Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in infants in Indonesia. One contributing factor to the incidence of diarrhea is the improper preparation of formula milk that does not adhere to hygiene and sanitation standards. Infants who do not receive exclusive breastfeeding are more susceptible to gastrointestinal infections, including diarrhea. This study aims to analyze the relationship between formula milk preparation and the incidence of diarrhea in infants aged 6-12 months at Lubuk Baja Public Health Center, Batam City. Methods: This study employed an analytical survey design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 40 mothers with infants aged 6-12 months who consume formula milk, selected using a total sampling method. Data were collected through questionnaires and maternal and child health (MCH) book records, then analyzed using the chi-square test to determine the relationship between formula milk preparation and the incidence of diarrhea. Results: The study results indicated that most infants who experienced diarrhea were associated with poor formula milk preparation practices. The chi-square test showed a significant relationship between formula milk preparation and the incidence of diarrhea in infants (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Improper formula milk preparation that does not meet hygiene standards is associated with an increased risk of diarrhea in infants aged 6-12 months Keywords: Diarrhea, Formula Milk, Baby

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Low Back Pain (LBP) not only disrupts daily activities but can also negatively impact an individual's quality of life and productivity. Physiotherapy treatment has proven to be one of the effective non-pharmacological methods in managing LBP. Physiotherapy plays a role in increasing lumbar flexibility and reducing lower back pain. Various physiotherapy techniques can be applied, including TENS and Infrared. Methods: This study uses a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-post test approach. The sampling technique used is accidental sampling with 31 physiotherapy patients experiencing Low Back Pain at RSUD Kota Tanjungpinang. Data were collected using Schober test observation sheets and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Data analysis was performed with paired t-test statistics. Results: The study results showed that after physiotherapy was performed, limited lumbar flexibility drastically decreased to 6.5%, while patients with normal flexibility increased to 93.5%. There was a significant improvement in pain levels, with 64.5% of patients experiencing mild pain, 35.5% experiencing moderate pain, and no patients experiencing severe or very severe pain. The paired sample t-test result obtained a p-value of 0.000. Conclusion: Physiotherapy (TENS and Infrared) is effective in managing Low Back Pain cases viewed from lumbar flexibility at RSUD Kota Tanjungpinang. Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Vaginal discharge is a common condition experienced by young women and can be physiological or pathological. The main factor that contributes to the incidence of vaginal discharge is knowledge and vaginal hygiene behavior. This study aims to determine the relationship between the level of knowledge and vaginal hygiene behavior and the incidence of vaginal discharge in adolescent girls at SMA Kartini Batam. Methods: This research uses quantitative methods with a cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 129 female students selected using simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-Square test. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents had a good level of knowledge (94.6%) and good vaginal hygiene behavior (62%). Pathological vaginal discharge was found in 56.6% of respondents. Bivariate analysis showed that there was no significant relationship between knowledge and the incidence of vaginal discharge (p-value = 0.110). However, there is a significant relationship between vaginal hygiene behavior and the incidence of vaginal discharge (p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that although a good level of knowledge is not directly related to the incidence of vaginal discharge, poor vaginal hygiene behavior increases the risk of pathological vaginal discharge. Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Inguinal hernia is the most common type of hernia and is frequently encountered in the surgical department, particularly among males. Major risk factors suspected to contribute to inguinal hernia include age, body mass index (BMI), and types of occupation that increase intra-abdominal pressure. This study aims to determine the relationship between age, BMI, and occupation with the incidence of inguinal hernia at Budi Kemuliaan Hospital, Batam City. Methods: This research used a retrospective Case-Control study design based on medical records from 2022 to 2024. The sample consisted of 162 patients, comprising 81 patients with inguinal hernia (case group) and 81 patients with other types of hernia (control group). Data were analyzed using the Chi-Square test and Odds Ratio (OR) calculation. Results: The results showed a significant relationship between age (p=0.000) and occupation (p=0.000) with the incidence of inguinal hernia. However, there was no significant relationship between BMI and the incidence of inguinal hernia (p=0.432). Conclusion: Age and occupation are significantly associated with the incidence of inguinal hernia, while body mass index does not show a meaningful relationship. Keywords: Inguinal Hernia, Age, Body Mass Index, Occupation

Abstract

ABSTRACT Work stress is one of the factors that can affect workers’ physical health. This study aimed to determine the relationship between work stress levels and physical health disorders among employees of PT. X Batam. A cross-sectional design was applied with 42 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the DASS-30 questionnaire and observation, then analyzed using the chi-square test. The findings revealed that most respondents experienced physical health disorders, including cardiovascular disorders (76.2%), sleep disorders (81%), digestive problems (90.5%), musculoskeletal disorders (59.5%), and decreased immune function (88.1%). Statistical analysis indicated a significant association between work stress levels and all five types of physical health disorders (p < 0.05), with the strongest correlation observed in digestive problems. This study highlights the importance of workplace stress management as a preventive strategy to reduce physical health disorders and enhance employee well-being. Abstract

ABSTRACT Background: Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal surgical emergency, requiring rapid and accurate diagnosis to prevent serious complications. The Alvarado and RIPASA scores are widely used diagnostic tools, but they differ in characteristics and performance, particularly in Southeast Asian populations. This study sought to compare the Alvarado and RIPASA scores for diagnosing acute appendicitis at Hj. Bunda Halimah Hospital, Batam. Methods: This retrospective cross‑sectional analytic study included 125 patients with suspected acute appendicitis who underwent surgery at Hj. Bunda Halimah Hospital between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2024. Histopathology served as the gold standard. Diagnostic metrics were calculated for an Alvarado cut‑off  ≥ 7 and a RIPASA cut‑off  ≥ 8 Results: The Alvarado score showed a sensitivity of 87.7%, specificity of 63.6%, PPV of 96.1%, NPV of 33.3%, and accuracy of 85.6% with an AUC of 0.797. The RIPASA score has a higher sensitivity of 91.2% but lower specificity of 54.5%, PPV of 95.4%, NPV of 37.5%, accuracy of 88%, and an AUC of 0.847. The ROC comparison shows that the AUC value of RIPASA reflects better discriminatory ability in establishing the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Conclusion: The RIPASA score has been shown to be more sensitive and provide better discriminatory performance. Although the Alvarado score is more specific, the higher sensitivity and accuracy of RIPASA make it a superior alternative in the initial evaluation of appendicitis. Abstract

Background: Gastroschisis is an abdominal wall defect without a covering membrane, leaving intra-abdominal organs, particularly the intestines, exposed. Globally, the incidence varies, ranging from 0.22 to 7.91 per 10,000 live births. Objective: To determine the clinical associations of gastroschisis patients and identify risk factors that could potentially influence clinical outcomes at Dr. Zainoel Abidin Regional General Hospital, Banda Aceh. Methods: This retrospective observational study using medical records of patients with gastroschisis born between January 1, 2015, and December 31, 2018. Univariate and bivariate data analysis using the chi-square test with a P value <0.05. Results: In this study, the majority of patients were male (52.6%) with a birth weight ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 grams (63.2%). The most frequently performed intervention was primary closure (84.2%), predominantly conducted on day 0 of life (36.8%). A mild Apgar score was observed in 68.4% of the patients. There were statistically significant associations between survival duration and birth weight (p=0.016), type of surgical intervention (p=0.007), Apgar score (p=0.022), and timing of the intervention (p=0.000). Conclusion: Gastroschisis patients at this hospital are generally low-birth-weight boys born to young mothers. Factors such as birth weight, type of procedure, Apgar score, and age at procedure are associated with survival.
