Abstract

The problem of flooding is one of the important tasks that must be completed in the city of Medan. Flood disasters have the potential to cause casualties, so it is important to know the level of community readiness in dealing with flood disasters. This study aims to include the involvement of the community in flood-prone areas in the city of Medan and compare the readiness of each urban districts in dealing with floods. This has a long-term goal to minimize the negative impact of flooding in the city of Medan with a bottom-up approach. The research will use a quantitative approach, namely a questionnaire to 200 respondents consisting of households that are in flood-prone locations at several points in the city of Medan. The primary data obtained from the questionnaire will be analyzed and tested for face validity. The final result of the research is expected to be able to project the level of community readiness in the city of Medan in dealing with floods and become a reference for policy makers related to flood disaster management in the city of Medan. It can be concluded from the preliminary result that Aur Urban Village has the highest value in terms of level of preparedness in comparison to the other 9 urban villages. The informality of Aur Urban Village is argued to have a significant correlation with the high level of preparedness from the residents in Aur Urban Village. keywords: Flooding, community readiness, disaster management, preparedness, buttom-up approach.

Abstract

The development of the times and socio-cultural changes have had a significant impact on architecture, often eroding regional identity and cultural heritage that have been formed over centuries. This is evident in the revitalization of heritage areas, where regional design elements are less integrated, especially in contemporary practices. This study proposes a policy to implement regional architectural design and organize outdoor spaces in cultural heritage revitalization projects. Using architectural design methods, this study aims to create a "right" approach that combines historical monumentalism with contemporary aesthetics. Conceptual strategies such as contextual juxtaposition are used to enhance the design and character of the environment, with a focus on aesthetics and functionality. This approach aims to revitalize underutilized historic buildings by integrating new structures and materials, regenerating a sense of identity and value. This study provides a foundation for cultural and architectural policies in urban development, encompassing physical, economic, and social aspects while encouraging community involvement and ownership. Keywords: regional architecture, heritage revitalization, conceptual design, contextual juxtaposition, local identity.

Abstract

The evolutions of urban spaces has brought about diverse residential typologies which often end up as gated. This has implications for behavioural outcomes. The study examines the impact of gating characteristics on placed dependence in urban residential neighbourhoods. Qualitative survey method was used to collect primary data through the use of questionnaires and observation checklists. Nine neighbourhoods were identified within the study area with four (4) of them characterized as Single Family and five (5) multiple family house types. The study finds that gate (ing) was accorded greater priority and hence its prevalence regardless of house types. Nevertheless single family neighbourhoods have higher gating attributes than multiple family neighbourhoods. Also by comparative advantage place dependence is more pronounced in Single Family Neighbourhoods than the Multiple Family. Overall, the study finds that gating systems, speed bumps, security patrol gate house, and security signage are the significant predictors of place dependence in FESTAC. The findings therefore validates the increasing popularity of gating in the shaping of the urban residential environment and therefore needs to be considered as a critical facility that serves functional utility by urban planners and designers as a goal to improve place dependence attributes in urban residential environment.

Abstract

This paper describes the generation of steel frame space with multi-object optimization. Steel frame space motives from the stapler pins. A cluster of stapler pins has an infinite number of pins that can be a standard model module. These modules can adjoin with one another through the horizontal or vertical direction, parallel or cross direction. With every spin’s strength, they can support all structures and spaces, make more, complex spaces, and change their vision.

Abstract

Planner and settlement patterns have an impact on how communities behave and appear; these are brought on by a variety of factors that have an impact on us as humans and how we respond to our capitulating environment. The majority of us live in modern or typical settlement patterns where we have our own privacy, don't share our land with others, and have regular roads where we can park and move around freely while using our natural means of transportation. The concept of traditional Javanese houses is different from all of that because the latter prioritize effectiveness in the case of a faction war. This study aims to shed light on the settlement patterns in Kotagede communities and the significance of applying the spatial concepts of traditional Javanese homes. The primary documents used in this qualitative research, which is described in descriptive manner using any supporting illustrations or photos, were discovered through literature reviews of both books and journals. Understanding the settlement pattern and housing of the Javanese communities in Kotagede and how it affects behavior is the outcome of this study.

