Abstract

As the development of technology, advertisers who use print media utilize image and text to achieve its economic goals. In trying to understand meaning within the advertisement, we should be able to read and interpret all the semiotic resources. This study was aimed at investigating the verbal and visual elements found in beauty product advertisements in Indonesian women’s magazine. The data were the multimodal clauses of 12 beauty products advertisements taken from three Indonesian women’s magazines, namely Femina, Cosmopolitan Indonesia and her world Indonesia which were published in March 2018 by using snowball sampling technique. In order to identify the verbal and visual elements, Cheong (2004) framework of generic structure advertisement was used. The findings showed that Display which serves to describe the product in a real and explicit way and Enhancer as the linguistic element which function is to give detail explanation about the product appear to be the obligatory elements in beauty product print advertisement. Meanwhile, elements like Lead, Announcement, Emblem, Tag, Call and Visit Information are optional in the structure of print advertisements. Thus, it is found a new GSP of beauty product advertisement as following: (Lead)^ Display^ (Announcement)^Enhancer^(Emblem)^(Tag)^(Call and Visit Information).Keywords: Verbal and Visual, Beauty Advertisements, Indonesian Women’s Magazine

Abstract

This study investigates grammatical metaphor in the English textbook of Junior High School. The objectives of the study are to identify what grammatical metaphor are used in Junior High School English textbook, to describe the way those grammatical metaphor are used, and to explain the reason why the English textbook of Junior High School uses those grammatical metaphors. The research was conducted by applying descriptive qualitative design. The data for this study were texts taken from an English textbook for Junior High School. The data were collected by selecting the texts based on their subjects, then retyping the passage of the text, editing the passage by breaking down the clauses into a data, and printing out the data. The findings of the study show that there are five grammatical metaphors used in the English textbook, namely the realization of epithet = thing, event = thing, event = epithet, head = modifier, and manner = epithet. It is found that the reason why the English textbook uses the grammatical metaphors is in order to make the information compact or denser which directs the students to a scientific writing model mostly applied in their higher educational level. Abstract

A number of ecological linguists, using critical discourse analysis, have found that between culture, language, and biodiversity has a correlation. One of them is Suku Anak Dalam or called Orang Rimba. Suku Anak Dalam is a semi nomadic ethnic group living in National Park of Bukit Dua Belas, Jambi Province. The language is indigenous and endangered so that it must be documented. The speakers of a language will lose their language; even language is often regarded as a symbol of tribal identity or national identity. In the midst of the widespread use and dissemination of foreign vocabulary, some regions still maintain the cultural vocabulary that characterizes the region. This research was conducted for the reason of collecting the lexical items from Suku Anak Dalam language into a dictionary. Abstract

At present time, millions of people work in the maritime field worldwide. Of the millions people, they come from different countries with a diverse background with different level of English proficiencies which they bring from their home countries. That is why; the mastery of standard maritime communication system is a must. To be able to communicate correctly and properly in the Maritime World and industry, the ships’ crews must understand and master the typical features of Maritime English. This paper focuses and reviews an account of the typical features of Maritime English communication in terms of 1) Maritime English spelling system in communication, 2) maritime symbols and their meanings, and 3) typical expressions. Abstract

The objectives of this study were to describe the translation quality in Bound novel. This study followed the theory of Nababan et.al (2012) about the three aspects of translation quality namely (1) accuracy; (2) acceptability; and (3) readability. This research uses descriptive qualitative method as the research design. The data of this study were gathered by using the documents and questionnaire by the raters. The results analysis from the raters showed that translation quality in Bound novel were less accurate with the average points around 2.75, acceptable with the average points around 2.92 and readable with the average points around 3.0. Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out whether: 1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using the Directed Reading Thinking Aactivity (DRTA) strategy was higher than taught by using the Questions-Answer Relationship (QARs) strategy. 2) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high curiosity was higher than that  The students with low curiosity, and 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on The students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade XI of MAN Kampung (MAN KP) Teungoh Langsa in 2016/2017 school year. The total number of population of this research was 160 students. There were 6 classes. Two classes were chosen consist of 30 students of each class so 60 students were selected as sample of this research by applying multistage cluster random sampling. The research design was experimental research by using factorial design 2x2. The XI IPA2 class was taught by using Directed Reading Thinking Activity and XI IAI was taught by using Questions-Answer Relationship (QARs) Strategy. Curiosity questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students upon the high and low curiosity. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significant. The results of the data analysis proved that: 1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy is higher than students achievement in reading comprehension taught by Questions-Answer Relationship(QARs) Teaching strategy. 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Keywords: Curiosity; Comprehension; Achievement; Teaching Strategies

