Abstract

The current research aimed to design an authentic science assessment domain for pre-service science teachers to enhance their higher thinking skills, such as critical thinking skills, being aware that if pre-service science teachers experienced effective authentic assessment domains, they would be much more skillful in their future classes. The research was conducted with the case study as one of the qualitative research designs. The authentic assessment process was performed on Cunningham engineering design integrated with Toulmin argument pattern components. Worksheets were utilized as data-collecting devices for the authentic science assessment process. Descriptions and content analysis were used for the evaluation of the gathered data. At the end of the study, it illustrated an innovative application of an authentic science assessment for pre-service science teachers in detail. Such a creative authentic science assessment process based on Cunningham engineering design integrated with Toulmin argument pattern components made pre-service science teachers construct their argument so as to think critically. Also, the illustrated authentic assessment domain would be a multicultural guide for university educators. In the current research, only an authentic science assessment domain was illustrated, this was the limitation of the research, so for further studies, authentic assessment domain constructions could be suggested.

Abstract

Examining the research on mathematics education of multicultural students in Turkey and identifying weak points can be a guide for better educational practices. The purpose of this study was to review previous studies on the mathematics education of students from different cultures in Turkey and to identify trends in those studies. The research was conducted using the document analysis method. The research data was collected from 36 studies that were found after scans in the Google Scholar and CoHE Thesis Center. Content analysis was used for analyzing the acquired data. The results show that 2022 included the most research on the topic, with secondary school students preferred as research participants in the greatest numbers. Additionally, it has been found that there were significantly more studies out there that purpose to describe the topic. On the other hand, it was determined that the most focused topic in the studies was the challenges in teaching and learning mathematics. It is recommended that more research be conducted on the mathematics education of primary school students from different cultures in Turkey.

Abstract

Religious Education (RE) in North Macedonia holds a significant place in the country's diverse educational landscape, reflecting the coexistence of various faiths within this Balkan nation. This paper aims to investigate teachers’ attitudes toward the impact of Religious Education on students’ behavior, knowledge, and attitudes, considering factors like gender and school type. The study involved 217 primary school teachers from multiethnic regions in North Macedonia. The Teachers' Attitude Questionnaire (TAQ) was employed for data collection. The findings provide insights into teachers' perspectives on the effects of RE. Overall, teachers express positive attitudes towards RE, with a notable percentage acknowledging its positive influence on students’ attitudes towards various aspects of diversity. However, there is variability in opinions regarding its impact on students’ sense of responsibility and behavior. Teachers also diverge in their views on its role in moral development and tolerance promotion. Regarding demographic factors, there is no statistically significant difference in teachers’ attitudes based on gender. However, teachers in multicultural schools exhibit notably more positive attitudes compared to their counterparts in monocultural schools, suggesting that school environment and diversity play a role in shaping perceptions of Religious Education.

Abstract

Mainstream writing instruction risks marginalising non-dominant voices if not consciously adapted using critical multicultural frameworks. This study analyses Mary Lynn Rampolla's widely used A Pocket Guide to Writing in History through a Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) lens, taking notes on voice, power dynamics, and participation elements. The analysis uncovered alignments like the focus on active reading and argumentation. However, tensions emerged regarding the lack of collaborative learning and critical framing of academic conventions. Findings suggest that relying solely on mainstream writing advice risks student empowerment and critical consciousness deficiencies. Writing instructors should supplement individual skill-building with critical perspectives and participatory activities. While conventional guides provide useful starting points, realising the transformative goals of critical multicultural education requires balancing mainstream approaches with conscious efforts to incorporate collaboration, student voice, and critical framing. Further research should build on this study to strengthen writing pedagogy for diversity and equity. It could involve collaborative ethnographic studies in diverse classrooms to examine real-world applications, affordances and limitations. Additionally, studies comparing findings across guides using critical frameworks like CHAT, Critical Race Theory and Critical Discourse Analysis could offer a deeper analysis of patterns and equity implications.

