Abstract

A rigid and stressful classroom environment can reduce students’ motivation and increase academic anxiety. Humour in learning serves as an effective pedagogical strategy to enhance engagement, reduce tension, and strengthen memory retention. However, not all types of humour positively influence the learning process. This study aims to identify the most effective types of humour and optimal strategies for their implementation in Indonesian higher education. Employing a qualitative-phenomenological approach, data were collected through structured interviews with 40 students from multiple universities. The findings reveal that academic humour is the most effective in improving comprehension and retention, while spontaneous humour promotes student engagement. In contrast, irrelevant or excessive humour tends to distract students from their focus. The study's novelty lies in integrating Islamic educational values with Western educational psychology to explain the role of humour in fostering a balanced, enjoyable, and ethically guided learning environment. The research aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by emphasizing the importance of inclusive and engaging pedagogical practices that enhance the quality of learning in higher education. The study also provides practical recommendations for lecturers to apply humour responsibly as a pedagogical tool that supports motivation, engagement, and meaningful learning.

Abstract

This study examines the use of the Assemblr Edu application in teaching moral education at Sekolah Indonesia Kuala Lumpur (SIKL), Malaysia. Drawing on a qualitative case study approach, the research involved in-depth interviews with teachers and students, complemented by classroom observations to capture authentic learning practices. Findings indicate that the integration of Assemblr Edu significantly increased student engagement and facilitated a deeper understanding of moral concepts by presenting abstract values through interactive and contextually relevant digital content. The use of augmented reality features enabled students to connect moral principles to real-life situations, thus supporting character development in a more meaningful way. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these outcomes particularly support SDG 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive and effective learning through technology-enhanced pedagogy, and contribute to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by strengthening ethical awareness, responsible citizenship, and values-based education. Despite these positive results, the study also identified several challenges, including limited access to technological resources and the need for systematic teacher training to ensure effective implementation. To address these issues, the study proposes practical recommendations focused on strengthening technological infrastructure and enhancing educators' digital competencies. Overall, the study highlights the potential of AI-powered learning tools like Assemblr Edu to enrich moral education, while emphasizing the importance of institutional readiness to maximize their educational impact. These findings contribute to the broader discourse on the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in moral and character education in the context of international schools.

Abstract

The Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia (Kemendikbud), through the 2013 Curriculum, emphasizes the development of 21st-century skills. Teachers, as educational initiators, are expected to equip students with the 4Cs: critical thinking and problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and creativity. To foster these skills, teachers are encouraged to implement student-centred teaching methods that focus on active learning rather than passive instruction. Project-Based Learning (PjBL) aligns with this approach, as it engages students in constructing knowledge and developing skills through meaningful, real-world projects. While PjBL emphasizes authentic learning tasks, Canva Magic Write facilitates digital creativity and linguistic expression, offering a complementary tool for enhancing writing instruction. This combination is to support SDG 4, quality education. This study aims to investigate English teachers’ views on implementing PjBL integrated with Canva Magic Write in teaching writing at the junior high school level. It also explores the challenges teachers face and the strategies they employ to overcome them. This qualitative case study involved English teachers with a minimum of two years of teaching experience. Data were collected through interviews and document analysis, then analysed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that integrating Canva Magic Write with PjBL has excellent potential to enhance students' engagement, creativity, and writing quality. The study contributes to teachers’ education by highlighting the pedagogical value of combining PjBL with digital tools to support the development of 21st-century literacy.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a conceptual model for fostering students’ spiritual intelligence through the ISMUBA curriculum at SMA Muhammadiyah Imogiri, Indonesia, with a focus on promoting sustainable educational practices in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). It employed a qualitative case study design and purposive sampling; participants comprised students from grades X–XII, ISMUBA teachers, and school management as key informants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and documentary analysis of the curriculum and school programs. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns in the integration of spiritual values, and findings were linked to theories of spiritual intelligence and Islamic education through literature synthesis. The results revealed that the six ISMUBA subjects Al-Qur’an and Hadith, Aqidah Akhlak, Fiqh, History (Tarikh), Muhammadiyah Studies, and Arabic collectively enhanced students’ transcendental awareness, meaning-making, ritual discipline, empathy, and social responsibility, all of which contribute to the realization of SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). The proposed model explained implementation mechanisms such as interactive-reflective approaches, teacher exemplarity, habitual religious practices, and adaptation to contemporary issues. The implications of this research provide a practical framework for Muhammadiyah educators and curriculum developers to strengthen the spiritual dimension in teaching.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and analyze the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based learning management strategies in improving numeracy literacy skills of Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) students in the era of society 5.0. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and quantitative tests. Interviews involved lecturers, students, and educational technology experts to explore implementation strategies and challenges of AI integration, while observations were conducted to observe the learning process. Quantitatively, the study used a quasi-experimental design by comparing the pre-test and post-test results between the experimental group (using AI) and the control group (conventional learning), each consisting of 32 students. Qualitative results show that AI-based learning management strategies are carried out systematically through needs mapping, selecting appropriate applications (such as GeoGebra AI and ChatGPT), and automatic monitoring of learning outcomes. AI encourages students to be more independent and interactive, although they still face technical constraints such as limited devices and internet networks. Quantitative results show a significant increase in the numeracy literacy skills of students in the experimental group compared to the control group, with the results of the independent sample t-test showing a significance value of 0.000 <0.05 and an average score difference of 10.11 points. These findings demonstrate that AI-based learning strategies are effective in strengthening students’ numeracy literacy and align with the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). Therefore, AI integration in higher education is highly relevant for advancing sustainable educational practices and preparing future educators to meet the demands of Society 5.0.

