Abstract

The leadership structure of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in The leadership structure of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) in Indonesia has traditionally been dominated by male religious authorities, leaving the role of women in institutional leadership relatively underexplored in academic discourse. Although previous studies have discussed gender issues in Islamic education, limited attention has been given to how female leaders shape managerial practices and institutional development within pesantren. This study addresses this gap by examining the characteristics, strategies, and institutional impacts of female leadership in pesantren management. This research employs a qualitative design based on a systematic literature review combined with case-based analysis of selected pesantren led by women. Data were collected from peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and institutional reports, and analysed using thematic analysis, including coding, categorisation, and interpretation of leadership patterns, decision-making processes, and management practices. The findings reveal that female leadership in pesantren is characterised by collaborative decision-making, participatory governance, and strong community engagement. Women leaders tend to adopt adaptive management strategies by integrating traditional Islamic values with contemporary educational practices. These approaches contribute to improving institutional governance, enhancing educational quality, and strengthening the sustainability of pesantren in responding to social and educational changes. This study contributes to the literature by providing a more nuanced understanding of how female leadership influences organisational transformation in Islamic educational institutions. It also offers a conceptual perspective on gender-inclusive leadership as a strategic factor in promoting innovation and sustainability in pesantren management while maintaining their religious identity.

Abstract

This community service study addresses the need to strengthen graduate quality in Islamic educational institutions facing contemporary challenges such as globalisation, cultural transformation, and moral development. The study aims to examine how integrating a networked curriculum model can support the development of graduate quality in State Tsanawiyah Madrasah (MTsN 2 Ciwaringin) and State Aliyah Madrasah (MAN 2 Ciwaringin) located in Babakan Ciwaringin, Cirebon. The research applies the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach, focusing on identifying and utilising existing institutional and community assets. The activities were conducted through mentoring, discussions, and collaborative sessions involving teachers as the main participants. Data were collected through observation, documentation, and discussion results, and were analysed descriptively to capture institutional processes and teacher engagement during the program. The findings indicate that both madrasahs demonstrate strong institutional assets, including qualified teachers, supportive learning environments, and connections with surrounding Islamic boarding schools. The integration of the networked curriculum model, implemented through participatory and collaborative processes, strengthens curriculum practices, teacher involvement, and institutional coordination. In addition, internal quality control mechanisms led by madrasah leadership were observed to support the implementation of curriculum integration. These findings are based on teacher participation, institutional processes, and descriptive evaluation rather than direct measurement of student outcomes. The study suggests that integrating a networked curriculum model through the ABCD approach provides a structured framework that supports the development of educational practices and graduate quality in madrasah contexts.

Abstract

Ethnoscience-based science education in Papua remains underdeveloped despite its potential to integrate indigenous knowledge into formal learning and improve students’ conceptual understanding. This systematic literature review aims to identify and analyze existing studies on ethnoscience-based science education in Papua. The study employed the PRISMA 2020 guidelines as the review protocol. The literature was systematically searched across DOAJ, Scopus, and national index databases. From 124 identified articles, only 8 met the predefined inclusion criteria and were selected for further analysis. The findings reveal that ethnoscience research in Papua remains limited, focusing predominantly on documenting indigenous science knowledge of the Malind tribe and on developing contextual teaching materials. The results also indicate that the ethnoscience approach is effective in improving students’ conceptual understanding while simultaneously supporting the preservation of local wisdom. However, significant research gaps remain, particularly in developing interactive learning media grounded in Papuan ethnoscience and in examining the long-term impact of such approaches on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Sleep deprivation is one of the crucial factors that contribute to the decline in adolescent academic achievement, but objective measurements of this condition are still limited. This study aims to analyze the relationship between physiological insomnia symptoms, executive function (working memory and inhibitory control), and student academic achievement. The method used is a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design, involving 200 students of Vocational High Schools (SMK) in North Kalimantan. Physiological insomnia symptoms were objectively measured using Computer-Based Facial Analysis via the Eye Aspect Ratio (EAR) and Mouth Aspect Ratio (MAR) indicators, while executive function was measured using the N-Back and Stroop tasks. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with 5,000 bootstrapping resamples. The results showed that physiological insomnia symptoms had a negative, significant effect on executive function (β = -0.45; p < 0.001), while executive function had a positive, significant effect on academic achievement (β = 0.56; p < 0.001). Mediation analysis showed that working memory and inhibitory control partially mediated the relationship between insomnia and academic achievement (indirect effect = -0.254). The conclusion of this study confirms that insomnia contributes to decreased academic achievement by degrading cognitive function. From the perspective of Islamic educational psychology, these findings reinforce the importance of maintaining sleep quality as part of efforts to maintain reason (hifz al-'aql), as well as encouraging the integration of sleep hygiene education in the school environment to improve students' cognitive readiness.

