This study discusses about language use occurred by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objective of this study is to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. Keywords: Language Use, Gender, Talk Show

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study is to explain the reason of using the Impoliteness Strategy realized by 7- Year- Old Children. Research design This research is descriptive qualitative research. Data analysis To obtain the data 10 children were observed In doing the analysis. Miles, Huberman and Saldana 2014 steps theories were used. To achieve the objective the steps used were data condensation, data display, and data verification. Result. The result shows that the reason of using the impoliteness strategy were mocking (30%), to get / to show power over action or conversation (30%), to vent negative feeling (28%), to show disagreement (12%), while to entertain the target audience wasn't found (0%).Keywords: Reason, Impoliteness, Mocking, Entertain

The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show, (2) to elucidate language use represented by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show and (3) to describe reasons of different language use by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show in the ways they are. Additionally, the data are analyzed by applying theory of Interactive Model. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts such as specialized vocabulary, expletives, empty adjectives, tag questions, polite form and telling joke or humor. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. There are common expressions generally referring to English expletives such as: bad language, profanity, swearwords, cursing, foul language, etc. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. And the reason of this matter because of some factors such as psychology and different social status.Key words: Language use, Gender, Talk show

This research was aimed at finding out the degree of metacognitive strategies applied by English Department students of UNIMED in listening comprehension and the difficulties of application metacognitive strategies by English Department students of UNIMED in listening comprehension. The study was conducted to 28 students in fourth semester of English Department of UNIMED Medan. Since the study was a qualitative research, the data were analyzed qualitatively by means of observation, questionnaire, Think Aloud Protocols (TAP) and interview. The questions in questionnaire and interview were based on Chammot’s and O’Malley’s. As findings, the data analysis shows the degree of application metacognitive strategies. The students’ application is low since they only applied some parts of sub-categories in metacognitive strategies as their habit in doing their listening task. They often lose their concentration while they are listening to the speakers. They cannot write down the sentences that were uttered by the speakers and write down the unuttered ones. They cannot comprehend the listening well and it makes them feel worry, doubt, nervous and others negative feeling. Based on the results, some implications and suggestions for future research are discussed. Keywords: Listening comprehension; Listening strategies; Metacognition; Metacognitive Strategies

English conversation is an important lesson for Senior High School students in order to face the globalization effects. Many students considered English conversation as a controversial lesson through their positive and negative attitudes toward it. This study aimed to reason for the Senior High School students realize their attitudes toward English conversation class in the ways they are. This qualitative study was conducted at the twelfth grade of Senior High School students. The subjects of this study were 20 students consisting of 11 females and 9 males at the age of 16-18 years old. The data were collected by observations and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that there were four reasons of the students realized their attitudes i.e. the (1) language pride, (2) awareness of language norms, and the new findings were (3) motivation to get the job, and (4) lack of skill. It was concluded that the students’ attitudes varied as to positive and negative ones and realized in numerous manners affected by several factors.Keywords: language, attitudes, conversations

This study was aimed at examining the violations of conversational maxim in Satu Indonesia talk show. The objectives of this study were to examine the types of conversational maxim violations occurred in the talk show, to examine the realization of conversational maxim violations, and to elaborate the reasons. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was Satu Indonesia talk show. There were 44 episodes of Satu Indonesia talk show in 2014 which were consisted of 14 politics, 15 economics, and 15 socials. Then, the utterances of host and guests in 3 episodes of politics, 3 episodes of economics and 3 episodes of social were the data of this study. The technique of data collection was documentary technique and the instrument of data collection was recorder. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles and Huberman. The findings showed that all conversational maxim violations. Quality maxim was dominantly violated in topic of politics; quantity maxim violation was dominantly violated in the topic of economics and social. Realizations of conversational maxim violations were realized through understatement, overstatement, contradiction, sarcasm, metaphor, associative clues, presupposition, personification, synecdoche, and analogy. The objective of this study is to explain the reason of utilizing modality in Teaching Learning Process. The research methodology used in the research is qualitative research design. The data were analyzed by applying the theory of Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings of this study revealed that the reasons of the teacher applied the modality to give the instruction during teaching learning process and to show the power of the teacher in managing the class and to encourage the students to give feedbacks or responses to the teacher. The research deals with translation shift in Garfield takes his licks a bilingual text. The objectives of the study were: (1) to find out the types of shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (2) to describe how the shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, (3) to analyze the reasons why translation shifts occur in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases, and clauses were translated from English into Indonesian. The data were collected through documentary technique. The technique of data analysis was interactive model. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) The category shifts in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text are 1) structure shift, 2) class shift, 3) unit shift, 4) intra system shift, and 5) double types of shift. (2) There were some ways of translation shift used in Garfield “Takes His Licks” a Bilingual Text, namely grammatical change occurred, change in different word class, change in ranks and change in number. (3) There were four reasons of using translation shifts are (1) Different language systems, (2) Grammatical structures of SL do not exist in TL, (3) Literal translation is grammatically possible but may not accord with natural usage in the TL (naturalness between SL and TL) and (4) replacing virtual gap by grammatical structure.Keywords: Structure Shift, Class Shift, Unit Shift, Intra System Shift.

ABSTRACTThe aims of this study were to describe the kinds of Conversational Implicarture, to explain the ways of performing implicature and to describe the contex of implicature by Arsy And Arsya in Youtube channel. This research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were the utterences of Arsy and Arsya in Youtube Channel. The data analyzes by using theory of conversational implicature.the result of this study were 1) the kinds of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya found in the text, they are Qualitative Maxim, Quantitative Maxim, Relevant Maxim, and Mannner Maxim. The analysis has found that Quantitative appeares in Arsy and Arsya YouTube Channel. (2)The process of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya in Wonderland YouTube Channel is realized through politeness strategies. (3) The reasons of the realization of conversational implicatures used by Arsy and Arsya in Wonderland YouTube Channel is realized through the system of tenor formed as [unequal/informal/positive/frequent]. It is found that there are are four. They are involved Bald on Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Off the Record. Off the record is the higher result found. Since she give codes to the hearer to get what her intentions, and it sometimes coded by gesture. . While in Arsya’s utterances, the types of politeness implicatures found are three. They are involved Bald on Record,Positive Politeness, and Off the Record. Off the record is the higher result found.
