Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the level ofchemophobia among science students and their attitude towards chemistryand their relationship. 101 Form 4 and Form 5 respondents were involved.Instrument used in this study was questionnaires comprises of three sectionsnamely demographic background, level of chemophobia (chemistry learninganxiety, chemistry evaluation anxiety and chemicals handling anxiety) andattitude towards chemistry (enjoyment of learning chemistry, enjoyment ofconducting laboratory activities, importance of chemistry in life andbehavioral tendency to learn chemistry). Research findings showed thatchemophobia among science students was at moderate level whereasstudents’ attitude towards chemistry was at high level. Research findingsalso showed that there was a moderate, negative significant relationshipbetween the three factors of chemophobia with students’ attitude towardschemistry. Based on multiple regression analysis, there was a factor inchemophobia (chemistry evaluation anxiety) that showed significantinfluence with students’ attitude towards chemistry. This study implied thatchemophobia among students should be overcome so that positive attitudetowards chemistry could be instilled and hence, this would lead to theimprovement in academic achievement and student’s participation inchemistry and science-related field.

Abstract

Earth Physics is a course at the Physics Education Program Study,University of Riau, Indonesia. The problem facing by students were thestudent commonly not able to imagine the rotation effect and the tilt ofrotation axis to some phenomenon. Furthermore the students were difficultto imagine the subduction zone of two tectonic plates. This study wasdemonstrate some assignments to the student regarding the use Google Earthin the learning the earth physically. In this study, a total of 38 students werechosen to use the Google Earth as an interactive learning media. Todemonstrate the Google Earth in the learning process, several assignmentshave been given to the students. The first was to compare the distancemeasurement manually and through Google Earth. The seconddemonstration was to define some selected areas. The third was todemonstrate the tilt axis of rotation effect on the earth. The last was a miniproject to demonstrate the use of Google Earth in imagine of the subductionof two tectonic plates. The result shows that mostly students (92%) wereable to reconstruction the process involved in the assignment although a fewof them cannot explain well. Whilst, 8% of the student were still difficult toreconstruction the process involved in the assignment, although they cansubmit all the assignments with fairly well. Finally, the Google Earth isgenerally success used in the demonstration of earth physics subject learningmedia.

Abstract

This research is to know teacher's assessment on school readinessfor children of 5-6 year-old in State Kindergarten in Pekanbaru (motoricphysical, emotional social, moral, language, and cognitive aspects). Thepopulation in this research is all children after 5-6 years with total of 425children and 150 children was taken as the sample. The method used isquantitative descriptive method. Data collection technique used wasobservation sheet. SBased on the results of data analysis, it was obtained thatthe percentage of all 5 aspects of school readiness in children aged 5-6 yearsin kindergarten in Pekanbaru: the aspect of physical motor readinessobtained equal to 68.22% belonging to high category of motoric physicalreadiness and smooth child is said Developing As Expectation (BSH),emotional social readiness aspect is obtained equal to 62.47% belong to highcategory hence emotional social readiness of child is said Develop AsExpectation (BSH), moral readiness aspect is obtained as much as 63.21%belongs to high category so the moral readiness of children is saidDeveloped As Expectation (BSH), the aspect of language readiness is51.14% is enough category then the readiness of children language is said toStart Developing (MB) and the aspect of cognitive readiness obtained by49.08% is sufficient then the cognitive readiness of children is said Startdeveloping (MB).

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of achievementmotivation through the role of soft skills to the learning achievement. Thisresearch was conducted due to the low achievement motivation of students atEconomic Education Program Study, University of Riau. A total of 185samples were selected from 344 number of population using Yamanestatistical sampling technique. Data was collected by questionnaire anddocumentation techniques. It was then analyzed using path analysis. Theresults showed that Soft Skill played a positive role mediate that influence ofaccomplishment motivation on learning achievement. This means thatlearning achievement is not influenced by achievement motivation alone, butalso supported by soft skill as intervening variable. In order to achieveachievement motivation students should have a successful future orientedattitude. Meanwhile, to improve soft skill students must have the ability tocommunicate, adapt and build relationships obtained from the ability of ICTand foreign languages.

Abstract

Science learning outcomes such as science process skills andattitudes toward science are still important issues in science education. Inthis study the researchers tried to get a picture of the students' learningoutcomes to get input on the learning process of science in the coastal area.As an initial study of the development of maritime-based contextual sciencelearning media, the purpose of this research is to know the extent of scienceprocess skill level, attitude toward science, and academic achievement ofstudents in coastal area. There were 114 students of the 8th grade of fourlower secondary schools in Merbau Island participated as respondents in thisstudy. Instruments used in data collection are science process skills tests andattitude toward science questionnaires for lower secondary school students.The results showed that 8th grade lower secondary school students inMerbau Island had high attitude toward science. On the contrary, the scienceprocess skills and academic achievement of their science are relatively low.

