Abstract

This study is motivated by the need for a more in-depth examination of the changes that occur in the process of adapting literary works into film, with a specific focus on the adaptation of the novel A: Aku, Benci dan Cinta by Wulanfadi (print edition 2015) into the film A: Aku, Benci dan Cinta directed by Rizki Balki (released 2017). The study aims to analyze the forms of change from novel to film using ecranisation theory, which comprises three main aspects—reduction, addition, and varied modification—applied to the elements of plot, character and characterization, and setting. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, with data consisting of textual sequences obtained through close reading of the novel and detailed observation of the film as the objects of analysis. The findings show that, for the reduction aspect, 74 instances were identified in the plot, 17 in characters and characterization, and 4 in setting; for the addition aspect, 13 instances were found in the plot, 5 in characters and characterization, and 2 in setting; and for the varied modification aspect, 21 instances were identified in the plot, 10 in characters and characterization, and 4 in setting. These results indicate that the ecranisation of A: Aku, Benci dan Cinta into film involves a fairly intensive strategy of reduction, addition, and variation, particularly in the plot element, thereby producing a narrative structure that is more compact and aligned with the demands of the cinematic medium. This study contributes to the growing body of research on ecranisation and provides an empirical basis for comparative analyses between literary works and their film adaptations.

Abstract

This study was motivated by low student learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education (PAI), which are associated with the use of conventional teaching methods that are less engaging and make minimal use of technology-based media. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using PowerPoint as an instructional medium in improving PAI learning outcomes among Grade VIII students at SMPN 4 Payakumbuh Subdistrict. A quantitative approach was employed using a one-group pretest–posttest experimental design involving 30 students as the sample. Data were collected through tests (pretest and posttest), questionnaires, and documentation, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Product Moment correlation. The results showed an increase in the average learning outcome score from 62.50 in the pretest to 78.16 in the posttest. The correlation test produced an r value of 0.402, which was higher than the r table value of 0.361 (p < 0.05), indicating that the use of PowerPoint media was effective in improving PAI learning outcomes. These findings underscore the importance of integrating multimedia technology into religious education to enhance student engagement, motivation, and learning achievement at the junior secondary school level.

Abstract

Oral literature lives and develops within traditional communities that are not yet oriented toward written culture, one manifestation of which is lullaby folk songs that function both to put children to sleep and to transmit cultural values. This study aims (1) to describe the structure of the lullaby folk song Senandung Mendindong Anak in the community of Kampung Padang Jorong Salido Barat, Lembah Melintang Subdistrict, Pasaman Barat Regency and (2) to describe the social functions of this folk song. The research employed a descriptive-analytical method by first describing the lullaby textually, then analyzing its physical and inner structures, and interpreting its social functions. The physical structure examined includes typography (lines and stanzas), diction, imagery (visual and kinesthetic), concrete words, figurative language, and versification (rhyme and rhythm), while the inner structure encompasses theme, emotion, tone, and message. The findings show that Senandung Mendindong Anak is characterized by a simple, repetitive, and rhythmic physical structure, with diction, imagery, and figurative language that reinforce an atmosphere of tenderness and emotional closeness between mother and child, and an inner structure centered on themes of affection, protection, and parents’ hopes for their children’s future. The social functions of this folk song are identified as a system for projecting parental feelings and aspirations, a medium of child education through the inculcation of moral and cultural values, and a recreational vehicle that creates a calming atmosphere within the family environment. These findings affirm that traditional lullabies function not only as entertainment, but also as media for preserving cultural values and identity in the life of the local community.

Abstract

Hate speech on social media is an increasingly widespread phenomenon in line with the expansion of freedom of expression in digital spaces, particularly targeting public figures who are under public scrutiny due to personal issues. However, studies that specifically analyze this phenomenon using a forensic linguistics approach in the context of Instagram comment sections remain limited. This study aims to examine indications of hate speech produced by netizens in the comment section of the Instagram account of actor Teuku Ryan by employing a forensic linguistics approach. The research used a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method, with data sources consisting of netizen comments on Teuku Ryan’s Instagram post published on 30 April 2024 and collected in May 2024. Data were obtained using observation and note-taking techniques, then analyzed based on the types of hate speech and the linguistic units through which they were expressed. The findings reveal 119 instances of hate speech divided into four types, namely insults, defamation, blasphemy, and incitement, with insulting expressions as the most dominant category. In terms of linguistic units, hate speech was most frequently realized in the form of sentences rather than words and phrases, indicating a tendency among netizens to express hate speech explicitly and directly. These findings affirm that a forensic linguistics approach is relevant and effective for identifying and analyzing hate speech objectively on the basis of linguistic evidence within legal and social contexts, and can serve as a reference for efforts to address and prevent hate speech offenses in digital spaces.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the forms of social criticism in the novel Belenggu by Armijn Pane, encompassing criticism of gender injustice, family disorganization, and cultural shift. It employed a descriptive qualitative approach in literary studies, with data consisting of linguistic units (words, phrases, clauses, and sentences) drawn from character dialogues and the narrator’s discourse that represent social criticism in the text. The researcher served as the main instrument through intensive reading, note-taking, and data classification. Data were collected through close reading, systematic note-taking, and the inventory of relevant quotations, while data validity was ensured using theoretical triangulation. Data analysis was conducted by grouping the findings according to the forms of social criticism and then interpreting them descriptively in line with the social context underlying the text. The results showed that the novel Belenggu contains criticism of a patriarchal structure that restricts women’s roles, fractures in family relationships caused by weak emotional communication, and the dominance of Western culture that displaces local cultural values. Overall, the novel reflects the dynamics of social change in Indonesian society during a transitional period toward modernity through its representation of gender conflict, family crisis, and cultural transformation.

