an average ICâ‚…â‚€ value of 27.43 mg/mL. These findings suggest that the ethanol extract of matoa leaves has potential as an antibacterial and antibiofilm agent against P. aeruginosa. Abstract

Science learning in higher education is often detached from students' cultural context, thus reducing the relevance of the material and scientific concepts being learned. This study aims to examine how student involvement in a biosynthesis experiment of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Plantago major L. and its antibacterial activity testing can improve students' understanding and attitudes regarding cultural context and science content. The study used a mixed-methods approach involving 34 Biology students in a series of laboratory activities, pretest-posttest knowledge evaluations, and narrative reflections. The characterization results showed an absorbance peak of AgNPs at 460 nm and indicated nanoparticles with uniform size. Meanwhile, AgNPs showed higher antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus than Salmonella typhi. Bayesian paired t-test analysis showed a significant increase in students' knowledge scores, and narrative reflections revealed a strengthening of attitudes towards recognizing culture as a source of science learning. These findings indicate that local resource-based laboratory learning activities are not only biologically relevant but also effective in shaping students' scientific understanding and are culturally meaningful.

Abstract

One of the current issues in education is the low level of students"™ science process skills, which should be a key component in developing 21st-century competencies. This issue is caused by several factors, including limitations in implementing inquiry-based learning models and the minimal use of technology-based learning materials such as E-LKPD. This study aims to analyze the improvement of students"™ science process skills through the implementation of the Modified Free Inquiry learning model assisted by E-LKPD on the excretory system topic at SMA Negeri 2 Kuningan. The research method used was a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group design. The study subjects consisted of two classes: the experimental class, which received treatment using the Modified Free Inquiry learning model assisted by E-LKPD, and the control class, which used the Discovery Learning model assisted by E-LKPD. Instruments used included essay tests (pretest and posttest), student response questionnaires, observation sheets of science process skills performance, and learning implementation observation sheets. The results showed an improvement in science process skills in both the experimental and control classes. The experimental class achieved a higher N-Gain score in the moderate category, and the Mann-Whitney hypothesis test showed that Zcount > Ztable, indicating that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. In addition, the science process skills performance observation sheet showed an average score of 73 in the good category, students gave positive responses to the learning process with an average questionnaire score in the very good category, and learning implementation reached 97% in the very good category. Therefore, the Modified Free Inquiry learning model assisted by E-LKPD is effective in improving students"™ science process skills and is feasible to be implemented in biology learning.

Abstract

Exposure to environmental pollutants leads to the accumulation of free radicals, overbalancing endogenous antioxidant, and exacerbating oxidative stress level within the body. Oxidative stress is one of primary factors causing numerous health issues, such as aging, cardiovascular, and neurodegenerative disorders, highlighting the need for additional antioxidant supplementation. Elephantopus scaber L., known as tapak liman, is a medicinal plant traditionally utilized to manage diseases, including malaria, anemia, and skin infections. However, its potential as an antioxidant supplement remains underexplored. This research investigates the methanol extract of tapak liman leaves, evaluating its phytochemical content, antioxidant activity, and toxicity. Phytochemical screening identified various secondary metabolites, such as of alkaloids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, coumarins, phenolics, quinones, betacyanins, tannins, and saponins. Total phenolic content was found at 17,22 ± 0,15 mg GAE/g. Antioxidant capacity was assessed using ABTS (2,2-azinobis-3-etilbenzotiazolin-6-sulfonat) and FRAP (Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power) assays, resulting IC50 values of 18,78 µg/mL and 19,26 µg/mL, respectively. These values indicated very strong antioxidant activity, slightly higher than those of Trolox® as a vitamin E analog, which showed IC50 values of 13,27 µg/mL (ABTS) and 10,42 µg/mL (FRAP). Toxicity evaluation through brine shrimp lethality test displayed an LC50 of 394,54 µg/mL, indicating moderate toxicity and potential antimitotic activity, which may correlate with anticancer properties. Owing to its vast bioactive components and strong antioxidant capacity, tapak liman leaf extract demonstrates potential as a safe and effective natural antioxidant agent for further development.