Abstract

The development of Islam in the Indonesian archipelago is closely tied to the networks of scholars, including those in the Mataraman region, where Mbah Yahuda played a pivotal role in transmitting Islamic knowledge in the southern area of Java. This study contends that Mbah Yahuda significantly contributed to the spread of Islam through pesantren, which served as centers of classical Islamic scholarship. His long-standing influence is seen in the establishment of major pesantren such as Lirboyo, Ploso, and Jampes in Kediri, as well as others in Trenggalek, Ponorogo, and Pacitan. These institutions share genealogical and intellectual connections that can be traced back to him. Preliminary genealogical data reveals three theories regarding Mbah Yahuda’s origins: a Middle Eastern lineage linked to Sayyidina Hamzah, evidenced by the historical gifting of the KamKam Sword; a Cirebon connection suggested by the presence of a nagasari tree near his tomb; and a Mataram royal lineage supported by genealogical records. His descendants, particularly the Egyptian clan, are associated with pesantren traditions focused on Qur’anic studies and Sufism, while others are known as scholars and government officials. Overall, the scholarly networks rooted in Mbah Yahuda underline the strategic contribution of Indonesian Islamic traditions to sustainable development goals, especially in quality education, peacebuilding, and cultural preservation.

Abstract

Reading proficiency is crucial for academic success, yet many university students, including those at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, struggle with comprehension due to limited vocabulary, lack of critical thinking, low motivation, and traditional teaching methods; thus, innovative strategies like visual media are needed to foster interest and improve reading skills. One such medium, the wall magazine, has shown promise in primary education but remains underexplored in higher education, prompting this study to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing students’ reading abilities and to provide insights for more engaging and interactive pedagogical approaches. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with purposive sampling, involving 39 second-semester English Education students at Yogyakarta State University and several key informants to explore the effectiveness of wall magazine media in enhancing reading skills. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques with triangulation strategies to ensure validity and credibility. This study confirms that wall magazine media effectively enhances reading skills by increasing student motivation, comprehension, and engagement. The project-based and collaborative nature of the media fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a sense of ownership in learning. While students and lecturers responded positively, improvements in content updates and display logistics are still needed. Therefore, integrating wall magazine projects into the curriculum offers a sustainable, student-centered approach to developing literacy and 21st-century skills.

Abstract

This study examines how community-based arts education governance at Sanggar Juju in Semarang contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4 (Quality Education) and 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through cultural preservation. Utilizing qualitative methods, data were collected via observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis included reduction, presentation, and verification, with triangulation used to ensure validity. The findings reveal that the success of Sanggar Juju in managing its programs and growing its membership to 125 students over six years is underpinned by governance practices such as a policy framework, organizational values, participatory principles, and accountability systems. The studio promotes SDG 4 by offering culturally relevant and inclusive learning opportunities in traditional dance and supports SDG 11 by preserving intangible cultural heritage, strengthening social cohesion, and boosting community-based tourism in Kandri Village. Despite these successes, the organization still employs a centralized leadership model, which limits transparency and participation, posing risks to its sustainability and external funding opportunities. The study recommends adopting a collaborative governance model to improve accountability mechanisms, ensuring long-term organizational resilience and enhancing its contribution to the SDGs.
