Abstract

Numerical literacy ability is currently most highly discussed in education. Numerical literacy ability is the ability that forms the basis for students in solving mathematical problems and is one of the indicators for the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM). This study analyzes numeracy literacy skills regarding self-efficacy in junior high school students. The research method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data was taken using a questionnaire and an essay test instrument. The subjects in the study were students who represented the category of self-efficacy, namely students with low, medium, and high abilities. The results showed that students in the high self-efficacy category met four indicators of numeracy literacy skills, namely, the problem understanding process, the problem modeling process, the process of using concepts in solving problems, and the process of interpreting and evaluating problems. Students with moderate self-efficacy fulfill three indicators of numeracy literacy skills: problem understanding, problem modeling, and the process of using concepts in solving problems. Meanwhile, students with low self-efficacy fulfill one indicator of numeracy literacy ability, namely the process of understanding the problem. Therefore, the results of this study indicate that the better the students' self-efficacy, the better their numeracy literacy skills are.

Abstract

The focus of this research was to determine whether there were variations in the mathematics creative thinking abilities of students in class XI MIPA based on their level of self-regulated learning. A quantitative technique used in this research. This is an ex post facto research. This research included 159 students from MIPA class XI who completed a self-regulated learning questionnaire. The sample in this study was collected using the stratified random sampling approach, which was chosen based on high, moderate, and low levels of self-regulated learning. The sample for each level of self-regulated learning was determined using the sample-to-variable-ratio guidelines, which yielded up to 29 samples with a total of 87 students for each level. Data collection methods include self-regulated learning questionnaire and assessments of creative thinking abilities. The data analysis technique started with precondition tests, such as the normality test with the Kolmogorov-smirnov test and homogeneity test with the Barlett test, and then moved on to hypothesis testing with one-way ANOVA at a significance level of 5%, continued with post-ANOVA testing with the Scheffe test. Students with high self-regulated learning had higher creative thinking skills than students with moderate and low self-regulated learning, whereas students with moderate self-regulated learning had higher mathematical creative thinking skills than students with low self-regulated learning, according to the findings.

Abstract

Representations of mathematical concepts are very important in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Visual representations are used to present mathematical concepts to solve, explore or explain the concepts. The purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate mathematics education students' visual representations of multivariable functions using matching items tasks. The study was qualitative research conducted with 10 second-year undergraduate mathematics education students at a University in Zimbabwe. The students matched the functions of several variables which are represented in symbolic and graphic forms. The result showed that most of the students were able to match the functions with their graphical representations. However, most of the students had difficulties in communicating mathematical information and these difficulties emanate from language problems and conceptual understanding.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the ability of mathematical understanding in terms of Self-Regulated Learning. This is based on students who have not been able to independently identify, recognize, detail and arrange several questions that will arise in the problem. This research is a qualitative research with a descriptive approach, the subjects in this study were students of class X SMA Negeri in Jakarta. Based on the results of research that has been done, it is stated that students have three categories of Self-Regulated Learning, namely high, medium and low. Each question states an indicator of mathematical understanding ability, but only the high Self-Regulated Learning category fulfills all indicators of mathematical understanding ability. Because subjects with high Self-Regulated Learning category can understand all the questions that have been asked. Meanwhile, for students in the moderate Self-Regulated Learning category, they fulfill two indicators, namely; (1) students can define a concept in writing, (2) students can present a concept in a problem and turn it into another form of expression. For the low Self-Regulated Learning category, students do not meet two indicators of mathematical understanding ability, only meet one indicator, namely; can identify problems and determine the outcome of a problem.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze students' errors in solving social arithmetic problems using Newman's theory (NEA). The research method used is descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were 15 class VII students of SMPN 1 Bangun Purba. The data collection technique was carried out by a written test. The test instrument used is a matter-based test on the ability to solve mathematical problems on social arithmetic material. The instrument used is in the form of 4 questions in the form of descriptions that have been tested for their validity, reliability, discriminating power, and index of difficulty. The research was conducted in the even semester of the 2021/2022 school year. The results of the study showed that the most frequent errors made by students were errors in concluding the final answer (encoding error). This happens when students do not make conclusions even though they have received answers. Based on data analysis, the percentage of reading errors was 12.00%, understanding errors were 19.33%, transformation errors were 23.33%, process skill errors were 18.67%, and final answer errors were 26.67%. The causes of errors that occur include students not being able to use the right formula in solving problems, careless in doing calculations and students not making conclusions at the end of the answer.

Abstract

Cognitive ability is one of the mathematics learning outcomes. Low cognitive ability affects student learning outcomes, and teachers must overcome these problems. This study aimed to see the variation in the improvement of mathematics learning outcomes between students who used the flipped classroom model and those who did not. This study applied a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design and a non-equivalent (pre-test and post-test) control group design. The population is Year 8 students at one of the public junior high schools in Aceh, Indonesia. By simple random sampling, the samples selected were one experimental class and one control class. The research instrument involves the pythagorean theorem test, while the instruments include lesson plans, student worksheets, and learning videos. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test. The data analysis was carried out by t-test to observe the difference in improving students' mathematics learning outcomes in the two classes. The results show that 1) the increase in students' mathematics learning outcomes was better when using the flipped classroom model than those without the model; 2) the increase in learning outcomes of the experimental class was in the high category while it was in the medium category for the control class.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the high school mathematics teachers' conceptions of creative thinking. The research approach used is descriptive qualitative. The subject in this study was a high school mathematics teacher in Yogyakarta. This study uses the results of an open questionnaire as the main data and interviews as supporting data. The results of the study show that the mathematics teachers' conceptions of creative thinking are limited to ways of thinking/solving a problem by using new steps or ideas so as to find/produce something new/different from usual. Creative mathematics teachers are described as being able to come up with new ideas, being able to make new innovations in learning. The teacher plays an active role in guiding students to be able to think creatively by giving questions or assignments that trigger mathematics in the form of descriptions (open questions) so that students can explore their abilities to trigger their creative thinking. The teacher assesses the ability to think creatively by giving open questions/trigger assignments and then analyzing the steps/results of the work to find new steps/ideas in the process.
