Abstract

Scientific and technological developments have impacted the evolution of education globally, particularly in Indonesia. Students truly need technology-integrated instructional materials in the 21st century learning process so they may master the content through real-world examples and applications. The purpose of this development study is to evaluate the efficacy, usefulness, and validity of the student book that was created. Twenty students served as the trial class for the study, which was carried out at YPK Immanuel Manokwari High School. The ADDIE model, which comprises five stages analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation the development model that is employed. With an average evaluation by teaching and material experts of 86.88% and student responses as users on very good practicality criteria with an average response of 82.71%, the results demonstrated that the student book met very valid eligibility criteria to be used as teaching material. However, with an average N-gain value of 0.0067, the pupils' critical thinking skills score is still included in the poor interpretation requirement. Abstract

Biology education at the secondary school level adopts a scientific approach that emphasizes critical, analytical, and selective thinking skills. Practicum activities, particularly microscope use, are essential components in developing students"™ technical and analytical abilities. However, laboratory utilization at SMA Negeri 1 Kubu has not been optimal. This study aims to describe students"™ knowledge of microscopes and their usage as a basis for improving learning strategies and laboratory management. A descriptive qualitative method was employed using a questionnaire covering four main aspects: the name of the microscope, its function, its components, and how to operate it. The results showed that while all students could correctly identify the name of the microscope, their understanding of its function, components, and operation remained limited. Therefore, it is recommended that teachers increase the frequency of practicum sessions, provide more structured guidance, and apply experiential learning approaches. The implications of this study indicate that enhancing students"™ understanding of microscope use requires effective laboratory management and the implementation of more active and systematic learning strategies to improve students"™ practical competencies and biology learning outcomes.
