Abstract

This study explores the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enhanced teaching materials for improving university students' writing skills at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). In response to the ongoing digital transformation in higher education, AI-based tools such as Grammarly, ChatGPT, and Write & Improve have been increasingly utilized in writing instruction. The study employs a qualitative descriptive design and gathers data through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with three English lecturers, and reflective journals from twenty students in the English Education Department. The findings reveal that AI tools significantly enhance students' engagement, critical thinking, and awareness of writing mechanics. However, several challenges remain, including over-reliance on AI, gaps in digital literacy, and insufficient teacher training. The study proposes a localized model for AI-integrated material development grounded in Tomlinson's (2011) materials development framework and the TPACK model (Mishra & Koehler, 2006). It concludes that thoughtful integration of AI can enrich the process writing approach and promote learner autonomy when pedagogical principles remain central to instructional design.

Abstract

The "native speaker" ideal has long dominated English language teaching, reinforcing hierarchies of linguistic legitimacy and authority. Yet, as education in Indonesia rapidly shifts toward digital platforms, the urgency to reexamine this ideology becomes critical. In a post-pandemic context where online English learning has redefined interaction, identity, and pedagogy, this study deconstructs the persistence of the native-speaker norm in Indonesian digital classrooms through a postmodern narrative inquiry at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). Drawing on Derrida's deconstruction and Lyotard's critique of metanarratives, it interrogates how teachers and students narrate their identities, anxieties, and negotiations within virtual learning environments. Findings reveal that native-speakerism is both reproduced and destabilized in digital classrooms. Online interaction dissolves the rigid binary between native and non-native English users, highlighting fluid, hybrid, and localized Englishes. Participants negotiate authority, identity, and legitimacy in ways that challenge traditional linguistic hierarchies. The study contributes at multiple levels: theoretically, by extending postmodern thought into digital ELT; pedagogically, by advocating for decolonized and inclusive practices; and socially, by positioning Indonesian classrooms as spaces of epistemic resistance where meaning and identity remain dynamic and unfinished.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze in depth the role of Science Teacher Leadership (KPG) in efforts to improve student learning motivation at Muhammadiyah Junior High School. The background of this study is driven by the urgency of improving the quality of science learning, which is often considered difficult and abstract, as well as the importance of the role of teachers as instructional leaders in overcoming low student learning motivation. The approach used in this study is qualitative with a single case study. The location of the study is Muhammadiyah Special Program Junior High School Delanggu, with research subjects including 2-3 science teachers, 6-10 selected students, and the Deputy Principal for Curriculum as key informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-active participant observation during the learning process in the classroom, and documentation analysis (lesson plans, student scores). The data analysis technique used the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, with data validity checked through source and technique triangulation. The results showed that the learning leadership of science teachers at Muhammadiyah Junior High School played a significant and effective role in catalyzing student learning motivation, especially intrinsic motivation. This role was manifested through three main dimensions: (1) Defining a Relevant Learning Mission, in which teachers integrated science concepts with spiritual values and real life, providing deep meaning that triggered intrinsic motivation; (2) Managing Practice-Based Learning Programs, through the consistent use of experimental and demonstration methods, which successfully meet students' basic psychological needs for competence and autonomy; and (3) Creating a Positive and Supportive Learning Climate, which ensures that students feel safe to interact and make mistakes, thereby fulfilling their need for relatedness. The impact of KPG is clearly seen in changes in students' perceptions of science and increased active participation in class. The study concludes that the effectiveness of KPG lies in its ability to adapt to the institutional context and focus on meeting students' psychological needs. The practical implications of this study emphasize the importance of strengthening teacher training in experience-based instructional design and differentiated feedback techniques.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores how special education teachers (SLB) in Surakarta negotiate humanistic and personalized pedagogical approaches within increasingly standardized educational systems. Drawing on critical pedagogy theory and inclusive education frameworks, this research examines the tensions between transformative, student-centered pedagogical ideals (such as those popularized in cultural narratives like Freedom Writers) and the structural, administrative, and resource constraints faced by SLB teachers working with students with diverse disabilities. Through semi-structured interviews with five special education teachers from public SLB institutions in Surakarta, this study investigates how educators conceptualize authentic connection, individualized attention, and transformative learning for students with intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities who often face compounded marginalization due to poverty and social stigma. The findings reveal significant gaps between pedagogical ideals and practical realities, including excessive administrative burdens, inadequate funding for adaptive materials, high student-teacher ratios, outcome-driven assessment pressures, and limited emotional support systems for teachers. This study argues that while humanistic education promises to transform marginalized students' lives, systemic barriers in Indonesian special education prevent teachers from fully realizing this vision. This research contributes to ongoing debates about inclusive education in developing contexts and offers implications for reimagining special education policy that prioritises teacher capacity, student dignity, and authentic learning over bureaucratic compliance.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of social media in shaping the learning behavior and social interactions of junior high school students. The phenomenon of high social media use among adolescents has prompted the need for an in-depth study of its influence on the learning process and social relations in schools. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study design, involving students and teachers of SMP Negeri 1 Kebakkramat as informants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and SaldaƱa model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that social media, particularly TikTok, WhatsApp, and Instagram, have become a routine part of students' lives. However, their utilization in learning remains low because students primarily use them for entertainment. The positive impact of social media is seen in easy access to information and accelerated communication, while the dominant negative impacts include distraction, decreased learning focus, and potential conflict in social interactions. The study also found that school policies regarding social media use are still advisory in nature and therefore unable to optimally direct students' digital behavior. This study confirms that social media plays a dual role as a learning and social space, but digital literacy and more systematic supervision are needed so that its use brings more benefits to students.

