Abstract

Backgrounds: Orthodontic tooth movement occurs as the result of mechanical force to teeth. Many cells are playing part to correspond the mechanical force, which one of them is osteocyte. Orthodontic force in pressure side induces osteocyte cell death. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has many benefits, which one of them increases NO, of which can prevents osteocyte apoptosis. Purpose: To determine the influences of 3x30 minutes with 5 minutes break, 2,4 ATA HBOT for 5 and 7 days to osteocyte numbers on pressure side during orthodontic tooth movement. Materials and Methods: This study used “post test only control group” design, 42 guinea pigs were divided into 4 groups. K(-) was a negative control group, K(+) was the orthodontic group, and K1 & K2 were groups that given both orthodontic and HBOT for 5 and 7 days. Osteocyte numbers were counted after HE preparation. Data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and LSD test. Result: Data showed a significant difference of osteocyte amounts between K(-) group and K(+) group and between K(+) with K1 and K2 groups. Conclusions: HBOT for 5 days as well as 7 days gives a significant influences for the increase of osteocyte numbers on pressure side during tooth movement in Cavia cobaya.

Abstract

Background: The osteoporosis risk can be detected through the width of cortical mandible and porosity which can be seen in panoramic radiography. One of measurement methods using panoramic radiography in assessing the quality of bone and observing symptom of resorption and osteoporosis by utilizing Mental Index. Mental Index is a method in counting the average width of cortex under foramen mentale because thin mandible might correlates with decreasing of bone density. Purpose: To compare the assessment result of the cortex thickness by using Mental Index on women patient based on age of group (aged 30-70) at RSGM FKG Hang Tuah University, Surabaya. Materials and Methods: In this research, panoramic radiography of women patients aged 30 to 70 were used with utilizing radiomorfometri Mental Index to assess the mandibular cortical thickness manually using adigital caliper (accuracy of 0,01mm). Result: Based on One Way ANOVA assessment, p=0.000 value was found in which it means that there was a significant difference from the result of cortical thickness assessment in age of groups using Mental Index based onpanoramic radiography of women patients aged 30-70 at RSGM FKG Hang Tuah University, Surabaya. Conclusion: The assessment of cortical thickness by using Mental Index on women patients who experienced a decrease bone density in the age of 56-70 years old and which is compared with previous three groups of age, 30-35 years old, 36-45 years old and 46-55 years old and out of 93 panoramic radiographies, 11 panoramic radiographies were detected osteoporosis or the percentage of osteoporosis occurance based on Mental Index was 12%.

Abstract

Background: Nylon thermoplastic is denture base materials are often used. Dentures cleansing immersion can reduce calculus accumulation and Candida albicans (C.albicans) attachment. Sodium bicarbonate 5% is commonly used but has flaws. Acanthus ilicifolius leaves can be alternative herbal ingredients for denture cleanser because it has potency as antifungal and antibacterial. Purpose: To compare the difference in the effectiveness of antiC.albicans between Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract and sodium bicarbonate 5% on nylon thermoplastic immersion. Materials and Methods: This study was true experimental laboratories with post test only control group design. The subjects in this study was a nylon thermoplastic soaked for 5 minutes and were divided into 5 groups: negative control group (DMSO 1%), positive control group (Sodium Bicarbonate 5%), and treatment groups (Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract 1% , 0.5%, 0.25%). 0.1 ml of Sabouraud broth that has been contaminated with C.albicans in the immersion nylon thermoplastic then cultured in media SDA and incubated for 24 hours. Colony counted by colony counter in CFU/mL. The datawas processed by one way ANOVA and followed by LSD test. Result: There were differences in the number of colonies of C.albicans significantly between treatment groups with the negative control extract 1% and 0.5% (P <0,05) there is no significant difference between the negative control group with treatment group 3 (P3) (P>0,05). Conclusion: There were differences in the effectiveness of anti-C.albicans of Acanthus ilicifolius leaf extract concentration of 1% and 0,5% with sodium bicarbonate 5% on nylon thermoplasticimmersion

