Abstract

Berastagi is a popular tourist town in North Sumatra that introduces the Gundaling tourism site. However, the town remains relatively unknown to the wider public due to a lack of information and digital promotion. This study aims to create a tourism promotion video for the Gundaling destination in Berastagi, using vintage effects as a key component to create visual and emotional appeal for the audience. The use of vintage effects, such as vintage filters, soft color gradation, and classic lighting, creates a nostalgic atmosphere that can attract visitors and present Gundaling as a tourist destination offering historical and cultural value in addition to its natural beauty. The video production follows the MDLC (Multimedia Development Life Cycle) method, resulting in 12 promotional video pieces. The use of vintage effects in these promotional videos successfully enhances emotional appeal, strengthens Gundaling's visual identity, and broadens audience reach. It is hoped that this promotional video will help make Gundaling stand out among other tourist destinations by enhancing visual appeal and the overall visitor experience.

Abstract

This art research explores rubber duck toys as a metaphor for happiness, representing childhood memories and positive emotions evoked by simple things. The objectives of this art creation are: (1) to elaborate the concept of happiness through the symbolism of rubber duck toys, (2) to develop creative ideas as artistic expressions in painting, and (3) to explore techniques and concepts that enhance the visualization of artworks. The urgency of this project lies in uncovering the potential of everyday objects to convey philosophical and aesthetic meanings that can be universally appreciated. The method employed is exploration, which includes gathering references, developing ideas, and creating artworks using oil paint on canvas. The exploratory process involved observing the shape, color, and characteristics of rubber duck toys and transforming them metaphorically within the context of happiness. This creation resulted in seven paintings of various sizes, emphasizing aesthetics, narratives, and emotions. The outcomes of this project, represented by paintings, introduce the aesthetics of rubber duck toys, provide insights into painting based on everyday objects, and inspire appreciation for the simplicity of often-overlooked happiness. Beyond being a medium of expression, these artworks serve as a reflection of childhood memories for the audience.

Abstract

This research discusses the Bundo Kanduang Monument in the Nagari Sijunjung traditional village, Sijunjung Regency. According to the KBBI (Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia), a monument is a large and tall pillar made of stone, brick and so on. In another sense, a monument can also be a symbol/icon of the area concerned. This research includes a brief history, shape and colour. This research uses a qualitative approach which includes observation, interviews and literature study. The data used includes primary and secondary data. This research was carried out directly in the field, namely in Nagari Sijunjung, Sijunjung Regency, West Sumatra Province. Based on the results of this research, it shows that Nagari Sijunjung has a strong culture and customs. The existence of traditions and harmony among the people of Nagari Sijunjung is reflected in how they preserve their culture. Bundo Kanduang plays an important role in preserving culture and customs. With the existence of the Bundo Kanduang institution in Nagari Sijunjung, the deliberation and planning process for activities in Nagari Sijunjung runs smoothly. The shape of the Bundo Kanduang monument is a visual of Bundo Kanduang holding a carano on his head, telling how Bundo Kanduang is proof of the high status of women in Minangkabau. How do women and men have the same rights, and no one is superior to men or women in Minangkabau, because everyone has the right to express their own opinions. The colours on the monument illustrate that the characteristics possessed by Bundo Kanduang represent leadership, responsibility, fairness and wisdom.

Abstract

This article explores the creation process of hand-drawn batik artworks featuring the black cat as the main motif in aesthetic bedroom furnishings for a Minangkabau girl, traditionally referred to as “Si Upiak.” The choice of the black cat was driven by the intention to challenge negative stereotypes rooted in traditional myths. Through stylized forms and the hand-drawn batik technique, the author produced seven textile works functioning as both decorative and educational elements, including bed sheets, pillowcases, night lamps, and sleepwear. Each piece combines the visual elements of the black cat and lily flowers as symbols of strength, sincerity, and comfort within a personal space. The creation process follows the stages of preparation, elaboration, synthesis, conceptual realization, and finishing. The resulting works demonstrate a blend of aesthetic, symbolic, and functional values within the context of local culture and contemporary artistic expression. This work aims to enrich the discourse of textile craft art while serving as a medium for value transformation in society.