Abstract

This study has a purpose to analyze the influence of the application ofTotal Quality Management (TQM) in strengthening organizational culture in vocational education, with transformational leadership as a mod-erating variable. This study was motivated by the challenges faced by SMK Negeri 4 Klaten in developing a culture of caring, contributing, and collaborating to improve school performance and graduate readiness. Employing a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were accumulated from 307 respondents consisting of teachers, staff, and students through a structured questionnaire that measured Total Quality Manage-ment (TQM), organizational culture, also transformational leadership. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with AMOS was utilized to appraise the direct and moderating effects, preceded by validity and reliability testing utilizing Confirmatory Factor Analysis, Composite Reliability, also Average Variance Extracted. The results showed that the application of Total Quality Management (TQM) significantly and positively influ-enced organizational culture, and transformational leadership also unfolded a significant positive effect. Furthermore, transformational leadership strengthened the relationship between Total Quality Management (TQM) and organizational culture, confirming its moderating role in internalizing quality values throughout the school environment. This study adds to the treatise on quality management in education by integrating Total Quality Management (TQM) and transformational leadership in the realm of vocational schools. Practically, the findings offer recommendations for school leaders to enhance quality improvement efforts by strengthening leadership capacity and instilling a culture of caring, contribution, and collaboration. These concepts are valuable for policymakers in designing quality assurance strategies that combine managerial systems with leadership-driven cultural development.

Abstract

This study aims to describe peer supervision practices, teacher responses, and its contribution to enhancing teacher professionalism at SMP Negeri 1 Kebakkramat. A qualitative approach was employed, collecting data through questionnaires, interviews, and observations with 18 teachers. The findings show that peer supervision is conducted systematically through pre-supervision, implementation, and reflection stages. Teachers responded positively, felt free to share teaching practices, and experienced enhanced collaboration. The collaboration includes joint preparation of teaching materials, development of instructional media, and discussions on classroom management. Peer supervision significantly contributes to improving teacher professionalism, particularly in lesson planning, teaching methods, classroom management, and self-reflection. Challenges include limited time, administrative workload, and varying levels of commitment. Overall, peer supervision is an effective strategy for fostering a culture of professionalism in schools.

Abstract

This study critically examines the implementation of character education in schools through the perspective of educational sociology with a critical perspective. Using a qualitative research design with a literature study approach, this study analyzes the mechanisms of symbolic violence, the reproduction of social inequality, and power relations in the practice of character education. The results of the study revealed that the implementation of character education operates as an arena of meaning contestation where the values of the dominant group are hegemonized through curriculum and school practices. The mechanism of symbolic violence works through habituation that reproduces the habitus of the dominant class, while the power relations between teachers, students, and institutions shape conformist subjectivity through disciplinary and normalization technologies. Structural challenges such as limited resources, lack of teacher training, and low parental participation indicate that the problem of character education is political-paradigmatic. This research offers an alternative perspective that emphasizes an emancipatory approach through critical awareness, reflective pedagogy, and a commitment to social justice to transform character education from an instrument of social reproduction into a medium of liberation.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore how the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in classroom instruction enhances learning motivation among junior high school students. Although previous studies have shown that AI can support adaptive and engaging learning, most research has focused on higher education or fully online settings. Empirical evidence describing how AI influences student motivation in face-to-face junior high school classrooms in Indonesia remains limited. This study addresses that gap by examining students' and teachers' experiences using AI tools such as educational chatbots, learning analytics applications, and adaptive learning platforms.Methodology: A descriptive qualitative design was employed. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation analysis. Participants included students, teachers, and school administrators involved in AI-supported learning activities. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns related to students' motivational changes and their interaction with AI tools during the learning process.Results: The findings show that AI integration enhances learning motivation in three key ways: (1) improving students' attention and interest through interactive and adaptive content; (2) increasing students' confidence via instant feedback and personalized guidance provided by AI systems; and (3) encouraging higher engagement through AI-based activities such as automated quizzes and digital simulations. Despite these benefits, challenges were also identified, including teacher readiness, limited availability of digital devices, and varied levels of students' digital literacy.Applications/Originality/Value: This study offers contextualized insights into how AI enhances learning motivation among junior high school students within Indonesian classrooms. It contributes to the limited body of qualitative research on AI in basic education, highlights practical considerations for effective AI integration, and provides valuable implications for future research on intelligent technologies in schools.

Abstract

The quality of graduates is a vital indicator of the success of educational institutions, especially for Private Junior High Schools (SMP) operating in a competitive environment that demands high accountability and comparative advantage. The role of School Principal Leadership is believed to be the main determining factor that mediates efforts to improve this quality. This research aims to empirically analyze and measure the influence of School Principal Leadership on the improvement of graduate quality in private SMPs, encompassing both academic and non-academic aspects. This study employed a quantitative approach with an ex-post facto survey design and sampled 30 accredited Private SMPs in the [Specify Study Area] region. Respondents consisted of 30 School Principals and 180 Teachers selected through the Simple Random Sampling technique from each sampled school. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire to measure the School Principal Leadership variable (Transformational and Instructional dimensions) and the Graduate Quality Improvement variable (teacher perception), supported by objective documentation data (exam scores and student acceptance into leading schools). Data analysis was performed using multiple linear regression tests after ensuring that the prerequisite analysis tests (Normality and Homoskedasticity) were met. School Principal Leadership, particularly through transformational practices focused on teacher motivation and empowerment, is a key determinant in achieving improved graduate quality in Private SMPs. Schools are advised to prioritize the development of transformational and instructional leadership capacity to ensure excellent graduates in both academics and character.