Abstract

Background: Molecular weight is one of the chitosan characteristic that affects the effectiveness of application for wound healing in dental extraction. Chitosan could improve wound healing process because of its anti inflammation component and accelerateproliferation phase. Angiogenesis is one of the main component in proliferation phase because it can preserve cells function to accelerate wound healing process. Purpose: the aim of this experiment is to account blood vessels in wound healing of dental extraction using chitosan with different molecular weight. Materials and Methods: Thirty six male Rattus Norvegicus were divided into 3 groups. Group I (without chitosan), group II was given low molecular weight chitosan, group III was given high molecular weight chitosan. Rats were sacrificed on day 7 and on day 14 post extraction then they were examined by hystometri to see the change in blood vessels number. Result: Data were statistically analyzed with One Way ANOVA and LSD with degree of significant p<0,05 showed significant difference between high molecular weight chitosan group and low molecular weight chitosan group after 7 and 14 days observation. Conclusion: High molecular weight chitosan was found more effective to increase blood vessels amount at 7th day and decrease blood vessels amount that 14 day in wound healing of dental extraction process.

Abstract

Background: Immediate Denture is once of the Prosthodontics therapy to patients who will be take some tooth extraction in the anterior teeth or sseveral teeth, or even in the exostosis case. Patients who for some reason to have to anterior teeth removed, will experience the aesthetic and psychological disorders. Purpose: The immediate denture intended that the patient does not experience toothless due to tooth extractions and patients can immediately use the artificial tooth immediately without waiting for the healing process. Case: Complete denture will prepare and then it the same time some teeth are planned to be extraction on theworking cast will be remove by cutting it and the complete denture inserted immediately after the extraction teeth and alveolectomy on the patient. Case Management: Control on 3 days, 7 days, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks post-insertion to see the resorption process after tooth extraction, so it maybe need to be relining and rebasing the artificial teeth. 7-day control the healing process already looks better and so with the retention. At 4 weeks after insertion of control, the artificial denture become unstable and it need to be denture relining and rebasing process using a soft liner. At 8 weeks after insertion control, the alveolar ridge has been perfect healing process, and the dentures should be relining and rebasing re-use by self cure acrylic.

Abstract

Background: Oral candidiasis is an infection caused by Candida albicans. Candida infection can occur in patients with Diabetes Mellitus (DM) due to the high sugar content in the whole saliva and immunosuppresive condition of the patient. Purpose: to discuss case and treatment of acute erythematous candidiasis in patients with diabetes mellitus. Case: A 68 year old male came to RSAL dr. Ramelan Surabaya complaining of tendernes, burning and painful when eating and drinking in the left side of the tongue and. The tendernes was felt since about 8 months ago after the patient had a stroke. He had uncontrolled diabetic and hypertension.Three months later the patient felt the pain was getting worse with heartburn and pain. It was treated by given medication Nystatin drop and cefadroxil regularly until the drug ran out. During the first 2 months of treatment the tongue looked better but the pain and burning persisted. Shortly after,the tongue becomes dirty again. Case Management: Screening for diagnosis in this case include pathology anatomy examination by scrabbing the lesion, complete blood count(CBC) and blood sugar test. The result was positive hypae, normal CBC, and blood sugar level 324mg/dl. Patient was diagnosed acute erythematous candidiasis and treated with anti fungal systemic, mouthwash and topical antiseptic for oral case and reffered to interne specialist for diabetic condition. Patient was cured in 36 days. Conclusion: Controlling or eliminate predisposing factor in this case (DM) is very important in the management of acute therapy erythematous candidiasis. Comprehensive treatment for oral candidiasis in diabetic patient must include controlling predisposition factor and the right choose of anti fungal agent.

Abstract

Background: Acceleration of wound healing after tooth extraction is the most important. One of the tissue repair in wound healing is the reepithelialization. Chitosan is a biomaterial that can be used to accelerate reepithelialization in the wound healing process. Purpose: The aim of this study was to prove the differences between application of chitosan gel high molecular weight and low molecular weight to accelerate the reepithelialization in socket healing after tooth extraction. Material and Methods: The experiment was held the post test only control group design used 24 male wistar rats divided into 3 group. K1 group was control groupwhich was extracted without any treatment, K2 group was extracted and applicated by low molecular weight of chitosan gel, K3 group was extracted and applicated by high molecular weight of chitosan gel. After treatments on the 7 day, all groups of rats were euthanized and the epithelial mucosal thickness was measured under light microscope magnificant 100x. All of the data were analyzed by one way ANOVA and LSD test. Result: This study showed the epithelial thickness of the K2 and K3 groups was significantly higher than K1 group, but there were not significantly different between K2 and K3 group. Conclusion: The effectivity of high molecular and low molecular weight chitosan gel to accelerate reepithelialization in socket healing are similar.