Abstract

As the demands of the modern workforce evolve, the capacity of vocational educators to innovate becomes increasingly critical. However, research on innovative work behavior (IWB) has predominantly focused on public or general education settings, leaving a gap in understanding how IWB manifests in private vocational schools, which often face more acute resource constraints and market pressures. This study examines teachers’ IWB at a private vocational high school in East Surabaya, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the study investigates how educators generate, promote, and implement innovative practices within the school context. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 12 participants, including school administrators and teachers across various vocational disciplines, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. Findings reveal that while educators demonstrate robust IWB use, their innovation is specifically triggered by "survival-driven" adaptations to industrial demands and rigid curriculum dynamics. Notably, the role of leadership proved dualistic: acting as both a primary motivator through professional autonomy and a potential barrier through bureaucratic oversight. These results contribute to the literature by providing a contextualized model of IWB in private vocational education, underscoring that institutional support must move beyond administrative compliance to foster a collaborative climate that sustains long-term innovation.

Abstract

This study addresses the growing challenges of religious radicalism and exclusivism in the public sphere by reconstructing the concept of wasathiyyah (moderation) within Islamic law and its application in education. Employing a qualitative literature review with a legal-normative approach, this research analyses classical and contemporary Islamic legal texts, including the Qur'an, Sunnah, fiqh principles, and Maqasid al-Shariah, using descriptive-analytical and content analysis methods. The findings reveal that Islamic law fundamentally upholds justice ('adl) and balance (i'tidal) as core pillars of moderation. Moderation is not a dilution of faith but a return to the essence of Sharia, rejecting both textualist extremism and liberal overreach. In educational contexts, moderation is applied through an inclusive curriculum, dialogic learning methods, and an institutional culture that fosters tolerance (tasamuh). This research suggests that integrating Islamic legal principles into pedagogy can reduce religion-based conflicts and foster sustainable social harmony. The study is limited to theoretical analysis and suggests future empirical research on implementing moderation models in diverse educational settings. The contribution lies in providing a theoretical framework for developing Islamic education that produces graduates who are intellectually and spiritually intelligent.

Abstract

The fragmentation between Islamic religious education, halal consumption behavior, and halal supply chain transparency creates a conceptual gap that hinders the development of a sustainable halal ecosystem in the digital era. This study aims to develop an integrative conceptual model that connects Islamic educational streams, digital transformation, internalization of Qur'anic values, halal awareness, halal consumption behavior, and perceptions of halal transparency within a cohesive theoretical framework. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) design based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol was applied, analyzing 78 final articles selected from 487 identified in Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and DOAJ. Data were analyzed through narrative synthesis, VOSviewer bibliometric mapping, and NVivo 14 thematic analysis. Results showed that digital contextual approaches in Islamic Religious Education yield stronger internalization of Qur'anic values (d = 0.61); 81.6% of studies confirmed that halal awareness positively influences purchasing decisions; and blockchain-based transparency increases consumer trust contingent on halal literacy rooted in Islamic education.

Abstract

This study investigates the development and implementation of an interactive Augmented Reality (AR)-based learning model for Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) oriented toward scientific literacy. The background highlights the challenges in students’ understanding of abstract concepts and the low scientific literacy levels resulting from the dominance of conventional, low-visualization learning methods. The objective of this study is to develop and evaluate an AR-based learning model that facilitates conceptual understanding and supports scientific literacy in junior high school students. A Research and Development (R&D) approach is employed using a modified Waterfall model comprising analysis, design, implementation, and testing stages. The study also applies an experimental procedure with three learning treatments: printed book-based learning, independent AR-based learning, and a combined approach integrating both methods. Data are collected through documentation of pre-test and post-test results and analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques. The findings reveal that the combined learning approach produces the most significant improvement in students’ learning outcomes, with the average score increasing from 50.1 in the pre-test to 80.4 in the post-test. The results indicate that integrating AR into a structured learning model enhances students’ understanding of abstract concepts and supports the development of scientific literacy. The study concludes that the proposed AR-based learning model provides a more interactive, concrete, and meaningful learning experience and can serve as an effective instructional strategy in IPAS learning at the junior high school level

Abstract

This study addresses the persistence of one-way instructional practices in early childhood education that limit the development of children’s critical thinking skills. It aims to describe the implementation of a deep learning pedagogical approach and its impact on critical thinking among children aged 5-6 years at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 26 Kindergarten, Malang. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving teachers, children, and the school principal. Data were analyzed using an interactive qualitative analysis technique, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that deep learning is implemented through meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning experiences, where teachers act as facilitators and children actively engage in exploration and play-based activities. The results show a noticeable improvement in children’s critical thinking, reflected in increased curiosity, a willingness to ask questions, the ability to provide simple, logical reasons, and growing independence in solving everyday problems. These outcomes suggest a positive shift in children’s thinking from passive reception to more reflective engagement. However, the study does not claim absolute effectiveness, as the results are context-specific and influenced by teacher readiness and learning environment. Overall, the deep learning approach (as a pedagogical model, not an AI-based approach) provides opportunities for children to construct knowledge through meaningful experiences.
