Abstract

This research was a quantitative study using a questionnaire instrument. This study aimed to determine the responses of students of SMP Negeri in Bandar Lampung in the learning process using the WhatsApp application and to analyzed its effectiveness from the results of the questionnaire. Students involved in this study amounted to 30 students. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan pola struktur naratif novel Osakat Anak Asmat karya Ani Sekarningsih. Struktur naratif novel OAA dianalisis berdasarkan perspektif teori naratologi Gerard Genette yang memfokuskan kajian pada lima struktur naratif, yaitu urutan naratif, durasi naratif, frekuensi naratif, modus naratif, dan suara naratif. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Analisis data didasarkan pada teori naratologi Genette yang meliputi dua tahapan, yaitu analisis parsial dan analisis integral. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ditemukan pola struktur naratif novel OAA sebagai berikut. Pertama, formula novel OAA disusun dengan pola urutan naratif yang akroni (achrony). Kedua, terdapat dua gerakan durasi naratif yang digunakan, yaitu adegan (scene) dan jeda (pause). Ketiga, frekuensi naratif yang digunakan di dalam novel adalah representasi tunggal (singulative representation). Keempat, modus naratif novel OAA adalah teknik narator di luar cerita, teknik fokalisasi yang digunakan adalah fokalisasi nol. Kelima, teknik narator dan fokalisasi novel OAA berhubungan dengan tingkat suara naratifnya yaitu ekstradiegetik-heterodiegetik. Adapun waktu penceritaan novel OAA adalah simultaneous atau penceritaan masa kini, yaitu teknik penceritaan yang mengambil latar waktu penceritaan pada satu masa yang terjadi di dalam novel.Kata kunci: novel etnografis, struktur naratif, Gard Genette DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v19i1.pp15-27

Abstract

The term of discourse in society has a number of understanding. In this paper discourse is interpreted as an attempt done to dismantle the critically purposes and specific meanings that exist in society beyond the visible discourse. Therefore, this type of discourse called critical discourse. That is, discourse which is critical to disassemble the meaning or intent behind the phenomena or events that developed in the community, such as social issues and political issues that can not be interpreted by conventional discourse analysis. Specifically, the focus of critical discourse lies in the structure of discourse which make, confirm, legitimize, reproduce, or against a relationship of power and domination in society. Meanwhile, its function for the society is to dismantle the abuse practices of power, domination, hegemony, ideology, social class, gender, race, discrimination, interest, reproduction, institutions, social structure, or social order.

Abstract

The English lessons in the school curricula are designed to be a benchmark of student foreign language competency measurement. To succeed in every single aspect of the lesson, students need to enhance their will and motivation so they can fulfill all the needs and complete it. Self-efficacy is one of the most critical factors which can sustain student academic intention amongst all. Thus, the role of experience is one of the factors which can keep a prominent way of developing functional self-efficacy. As a form of experience, playing a video game (also known as gaming behavior) is the one who considered valuable in hoisting the effectiveness of student's English learning, especially in developing the existence of student's self-efficacy. Some students in different stages of formal education schools like elementary, and senior high scholars with different specifications toward the experience and the characteristics of self-efficacy will be the object of this research. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, six students from a different grade and school are analyzed and proved in having self-efficacy toward English lesson. This thing implies that students that have some experiences in playing digital games are provided with self-efficacy and appears more dominant than the students without such experiences. http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v21i1.pp17-32

Abstract

Tulisan ini mendiskusikan tataran penceritaan dalam novel The Powerbook (2000) karya Jeanette Winterson dengan berfokus pada konsep ecriture feminine atau tulisan feminin, yang mengacu kepada struktur dan bentuk narasi. Jeanette Winterson adalah salah satu penulis perempuan dalam kesusastraan Inggris yang karyanya memperlihatkan bentuk tulisan feminin sebagai wacana tandingan terhadap falogosentrisme. Karya-karya Winterson memperlihatkan perbedaan dalam tataran penceritaan dari bentuk-bentuk penarasian konvensional. Dalam novel The Powerbook, bentuk tulisan feminin dalam tataran penceritaan ditunjukkan dalam bentuk narasi yang terfragmentasi yang hadir dalam tiga bentuk berbeda, yakni narasi narsisistik, penarasian publik dan demitologisasi sejarah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bentuk narasi yang ditampilkan di dalam novel meresistensi wacana falogosentris dengan menampilkan bentuk tulisan perempuan yang memanifestasi cara perempuan memaknai dunia. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v18i2.pp122-132

Abstract

The success of the second language acquisition by students is determined by the second language vocabulary mastery as vocabulary is the words that make up a language. The present study aimed at investigating the vocabulary mastery level and vocabulary learning strategies of students majoring in English. The participants were 46 students of the third-year English Education Department at the University of Lampung for the 2020/2021 academic year. This study applied a descriptive quantitative research design, with data collection instruments of test and questionnaire. A vocabulary size test was utilized to identify the students’ vocabulary mastery level. Meanwhile, the questionnaire was employed to explore the learning strategies used by the students to enhance and retain their vocabulary knowledge. The researcher analyzed the data statistically and then described the data so that a reliable finding could be obtained. The results revealed that most English Education Department students at the University of Lampung were above the median vocabulary mastery level. Furthermore, in learning vocabulary, using English media was the most preferred strategy, while talking to a native speaker is the least used strategy by the students.Keywods: Second language acquisition, vocabulary mastery, vocabulary learning strategies, vocabulary size.