Abstract

Background: Pluchea indica Less leaves is a species of plants that has several chemical properties. It consists of flavonoids, tanine, and essensial oil which had been reported as antibacterial agents. Streptococcus viridans is the most common bacteria found in infected root canal teeth, and the extract of Pluchea indica Less leaves could be potentially used as one of root canal sterilization dressing in root canal teeth. Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine antibacterial activity and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Pluchea indica Less leaves extract against Streptococcus viridans. Materials and Methods: The antibacterial testing of Pluchea indica Less leaves extract was performed using dilution method against Streptococcus viridans. The tube with concentration extract of 25% was showed no visible turbidity, while the tube with concentration extract of 12,5% was showedgrowth of Streptococcus viridans. We made range between concentration 12,5% until 25% to determine the Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of Pluchea indica Less leaves extract. The result of antibacterial activity of Pluchea indica Less leaves extract was determined by measure the growth of Streptococcus viridans using colony count. Result: The result showed that Pluchea indica Less leaves extract was able to inhibit the growth of Streptococcus viridans on concentration 12,5%-25%. The results of Anova statistical test (significant value <0,05) showed significant different among each concentration of Pluchea indica Less leaves extract. Conclusion: Pluchea indica Less leaves extract had antibacterial activity against Streptococcus viridans. Minimum Bactericidal Concentration of Pluchea indica Less leaves extract was performed in concentration 12,5%-25%, which was could kill more than 99% growth of Streptococcus viridans.

Abstract

Background: In dentistry, complication post-extraction, disease periodontal, prosthetic surgery, pathological conditions, and trauma can cause alveolar bone loss and even lead to tooth loss. The use of hydroxyapatite derived from blood cockle shells is osteokondiction. Omega-3 in sardine oil will stimulate the healing process of damaged bone with decreasing in the number of the osteoclasts. Purpose: The aimed of this study to determine the Effectivity of Grafting Combination Blood Cockle Shell and Sardine Fish Oil to Decrease in The Numberof Osteoclasts in The Process of Bone Repair Methods: Animals used in research, as many as24 male Wistar rats, which then divided into 4 groups, namely the control group and the treatment group. The control group subdivided into two groups, normal healing and human application's paste. In the treatment group, also divided into two groups, group with blood cockle shell application and combination of blood cockle shell and sardine oil. Osteoclasts viewed using HPA on the 7th day. Results: Decrease in The Number of Osteoclasts on K- group : 2.67±1,033, P1 : 2.33±0.09, K+ : 1.5±0.09, P2 : 0.83±0.54. Because the data not homogeneous then used test Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney. P1 with P2 have a difference significantly compared 0,048 , P2 with K- 0,026 (p<0,05). Conclusions: Combined administration of blood cockle shell (Anadara granosa) and sardine oil (Sardinella longiceps) significantly influence the amount of osteoclasts in the process of bone repair on the 7th day.

Abstract

Background: Bacterial mixed periodontopatogen dominated by gram negative. Eucheuma cottonii seaweed as one of the plant species have the antibacterial effect againts gram positive and gram negative bacteria.thus potentially developed as antibacterial agent in periodontal disease. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the inhibition effect of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed extract to the growth of mixed periodontopathogen bacteria concentration of 0,25%, 0,5%, 1% and 2%. Materials and Methods: Eucheuma cottonii seaweed extracted with 95% etanol by soxhlet method. Mixed periodontopathogen bacteria inoculated in BHI medium. Antibacterial effects of extracts of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed againts bacterial mixed periodontopathogen was tested by the diffusion method with the concentrations of 0,25%, 0,5%, 1%, 2%, aquadest and tetracycline, where each group consisted of 5 experiment unit. The effect of the inhibition observed by measuring the diameter of clear area on the disk using digital calipers stated in millimeters. Result: There were inhibition effect at each concentrations of treatment. The diameter zone were concentration of 0.25% (6.184), the concentration of 0.5% (6.356), the concentration of 1% (6.62), the concentration of 2% (7.148) and a positive control with tetracycline (39.336) Conclusion: Eucheuma cottonii seaweed extract has inhibition effect to the growth ofbacteria mixed periodontopatogen.
