Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the tuition fee policy at Universitas Brawijaya, particularly in the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, by examining student perceptions and the social impacts of tuition fee changes. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and a case study design, the research was conducted at these two faculties, representing different academic cluster STEM and SSH. Informants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of eight active students who experienced significant tuition increases. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation of official university regulations, tuition data, and campus news reports. Data analysis employed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, and Fischer’s policy dynamics theory was used to interpret findings across five indicators: power and politics, knowledge and information, actor interaction, change and adaptation, and conflict of values and interests. Results show that tuition fees increased significantly after 2019, triggering greater economic disparity and dissatisfaction among students. Although faculties attempted to respond with measures like Crisis Centers and fee reductions, the study concludes that policy reform is needed particularly in communication, transparency, and student involvement to support a more equitable education financing system.

Abstract

Teaching Arabic to early grade students presents unique challenges, particularly in fostering motivation and building basic vocabulary. Learning media that combine elements of music and physical movement are considered promising in addressing these challenges, particularly in primary education, which emphasizes a multisensory approach. This study aims to systematically review the literature on the use of songs and movements as a medium for teaching Arabic in primary schools. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach was used, guided by the PRISMA protocol, with sources drawn from Sinta and Scopus indexed journals published between 2015 and 2025. This study systematically reviewed 35 empirical studies exploring the impact of songs and movements on teaching Arabic to early grade learners. Analysis of the 35 selected articles revealed that integrating songs and movements consistently increased student engagement, accelerated vocabulary acquisition, and strengthened memory retention through auditory and kinesthetic stimulation. The effectiveness of this approach was influenced by teacher involvement, availability of learning media, and alignment with student characteristics. Theoretically, this study strengthens the relevance of multisensory strategies in language teaching. Future research is recommended to test the effectiveness of this method through a more controlled experimental design.

Abstract

The phenomenon of radicalism among youth and students necessitates the development of an Islamic education curriculum that not only promotes the values of religious moderation but also cultivates Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). This study aims to identify the values of religious moderation found in hadith and analyze their relevance for designing a deradicalization-oriented curriculum integrated with HOTS. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach through library research, primary data were sourced from authentic hadith books such as Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and Sunan Abu Dawud, while secondary data were drawn from literature related to Islamic education, HOTS, and curriculum studies. Content analysis was used to extract moderation values, and thematic synthesis was applied to map these values onto HOTS indicators: analysis, evaluation, and creation. The findings highlight five key values from hadith—tolerance (tasamuh), justice, deliberation, non-violence, and respect for diversity—which can be systematically integrated into the curriculum to foster critical and inclusive thinking among students. The originality of this study lies in its theoretical model that bridges prophetic values and cognitive frameworks, a rarely explored intersection. A major limitation is the absence of empirical testing, and future research is recommended to implement and evaluate the proposed model in educational settings. In conclusion, integrating hadith values into HOTS-oriented curricula can play a transformative role in shaping moderate and high-thinking learners, and serve as a strategic response to the challenge of radicalism in education.

Abstract

ChatGPT has gained popularity in research writing and language teaching, yet its specific influence on students’ English learning processes remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate students’ experiences using ChatGPT in English language learning from two countries: the Philippines and Indonesia. Employing a qualitative research design, the study purposively collected the data from 90 university students—50 from University Technology in the Philippines and 40 from Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Surabaya (UNUSA), Indonesia. They completed questionnaires via Google Forms, using a five-point Likert scale (strongly agree to strongly disagree) to express their perceptions of ChatGPT’s role in their learning. In addition, interviews were conducted with four teachers (two from each institution) to deepen insights into classroom impacts. Findings reveal that ChatGPT significantly enhances students’ English learning by boosting creativity, encouraging critical thinking, improving engagement, and supporting knowledge retention. It also aids in time management, facilitates collaborative problem-solving, and optimizes learning resources. Teachers reported 13 distinct positive effects on student learning outcomes. Therefore, ChatGPT is a valuable educational tool that transforms traditional learning environments and better prepares students with essential 21st-century skills. It is recommended that ChatGPT be more widely integrated into English language instruction to maximize its benefits.

Abstract

Early childhood cognitive development is a critical foundation for future learning. However, many existing learning methods remain monotonous and less engaging, leading to low participation and slow cognitive progress among children. To address this, interactive and enjoyable learning media is essential. This study aims to improve early childhood cognitive development through the transformation of the traditional snakes and ladders game integrated with the Index Card Match (ICM) method. The game was selected for its ability to stimulate recognition of basic symbols—numbers, letters, colors, shapes, and sizes—which are key elements in early cognition. The research was conducted at Ceria Eduloka Kindergarten, Seberida District, using a participatory Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection in two cycles. The game was modified by adding ICM elements, where children match questions and answers during each move, promoting active thinking and engagement. Data were collected through observation, teacher interviews, and documentation. The results showed a significant increase in cognitive achievement, with average scores rising from 33% in the pre-cycle to 86% in the second cycle. This indicates that the modified game successfully fosters basic cognitive abilities such as recognition, understanding, and problem-solving. Theoretically, the study contributes to the application of constructivist learning and multimodal approaches in early childhood education. In the long term, this educational media has the potential to be replicated in various early childhood education settings as an inclusive, engaging, and culturally adaptive tool to support the development of cognitive and social-emotional competencies in young children.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of volleyball game modifications on students' learning motivation in physical education learning. The background of the research lies in the observation that conventional volleyball games often present challenges for students, such as difficulty in mastering techniques and limited involvement, which can reduce motivation. A quasi-experimental method with a pre-test-post-test control group design was used in this research. The sample consisted of 25 junior high school students divided into two groups: an experimental group that received learning through modified volleyball games and a control group that followed standard volleyball instruction. Data on learning motivation were collected through a validated questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed a significant increase in students' learning motivation in the experimental group compared to the control group. The modifications, including smaller courts, lighter balls, simplified rules, and fewer players, made the game more accessible and enjoyable, enhancing engagement and motivation. These findings suggest that volleyball game modifications (kasvol) effectively improve students' motivation in physical education learning.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low mathematical numeracy literacy skills of elementary school students, particularly in understanding the fractional values of currency. This condition is exacerbated by the limited use of instructional media and the application of unengaging learning models, which fail to promote active student involvement. The aim of this study is to develop the "MoniMoney" instructional media, combined with the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) model, to improve the mathematical numeracy literacy of second-grade elementary students. The study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method based on the Borg & Gall model. The research subjects consisted of 10 students for a limited trial and 22 students for a broader trial. Instruments included field notes, teacher interviews, validation sheets for media and content, as well as pretest and posttest assessments. Data were analyzed using N-Gain calculations and significance testing. The results showed that the MoniMoney instructional media was declared valid and feasible based on expert validation. Its use significantly improved students' mathematical numeracy literacy, with an average N-Gain score of 0.72 (high category). This study concludes that the MoniMoney instructional media, systematically developed and supported by the TGT model, is effective in improving students’ mathematical numeracy literacy. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of Monopoly-style educational media on the topic of fractional currency values with a fun cooperative learning approach, aligned with the characteristics of elementary school students. This media has the potential to serve as an innovative solution for meaningful and contextual numeracy learning.