Abstract

While materialism is strongly spreading in society, one of which is in the educational environment, madrasah teachers are supposed to have high spiritualism to be able to control it. This research aims to analyze the interrelation of spiritualism and materialism of madrasah teachers in East Kalimantan. The research used a quantitative-correlative approach with 1604 madrasah teachers in East Kalimantan as the research population. The selected sample, 241 State Madrasah Aliyah teachers, was taken using a purposive sampling technique. Data was collected using a questionnaire instrument, which was then analyzed using linear regression correlation analysis techniques. The research results show that there is a very significant relationship between spiritualism and materialism of madrasah teachers. The higher the teacher's spiritualism, the lower the materialism, conversely the lower the spiritualism, the higher the teacher's materialism. This research has implications for the importance of building the spiritualism of madrasah teachers so that they are not easily influenced by the strong materialism in the current era.

Abstract

Equality in education is a fundamental goal for societies, and educational systems need to provide equal opportunities for all individuals to realize their potential. However, in the current situation, economic, social and cultural differences create inequality of opportunity in education and this is a fundamental problem of education systems. This article emphasizes the importance of achieving the goal of equality in education and discusses the problems encountered in achieving this goal. By examining the root causes and consequences of inequalities in education, it aims to better understand these problems. Furthermore, the article presents key strategies for achieving equity in education. These strategies include reviewing education policies, training and supporting teachers, increasing access to education for disadvantaged groups, using technology-based education methods and developing anti-discrimination awareness programs. In this context, the goal of achieving equity in education is critical for social development and human rights, and the paper aims to provide a roadmap for equity in education, presenting the steps and strategies needed to achieve this important goal.

Abstract

This research is based on recognizing the Islamic concept of multiculturalism and multicultural coaching in Kinderglobe Kindergarten, where the people involved in the kindergarten (principals and teachers) have a thick Islamic background and experience. This research aims to know the pattern of multicultural development and religious reasons used in multicultural development at Kinderglobe Kindergarten. This qualitative case study, using an analytic descriptive method, was conducted at Kinderglobe Kindergartens in two locations, in Pamulang Tangerang Selatan City of Banten Province and Gunung Sindur of Bogor Regency. Data were collected using observation, interviews, and documentation. They were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles et al., i.e., data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion. The data, then, were validated using the triangulation technique. The results showed that multicultural coaching was implemented intentionally and planned through the activities in the class (curricular) and outside the class (non-curricular). For religious reasons, multiculturalism is part of Islamic values, and practicing multicultural education is part of da'wa bil hal. This da’wa bil hal is also called multicultural da’wa because it is practiced in a multicultural society. The research implies that da’wa bil hal must be implemented in children's education because it is fundamental to develop their personality in a plural society.

Abstract

Due to the high number of incidents involving the suppression of religious freedom, West Java Province is frequently regarded as the most intolerant province in Indonesia. Islamic religious teachers are among the actors who perpetuate bigotry and commit breaches. This research aims to explore the views of moderate Islamic Religious Education teachers regarding freedom of expression and hate speech on social media, as well as the significance of multicultural education. This descriptive research method is based on data obtained from moderate Islamic religious education teachers in West Java. Data were gathered via in-person interviews, telephone conversations, email, and social media platforms. Moderate Islamic religious teachers in West Java assert that limitations on individuals' freedom of speech may be implemented in order to protect the human rights of others or groups and are enforced following explicit and measurable legal norms. They argue that equitable legal enforcement can effectively address the pervasive dissemination of hate speech on social media. Nevertheless, multicultural education is the most dependable approach for mitigating hate speech, fostering civility, promoting ethical behavior, and safeguarding responsible freedom of expression. The importance of a broader perspective on the religious attitudes and behavior of Islamic teachers is among the important implications of this research. The researchers recommend that religious moderation literacy be continuously internalized and socialized to Islamic religious teachers.
