Abstract

The phenomenon of Korean wave globalization is spreading South Korean culture worldwide. One of them is Indonesia, which entered through the broadcast of Korean dramas to attract attention from visuals, storylines, and interesting accompanying music called K-pop. Having great enthusiasm for K-pop gave rise to a group of fans of the K-pop boy band SEVENTEEN called CARAT. In providing support to SEVENTEEN, CARAT provides support by buying merchandise. K-pop fans' behavior shows their obsession or adoration towards their idols, often called celebrity worship. This type of research is qualitative research with phenomenological methods and an interpretive paradigm approach. Data collection techniques use interviews, documentation, and observation and analyze data through four activities: data collection, data reduction, data display, verification, and conclusion making. The results of this study indicate that the formation of celebrity worship behavior in fans refers to each component stage in celebrity worship, namely Entertainment-social, Intense-personal, and Borderline-pathological, with fantasy behavior that is not excessive. SEVENTEEN fans experience changes in lifestyle by paying more attention to personal appearance, changing mindsets, and strengthening social relationships.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence has become a significant factor in every aspect of life, including health, education, and being a life partner for people. Researchers wanted to know how humans and artificial intelligence interacted, particularly in intimate relationships. This discovery raises the topic of how to best depict the closeness between humans and artificially intelligent machines. This study uses the qualitative method and the interpretive critical paradigm to investigate the behaviors and attitudes of a cultural group. This research uses Vetere’s intimacy theory as a concept Hall’s representation analysis and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis that explore denotation and connotation. Data validity is ensured through triangulation analysis, which merges data from various sources for comparison. Self-disclosure involves personal information sharing, trust is built through non-verbal interactions, and commitment is shown through long-term actions such as gift-giving, gratitude, extending an invitation for a holiday, sexual activities, reassurances, providing assistance, and attention to detail. In conclusion, AI can develop further, one of which is developing emotions to establish closer relationships with humans. This can be proven by several results that have been mentioned. Future studies should investigate how feelings of love or emotion may be programmed into robots or artificial intelligence to create romantic relationships with humans.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to explain the commodification of Islam in the advertisement of Wardah cosmetic products through Judith Williamson's semiotic analysis. Advertising as a communicative medium aims to influence consumers by constructing the dominant discourse in Muslim society. One of them is seen in Wardah's beauty product advertisement by building Islamic discourse. This qualitative research uses the advertising semiotics method which examines the relation between signifier and signified in an object. The researcher analyzed the scenes in five Wardah advertisements. The results show that "Wardah TV commercial" embeds Islamic discourse through the concept of "halal'' cosmetics through text and audio-visual components. This Islamic discourse was built through language and then commodified as a product with a "halal" label attached to Wardah's commodities, namely using natural alcohol, not being contaminated with prohibited materials, and the production process in accordance with Islamic procedures. Furthermore, Wardah's advertisement featured multi-talented artists Dewi Sandra and Natasha Rizki, who were known as hijrah models, singers, and film actresses. Thus, Wardah succeeded in "borrowing" the meaning of popularity, Muslim youth, and achievement so that the product obtains a significant meaning based on the artist's reference system. The decommodification process looks at the ideology that is hidden and played by industrial interests in the segment of Muslim society in Indonesia.

Abstract

Film is a medium that describes the relationship between "Western" and "Eastern" cultures. This study aims to examine the discourse of postcolonialism in the movie Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) from the perspective of Homi K. Bhabha regarding mimicry, hybridity and liminality. This qualitative research uses a content analysis method. As a result, the film Avatar displays a film plot that positions the people of Navi as an "eastern" group colonized by military forces from the "West". The characters in the film, namely Jake Sully and his family, are not trapped in the dichotomy between the colonizers and the colonized, but form and create a hybrid identity between humans and sailors. Thus the relationship between the characters in the movie Avatar is in the "space between" which is growing. a reading of postcolonialism in film.

Abstract

Verbal sexual harassment (catcalling) is a type of symbolic sexual harassment that is still normalized or tolerated among the public or students. The public, especially students, still do not recognize catcalling as verbal sexual harassment, let alone those who encourage the perpetrators of verbal sexual harassment. Researchers obtain a problem formulation, namely. What are the factors that encourage perpetrators to carry out catcalling in the university environment? The aim of this research is to identify the factors behind catcalling on campus. The subjects of this research are divided into two, namely. informants as perpetrators and informants as victims. This research was structured based on qualitative methods with the aim of understanding a phenomenon that occurred in depth using a phenomenological approach and using the theory of Pierre Bourdieu and Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication. The aim of this approach is that researchers want to understand more about the experiences, perceptions, behavior, actions and motivations of informants. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews and supporting documentation. The results of research in the field are from analysis of arena, habitus, power and capital as well as verbal and non-verbal messages resulting in field findings that the symbolic meaning of each informant does not just happen, there are similarities and differences according to the experience of each informant. Differences in communication methods, backgrounds, arenas and habitus are also factors that encourage verbal sexual harassment to occur in the university environment. The impact felt by each informant regarding catcalling included the positive impact felt by the informant as the perpetrator of catcalling, no impact whatsoever for some informants and the negative impact experienced by the informant as a victim of catcalling.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to explain some of the problems of hate speech carried out on social media; the author also tries to explain some recommendations that can potentially overcome hate speech carried out on social media. The data collection in this article was conducted through a literature study, and the result was that the current phenomenon is that social media users are more willing to express opinions or comment on other people who are not even known personally. The death of Sulli, a Korean idol, in October 2019 due to depression due to continuously receiving hate speech messages on her social media account became the most shocking case. In Indonesia, hate speech cases are dominated by defamation, harassment, slander, provocation, and threats against individuals and groups. There are at least four recommended solutions to this problem; the first is related to government regulations. Secondly, it is necessary to hold socialization, whether carried out by Digital Literacy activists, academics, or anyone who can influence the surrounding environment; socialization is not only carried out directly but is carried out on social media in the form of disseminating content. Third, the features of social media should be maximized because, currently, various types of social media have provided features to reduce negative comments, such as comment filters, spam reports, and several other features. And the last one is related to the ethics of interpersonal communication on social media.