Abstract

This study explores a pedestrian arrangement model in the commercial corridor of Dr. Mansur Street, Medan City, which exhibits characteristics of urban sprawl through a strip development pattern. The research seeks to answer the question: How can pedestrian infrastructure be arranged to improve spatial connectivity, social interaction, and place identity in commercial areas affected by urban sprawl? The approach refers to visual, structural, and collective linkage theories to design connected pedestrian spaces that reflect the local character. The spatial arrangement focuses on forming a street space that functions like an urban square, highlighting local elements and everyday community activities to strengthen the identity of the area. In line with the Strategic Plan of Universitas Sumatera Utara, which promotes the value of local wisdom, this research contributes to the development of planning strategies based on local values. The results show that the Dr. Mansur corridor has strong potential to serve as a social space that supports community interaction and enhances the quality of the urban environment. The proposed design applies the principles of smart growth, which integrates social, cultural, environmental, and local wisdom aspects in a holistic way. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for city governments and policymakers in designing public spaces that are adaptive to urban change and support community-based development. Abstract

City dynamics must be seen as a complex system with varying degrees of non-linear interaction of space and time. Cities are not constantly growing. At some point it will shrink and may die. Many factors cause such as globalization, suburbanization, post-socialism, and changes in demographic structure and so on. In many studies, the shrinking city phenomenon is mostly carried out in developed countries. However, developing countries are not impossible to experience this phenomenon. Each city experiencing the shrinking city phenomenon has different characteristics. In developing countries, local government policies that depend on various aspects of central government policies have a level of vulnerability to shrinking city phenomenon. Changes in central government policy on the smal city have an impact on changes in the economic structure of the city. Moreover, limited resources and the absence of small city innovation make it increasingly difficult for cities to grow.

Abstract

Urban unplanned settlements have important function dan potential to be developed into a self-help-based urban eco-settlement. The quality of eco-settlement as sustainable settlements refers to friendly city with its equity, accessibility of the physical environment, and inclusiveness of the social environment. Using evaluation of physical environmental conditions, the objectives and expectations of the physical environments quality of the unplanned settlements in Kelurahan Petamburan Village could be identified whether it has referred to eco-settlement and the right strategy or not. Focus of this research is evaluating the variables from the physical environment of eco-settlement. The quantitative descriptive method is expected to be able to evaluate the unit variable conditions of the eco-settlement physical environment, including independent healthy houses, pedestrian ways, waste networks, and natural disaster and fire mitigation response. Ten (10) Neighborhood Units (RT) with 30 respondents are research samples selected at random, representing high, medium, and low density RT Units. Data and information obtain from field observation and interview are processed using The Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) Program. The results of the study, shows that factors related to the characteristics of unplanned settlements are in line with the criteria for eco-settlement requirements, in the sense of the social aspect, that is institutionalized voluntary self-help-communities or community participatory. This social aspect can be developed to increase further improvement or development of the physical environment.

Abstract

The study discusses the relationship between the environmental capacity of the road in terms of the impact of noise and air pollution caused by vehicles traveling on the road around the school area, namely T. Panglima Nyak Makam in Banda Aceh. Level of noise and air pollution is greatly influenced by the geometric of the road, the volume and, the speed of the vehicle. Traffic volume average of 486.8 pcu/hour/direction and an average speed of 33.19 km/hour. Capacity of this road is 1455.3 pcu/hour. From the research results obtained Leq values ranged from 72.8 dB (A) - 78.2 dB (A), with an average value of 76.00 dB (A). This Leq value indicates a noise level that has an impact on the community that is greater than 70 dB (A), and is still within the maximum noise threshold of 85 dB (A) and has passed the noise standard in the school area of 55 dB (A), then This road section is no longer feasible for school areas if assessed from the noise that occurs, for CO pollutants (LV) 1,301 ppm, CO (HV) 0.016 ppm, NOX 0.096 ppm, and HC 0.063 ppm. This shows that is still feasible because the DS limit for urban roads is 0.85 and classified as this road is still able to accommodate the traffic volume with the estimated air pollution provided.
