Abstract

Background: Blended learning is a new system that combines face-to-face and online learning. This new system in the Muhammadiyah Purwokerto University (UMP) requires evaluations from the students’ feedback. Students' motivation was the influential factor on both accomplishments and presences in online learning. Students’ motivation, satisfaction, and knowledge of blended learning were the components for the effectiveness of the course. Objective: The study aims to describe the level of motivation, knowledge, and learning satisfaction, and also to observe the correlation of motivation on blended learning with knowledge and learning satisfaction. Methods: This quantitative research used a cross-sectional approach. Data collection techniques used were questionnaires in the google form. The researcher made the questionnaire and has been tested for validity on 30 respondents with r-value of >0.3 (Pearson product-moment). Cronbach alpha for the reliability was ranged from 0.750 to 0.828, so it is valid and reliable to use. The sample was 254 nursing students from the 3rd, 5th, and 7th semesters selected by quota sampling. Data were analyzed by Pearson product-moment correlation. Results: The results showed that students obtained moderate motivation (71.3%), knowledge (81.5%), and satisfaction (70.5%). There was a significant correlation between motivation with knowledge (r=0.650, p<0.01) and learning satisfaction (r=0.636, p<0.01) on blended learning. Conclusion: The blended learning method can be used as a teaching and learning method for future nursing education, followed by evaluation. Furthermore, the lecturer should consider the students’ characteristics and expectations toward blended learning.

Abstract

Selenium (Se) deficiency is associated with certain abnormalities, such as Keshan disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), viral infections, infertility, immune system abnormalities, metabolic diseases, neurological disorders, and growth retardation. Its antioxidant properties are integrated into various selenoenzymes, mainly glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and thioredoxin reductase (Trx). These selenoenzymes act as a protective mechanism to prevent oxidative stress-induced cellular injury, regulate DNA transcription, and cell proliferation. Decreased levels of antioxidants induce reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation resulting in loss of mitochondrial structure and function. The antioxidant properties of selenium could depress ROS and modulates autophagy by interfering initiation of autophagy and phagophore formation. Inhibition at the initiation stage not only involves mTOR and AMPK, an autophagy-related regulators, but also autophagy markers, including Beclin 1, Atg5, LC3, and p62; thus, phagophore and autophagosome are not formed. This review will discuss the role of selenium in modulating autophagy in various organs.

Abstract

More sensitive diagnostic methods for detecting worms’ eggs are needed in areas with low soil-transmitted helminth (STH) prevalence. The Harada-Mori technique was first introduced by Mr. Harada and Mr. Mori. This technique is easy, simple, and does not require sophisticated equipment. The Harada-Mori technique is based on larvae tropism nature in the water to concentrate the larvae of hookworms and Strongyloides stercoralis. Since its first application in 1955, this technique has undergone several modifications. The Harada-Mori could complement the Kato-Katz technique for faeces examination in areas with low STH infection intensity.

Abstract

Healthcare workers (HCWs) embody the principles of hand hygiene and protective attire to support self- and patient safety, but the materials involved in this process are found to be offending agents. The incidence of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) among HCWs keeps increasing. This review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, investigate the outcome and clinical skin condition improvement with the implementation of primary preventive measures (PPM), specifically: barrier cream, emollient, moisturiser, gloves use, and education. All relevant literature about PPM against OCD among HCWs published between 1995 to 2020 was searched. The data search was performed using the PUBMED, Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect databases. There were 16 studies comprised of 8 randomised controlled trials (RCTs), 7 clinical trials, and one comparative study. The study results showed that using barrier cream, moisturiser or emollient, gloves, and education were effective tools in reducing the number of clinical symptoms in cases of OCD. There was no significant difference in the effect between barrier cream use and moisturiser or emollient. The gloves were advised to be used non-latex gloves or powder-free latex gloves. Education was also observed to improve preventive behaviour among workers. The use of barrier cream, emollient, moisturiser, and gloves is recommended to be educated to ascertain the proper use of preventive measures, increase knowledge and awareness, and promote positive preventive behaviour.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is included in 15 major causes of death in the United States. Primary prevention and prompt treatment of hypertension can prevent mortality. Previous research on salat revealed that prayer provides a feeling of relaxation and activates parasympathetic activation, affecting the cardiovascular system. Objective: This study aims to investigate the effect of salat on blood pressure (BP) and pulse in patients with stage one primary hypertension. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent pre- and post-test control group design. The sample was taken by purposive sampling method. Thirty-six outpatients with stage one primary hypertension who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. The data were analysed by the Friedman and Wilcoxon post-hoc follow-up tests. Results: The statistical analysis showed significant differences in systolic BP (SBP) at 5 minutes after salat, 10 minutes after salat, and 5 minutes vs 10 minutes after salat, both in the treatment and control groups. For the diastolic BP (DBP), a significant difference was found at 5 minutes after salat and 10 minutes after salat in the treatment group, as well as at 10 minutes after salat and 5 minutes after salat vs 10 minutes after salat in the control group. For the pulse variable, a significant difference was found at 5 minutes after salat and 10 minutes after salat in the treatment group, and 5 minutes after salat in the control group. Conclusion: There is a decrease in BP and pulse rate in patients with stage one hypertension after salat.

Abstract

Breast milk is the best food for babies aged 0-6 months and can be given until two years old with complementary food after the baby is 6 months old. Exclusive breastfeeding is a condition when a baby only receives breastmilk for six months. Exclusive breastfeeding is still a global problem because of the low coverage of exclusive breastfeeding. It can be optimized through social support, especially practical support. This scoping review aimed to map the literature, identify knowledge gaps, and review scientific evidence on practical support for breastfeeding mothers in achieving exclusive breastfeeding. The method of this review applied the Arksey and O'Malley’s framework. Four databases such as PubMed, Wiley Online Library, EBSCO, ScienceDirect and grey literature from google scholar were used to search relevant articles by using PEOS. The articles obtained were 1384 articles, and five articles matched the inclusion criteria. The critical appraisal for the five articles indicated four Grade A articles and one Grade B article. The research methods found in the articles were qualitative (60%), quantitative (20%) and mixed method (20%). In addition, three themes of the articles were found in this scoping review, namely the diverse forms of practical support, the benefits of practical support and the expected practical support. Practical support from husbands, families, health workers and communities is suggested for the mothers to achieve exclusive breastfeeding.