Abstract

The Broken Wings is a novel by Kahlil Gibran that portrays a tragic love story rich in symbolism and emotional depth. This literary work, which stimulates strong visual imagination, inspired the creation of a series of surrealist-style paintings. The central themes—unfulfilled love and irreversible loss—are reinterpreted visually through impasto techniques using oil paint on canvas. The creative process began with a deep reflection on the novel’s emotional layers, followed by textual and visual research to develop symbolic compositions. A series of sketches explored various compositional possibilities before final realization on canvas. Each painting expresses aspects of the novel’s narrative through metaphorical imagery, colour symbolism, and textured surfaces. The outcome consists of five paintings, each representing key moments or emotional states drawn from the novel. These artworks were exhibited as part of a curated presentation, demonstrating how literature can be transformed into a compelling visual language. This creation contributes to the discourse of interdisciplinary art by bridging literary and visual narratives, offering new insights into emotional storytelling through painting.

Abstract

Artworks in a ritual context, such as the Tabut structure in Bengkulu, are an important medium for representing and maintaining the continuity of collective identity. This paper examines the visualisation of the Tabut as a sociological text to understand the reflection of social reality and the process of cultural identity negotiation among communities that inherit traditions. The study was conducted qualitatively using Arnold Hauser's Sociology of Art and Pierre Bourdieu's Theory of the Field of Cultural Production, supported by visual, historical, and textual analysis. The findings show that the Tabut's visual representation serves two main functions. From Hauser's social perspective, the towering structure and its diverse ornamentation, combining calligraphy, local motifs, and non-Malay elements, reflect the solidarity, acculturation, and plural identity of the Bengkulu community. The transformation of the Tabut from a sacred ritual into a public cultural festival also reflects socio-economic dynamics oriented towards tourism. From Bourdieu's cultural perspective, the visualisation of the Tabut serves as symbolic capital for the Tabut Family Harmony (KKT) in the arena of cultural power. The KKT utilises the iconography of the Tabut to negotiate the legitimacy of the Shia minority identity by reframing the ritual as a universal Islamic heritage, while maintaining spiritual authority through the distinction between the Sacred Tabut and the Development Tabut. Overall, this study concludes that the visualisation of the Tabut structure is the KKT's primary strategy for preserving tradition, adapting to social change, and gaining recognition in Bengkulu's heterogeneous society.

Abstract

The process of creating this artwork is closely connected to the artist’s personal experiences. An emotional attachment to cats serves as a significant source of inspiration in the creative process. The primary aim of this study is to describe the creative process involved in visualizing cat figures as an artistic idea through two-dimensional artworks employing an assemblage approach. This creation process adopts Alma M. Hawkins’ method as a reference for the stages of producing collage-based works, consisting of exploration, experimentation, and realization. The exploration stage involves direct data collection through observation and literature review. The subsequent stage, experimentation, includes developing drawing patterns and beginning to experiment with the assemblage forms and techniques employed. The final stage, realization, encompasses executing the work according to the established design until the finishing process is completed. The distinctive characteristics of cats inspire collage artworks that utilize assemblage techniques, mixed media, and materials such as clay, tissue paper, and magazine cuttings. These artworks depict the daily behaviors of cats on 50 × 60 cm canvases. The final output consists of three pieces that portray various behaviors, myths, and beliefs associated with cat figures, which can be interpreted in relation to human life.

Abstract

The creation of digital visual art in the contemporary era has evolved in tandem with technological advancements and creative software, enabling artists to explore ideas in more flexible and expressive ways. This article examines the practice of creating digital visual artworks themed “Tekad”, representing the values of determination, perseverance, and human resilience in confronting life’s challenges. The concept of tekad is interpreted through a personal and reflective perspective and subsequently translated into visual form through an exploratory approach to visual elements and design principles. This study employs a practice-based research method, positioning the artistic creation process as the primary source of knowledge. The stages of creation include conceptual formulation, visual reference exploration, digital sketch development, visualization processes, and final artwork completion using the Procreate application. Procreate is selected for its ability to simulate manual artistic techniques while offering digital flexibility in managing color, line, and texture. The results demonstrate that the concept of tekad can be powerfully articulated through visual symbolism, expressive line gestures, and color contrasts that reflect emotional tension and inner strength. The resulting artworks function not only as aesthetic representations but also as reflective media expressing inner experiences and humanistic values. This study is expected to contribute to the discourse on digital visual art creation, particularly in the utilization of Procreate as a medium for conceptual and artistic expression.