Abstract

Current environmental problems have become a serious threat to human life. One way to reduce this threat is to change the  paradigm  of  the  younger  generation  through education. Environmental Education (PLH) is the right step to implement, especially in Adiwiyata schools. This study aims to analyze students environmental care attitudes by learning  monolithic  and  integrated  environmental education. This research was conducted in 4 adiwiyata high schools. The method used is a survey. The total sample was307 students. The technique used through the questionnaire environmental attitudes of students. Data analysis was performed by t-test. The t-test results showed that therewere differences in students' environmental care attitudes between monolithic learning and integration. Differences in attitudes to care for the environment are found in 3 indicators namely, attitudes towards energy, attitudes towards flora and fauna and attitudes towards the social and human environment. Analysis of environmental care attitudes category found that monolithic PLH learning was1.24%  in  the  excellent  category,  98.76  in  the  goodcategory.  While  PLH  integration  is  1.39%  very  good,93.10% is good and 5.51% is low. It was concluded that students with monolithic PLH learning had environmental care attitudes that were better than students' attitudes withPLH integration learning.

Abstract

In the education context, the majority of studies on studentintentions (school selection, retention and dropout) focused on theinternal affecting factors (e.g., sex, family background, schoolperformance and satisfaction). Those on the external determinants (e.g.,school image) seem to be too thin, although these factors can be moreeasily and effectively regulated by education institutions. School image,however, does not stay unchanged but revolves over time. Nevertheless,the instability of school image has not been examined by previousresearch. Based on these understandings, this study aims to examine thechange of a school department’s images with the input of rap music as animage change agent. In addition, it investigates the correlation betweendepartment images and student intentions. Using the quantitative datacollected from 96 students in three low-grade classes (1-3) in a juniortechnology college in the Tohoku region of Japan, this study found thatthe impacts that a piece of rap music can produce is marginally limited,and the images of the department are decaying. In addition, the studyfigured out that department images are significant to the formation ofstudents’ intentions to go to the advanced course and to recommend thedepartment, but don’t have any significant effect on students’ intention tofinish their five-year study. Some implications for the management ofeducation activities to retain and recruit students are proposed based onthese outcomes.

Abstract

This study aimed at (1) finding the types of reference as cohesive device in essays written by the fourth semester students of the English study program Universitas Riau, and  (2)  calculating  the  frequency  of  reference  used  in essays  written  by  the  fourth  semester  students  of  the English  study program  Universitas Riau. Documentation such as written texts was the main technique of collecting the required data. The data were analyzed by using theories from Halliday and Hassan (2013) about references as cohesive devices in the essays written by the students and by giving the percentage on the use of references. The research findings showed that all the types of reference as cohesive devices were used in the essays written by the fourth semester students with the total number of 954 devices. The most frequent reference cohesive devices used by  the  fourth  semester  students  of  the  English  study program Universitas Riau was personal reference with the percentage of 53.3% followed by demonstrative reference with the percentage of 45.8% and comparative reference with the percentage 0.9%. It could be concluded that Personal reference was the most frequently used because it may refer not only to a particular person or object, but also to any identifiable person.

Abstract

In order to implement communicative learning activities, ateacher must be able to design various means or media so that learningprocess keeps running well. A teacher is expected not to stutter indesigning media for various learning needs. The main purpose of thisstudy is to examine the strategies done by teachers in designing media toimplement communicative learning. This research is a descriptiveresearch in which the data were collected from teachers of MadrasahAliyah Negeri (public Islamic senior high schools) in Pekanbaru city. Theresearch sample was 36 teachers. The instrument used to collect the datawas a scale questionnaire. The data were descriptively analyzed. Eachitem of the questionnaire becomes the basis and the principal of theresearch analysis. The research findings reveal that to implementcommunicative learning, the teachers designed learning media. Thestrategies they used are making use of e-learning and making use ofvarious teaching and learning facilities, creating student worksheets andcompiling teaching materials, and presenting slides or other media inaccordance with the teaching materials. Each of the strategy is set at avery high standard. The teachers’ strategy to design media at the publicschools runs well. It can be seen from the average of the strategy that is4.48 and the average belongs to very high category. The data also clearlyreveal that the teachers are creative and innovative in designing media toimplement communicative learning.

Abstract

The development of Information and CommunicationTechnology (ICT) has a very big influence on education. With theenactment of the 2013 Curriculum, a technology-based curriculum,teachers as learning agents must continue to equip themselves withknowledge related to ICT. This descriptive study aims to describe andanalyze self-efficacy and attitudes of the teachers of SMAN KuansingDistrict towards the utilization of ICT in learning activities. Obstaclesfaced by the teachers in utilizing ICT and the efforts that have been doneto overcome the obstacles are also discussed. The research data wascollected in August 2018. By using stratified random sampling technique,55 teachers were determined as the sample. The instrument used was aquestionnaire. Then, the questionnaire was analyzed through descriptivestatistics to obtain frequencies and percentages. Finally, it can beconcluded that the average score of self-efficacy of the teachers ofSMAN in Kuansing District in utilizing ICT is 80.6% and the averagescore of their attitudes is 92.8%. It means that their self-efficacy andattitude are in very good levels. Although there are many obstacles facedby teachers in terms of facilities, infrastructure and human resources, theteachers have their own strategies to solve those obstacle.