Abstract

This study was aimed at investigating a number of Balinese customary terms used as daily life regulators (norms) by describing: (1) Balinese customary terms used as norms for standards of behaviour in social life; and (2) social values reflected in the Balinese customary terms used as regulators to behave in everyday social life. This research was conducted in a village of Balinese immigrants, Central Lampung regency, through descriptive qualitative approach. The data collected were then analyzed through a qualitative analysis of flow model. The results show that there are thirty Balinese customary terms studied sociolinguistically described in a consistent pattern based on their real meaning, social meaning, social values, and their implications alphabetically. In addition, there are 10 terms in base words, six terms in derived words, one term in dwipurwa, and 13 terms in combined words. This study provides an illustration that the Balinese still preserve their customary terms as a culture passed down from generation to generation. The implications of the Balinese customary terms, generally, refer to the formation of behaviour for maintaining the balance between people, environment, and the Creator. The implications and significance of social values studied sociolinguistically fall into a very high category with a total of 22 terms (73%) and a high category with a total of eight terms (27%).Key words: Balinese customary terms, Balinese immigrants, social values, normsPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginventarisasi sejumlah istilah adat Bali yang digunakan sebagai pengatur (norma) dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat sehari-hari dengan mendeskripsikan dan memaparkan: (1) butir-butir istilah adat Bali apa saja yang dijadikan sebagai norma bertingkah laku dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat oleh transmigran Bali di Kabupaten Lampung Tengah; dan (2) nilai-nilai sosial apa saja yang tercermin dari istilah adat Bali yang dijadikan pengatur bertingkah laku dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat sehari-hari oleh transmigran Bali di Kabupaten Lampung Tengah. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan penggunaan metode penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan analisis data yang mengacu pada teori analisis kualitatif model alir. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga puluh istilah ada Bali yang dikaji secara sosiolinguistik yang dideskripsikan dengan pola yang konsisten berdasarkan arti, makna sosial, nilai-nilai sosial, dan implikasinya secara alfabetis. Dari hasil kajian terdapat 10 buah istilah kata dasar, enam buah kata turunan, satu buah kata ulang dwipurwa, dan 13 buah gabungan kata. Kajian yang dilakukan secara konsisten memberikan gambaran bahwa suku Bali mempedomani nilai-nilai sosial istilah adat Bali sebagai suatu kebudayaan yang bersifat turun-menurun. Implikasi dari istilah adat Bali pada umumnya mengarah pada pembentukan tingkah laku dalam menjaga keseimbangan terhadap antarwarga, alam sekitar, dan Sang Pencipta. Implikasi dan kebermaknaan nilai-nilai sosial istilah adat Bali yang dikaji secara sosiolingustik menunjukan kategori sangat tinggi yang berjumlah 22 buah istilah (73%) dan yang termasuk kategori tinggi sebanyak 8 buah istilah (27%).Kata kunci: istilah adat Bali, transmigran Bali, nilai-nilai sosial, norma

Abstract

This article is a descriptive qualitative study. The aims of this study are to identify types of satirical expression and identify the translation techniques used to translate the satirical expression found in serial television subtitle entitled ‘Bridgerton’. The utterance contains satirical expression found in 5 episodes of the serial television used as data in this research—the data obtained through content analysis. There are four types of satirical expression analyzed in this research; irony, satire, cynicism and sarcasm. Furthermore, the result suggests that there are 66 data of satire, 49 data of cynicism, 29 data of sarcasm, and 27 data of irony. On the other hand, there are 13 translation techniques applied in translating the utterance of satirical expression. The most dominant technique used is reduction (29) followed by discursive creation (23), established equivalent (23), literal translation (22), compensation (21), linguistic compression (20), transposition (14), modulation (8), linguistic amplification (4), borrowing (3), particularization (2), adaptation (1), dan substitution (1). The use of reduction technique is to shorten the subtitles that appear on the screen. Keywords: satirical expression, translation techniques, subtitle, serial television.

Abstract

Teachers experience particular difficulties in learners’ writing activities for academic purposes. Teachers should concern more about this phenomenon. One of the strategies to explore this fact is by determining an assessment procedure to encompass the writing direction during the learners’ writing process. Understanding learners’ difficulties and defining direction to solve those difficulties are significant for teachers to develop writing direction. This research applied a case study method to investigate the directional concern that Indonesian high school teachers’ arranged derived from a think-aloud protocol (TAP) assessment, which the researcher suggested. The researcher interviewed three Senior High School teachers about the argumentative writing performance of their three learners by applying the TAPAssessment. After the TAPassessment, the teachers’ directional concerns contained more elements related to the process of writing, even though they still ignored several significant processes. The inference result was that writing teachers’ professional development gave directional plans so that teachers were facilitated to work on writing assessment data thoroughly for the whole organization aspects. http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/aksara/v20i2.pp55-71

Abstract

 A speech become a media to deliver an idea and thoughts which lead someone to show an ideology which reflected on the utterances. The aim of this research was find out the Ideology of Stephen Hawking that was reflected on his speech entitled ‘The Universe’ which uploaded on TEDTalks through the use of illocutionary act. The research method used was descriptive qualitative to get deep analysis by using note taking technique and the data was analyzed by using an approach of critical discourse analysis by Fairclough. This research utilized Speech Act by Austin (1962 and Searle (1977). The results showed that Stephen gave a lot of information from what he has known and proved about the universe then emphasized to the viewer that Big Bang is the beginning of the universe. It is supported by illocutionary act which used by Stephen Hawking, about 33,33% from the whole utterances the speaker used representative illocutionary act in act of informing. Key Words: Critical Discourse Analysis, Speech Act, Illocutionary act, and Representative act