Abstract

This study is based on the fact that the readers get words emotion after reading the tweets of covid-19 news. Various emotions found on the tweets of twitter relate to the Covid-19 news. Some of them make the readers being fear or sad of this pandemic. This study deals with semantic emotion of covid-19 news in twitter account of CNN Breaking News. The objectives of the study is to investigate how the semantic emotions realized in Covid-19 news. The study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative. The data of this study were words from tweets which contain semantic emotion of Covid-19 news in twitter. The sources of data in this study were Covid-19 news in twitter, after vaccine Covid-19 distributed since beginning of January 2021. It was found that emotions were realized in covid-19 news, namely: basic emotion, emotional relations, caused emotions, causative, emotional goals, and complex emotions. Contrary with the expectation, happiness was the dominant emotion found in covid-19 news on twitter. Happiness is an emotion to show pleasant, while covid-19 in unpleasant situation. But in this research, it was found that happiness had a high frequency.Keywords: Semantic Emotion, Covid-19, Twitter, Vaccine

Abstract

The objectives of the study was To find out to what extent does the design of story book in English match the preschoolers’ language development, to find out how story book in English designed to cope with the Pre-schoolers, to find out the reason why  story book in English designed as it was for pre-Schoolers. The study was research and development. The existing story book was Moo’s Smelly Jumper from David Brown. There were several uncommon words, and the book was not intended in indicators K-13 Curricullum.  The researcher wanted to develop a new story book in English for Preschoolers in Medan based on the position of EFL in Indonesia and the preschoolers’ language development in English. The story book was about my pets and me. The researcher develop 6 of pets, cat, rabbit, fish, bird, dog, and rooster. The researcher create the uncommon words to be common word to the preschoolers by presenting the explanation of picture of the object, and the function of the object. the story book was intended to the indicator in K-13 Curricullum. The findings of the study showed that (1)  The findings of the existing story book the total score in general were ”2” (the criteria was partially met). And then, preschoolers’ language development, namely 80% matched with Slobin’s theory in Semantic, 76% in Grammatic and 72% preschoolers in Phonology. (2). Based on the validation of the book by the experts, the book got some the revision in the content and in the layout. Finally the book would be : The content : Included the learning outcome, the text was intended to achieve the indicator of K-13 curricullum, namely preschoolers are able to love the pets such as rabbit, cat, dog, birds, and roooster. The layout : the size of page number was not too big, the background was colorfull to attrack The preschoolers’ attention. The series book of “Gunggung is my Dog, Brave Rooster, Miaw the Cheerfull cat, Bird’s sad whistle, and Missing Fish  ” had been design to achieved the standard competence which was written in syllabus kemendikbud no 37, “the preschoolers can love the God’s living things” where the theme was “Pets” in the first semester.  Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the book was appropriate for Preschoolers in Medan. some suggestion were directed to To teacher of Preschool in Medan supposed giving more attention to the preschoolers’ language development in Medan in doing story telling by using a story book in English, to other researcher, it was suggested that this reseach could be further expanded, elaborated, and explored in other field in ordet to contribute the development, especially in story book, and to all the readers, it was suggested to use this research as the reference for other research in educational research and Development.Keywords : develop, story book, PreSchoolers,

Abstract

This study addresses the translation of passive voice in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban into Bahasa Indonesia. The study was based on descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected by applying documentary techniques. There were three chapters taken as the source of the data. They were chapters 1, 8 and 15. The findings indicated that there were two types of passive voices as a product of passive voices’ translation in Bahasa Indonesia. The passive voice retained as passive one in TL was more dominantly translated into passive voice type one than type two in TL. It caused the use of prefix di+verb base, prefix di+verb base suffix i, and prefix di +verb base+ suffix+ kan are able to represent the meaning of the SL literally and culturally. The changing of English passive voice into Bahasa Indonesia active voice when they were translated indicated that the translator has attempted to find the closest natural equivalent of the source language in aspect of grammar, style, and cultural value. In essence naturalization rate of an expression is a matter of looking for matches in level lexical categories, grammatical categories, semantic, and cultural context.   Key words: translation, passive voice, English, Bahasa Indonesia.