Abstract

The development of children’s social interaction is a crucial aspect in shaping personality and social adaptability; however, studies that specifically integrate the role of parents, parenting patterns, and the quality of family communication within the context of modern social life remain relatively limited. This study aimed to analyze the influence of the parental role on the development of social interaction among elementary school–aged children. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed, involving 120 child–parent pairs selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability, complemented by brief observations of children’s social behavior in the school environment. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression. The results showed a positive and significant influence of the parental role on children’s social interaction, with a contribution of 31.7%. These findings reinforce the position of the family as the primary socialization environment in shaping children’s communication, cooperation, empathy, and social adaptation skills, and contribute to strengthening ecological developmental theory and parenting practices based on parental involvement. The practical implications highlight the importance of improving the quality of family communication and enhancing school–parent partnerships to sustainably support children’s social development.

Abstract

Employee performance is a strategic factor in the operational success of plantation companies, particularly in work units responsible for achieving production targets; however, studies that specifically examine the influence of leadership style and interpersonal communication on employee performance with work motivation as an intervening variable in the context of oil palm plantations, especially at PT. Agromuko Sei Betung Estate, remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the influence of leadership style and interpersonal communication on employee performance with work motivation as an intervening variable among employees of Division 1 at PT. Agromuko Sei Betung Estate. A quantitative approach with an explanatory survey design was employed, involving 96 respondents selected using a saturated sampling technique. Data were collected using a five-point Likert scale questionnaire, supported by observations and interviews to enrich the contextual understanding of the findings, and were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling based on Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) with SmartPLS software. The results showed that leadership style and interpersonal communication had a significant effect on work motivation, and that leadership style and work motivation had a significant effect on employee performance. Interpersonal communication did not have a significant direct effect on performance but had a significant indirect effect through work motivation, thereby reinforcing the role of work motivation as a mediating mechanism in enhancing employee performance. These findings indicate that strengthening effective leadership practices and a constructive internal communication culture constitutes an important strategy for companies to improve work motivation and employee performance in oil palm plantation units.

Abstract

Critical thinking skills are an essential competence that must be developed from the school years; however, synthesis studies that specifically examine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model supported by Socio-Scientific Issues (SSI) in developing these skills remain limited. This study aimed to examine the influence of PBL supported by SSI on students’ critical thinking skills through a literature review of 10 relevant articles obtained from Google Scholar using the keywords critical thinking, Problem Based Learning, and Socio-Scientific Issues. The method employed was a literature review by identifying, selecting, and analyzing research findings related to the implementation of PBL supported by SSI in the context of science learning. The review results indicate that PBL supported by SSI consistently contributes to improving students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in the aspects of analysis, evaluation, and decision-making. These findings strengthen the theoretical and empirical foundation for implementing PBL supported by SSI as an effective science learning strategy to develop students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

The analysis of mineral oxide content in sand plays an important role in determining the quality of raw materials for the chemical and construction materials industries, yet the application of conventional methods based on national standards remains relatively limited compared with the use of modern instruments. This study aimed to analyze the content of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), calcium oxide (CaO), and magnesium oxide (MgO) in sand using a gravimetric method in accordance with the SNI 2049:2015 procedure. A quantitative approach with a laboratory experimental design was employed, in which sand samples were analyzed through successive stages of dissolution, precipitate separation, ignition, titration, and weighing of the pure compound residues. Data were obtained from gravimetric and volumetric measurements and were analyzed quantitatively based on the stoichiometric relationships of the chemical reactions. The results showed that the SiO₂ content reached 84.0%, while CaO and MgO were 1.16% and 1.13%, respectively, indicating the dominance of silica in the sand composition with relatively low levels of basic oxides. These findings confirm that the gravimetric method based on the national standard is capable of producing accurate and consistent data for sand mineral characterization, thereby reinforcing the potential use of sand as a raw material for high-silica-based industries.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the need to improve employee performance in the public sector through organizational communication management and the strengthening of digital competence, particularly within the Dinas Pekerjaan Umum dan Penataan Ruang (PUPR) of Mukomuko Regency. The study aims to analyze the effects of organizational communication and digital competence on employee performance, with work motivation as an intervening variable. A quantitative approach was employed using a survey method involving 85 employees as respondents. Data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling based on Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to examine the direct and indirect relationships among the variables. The results show that organizational communication has a positive but not significant effect on work motivation, whereas digital competence has a positive and significant effect on work motivation. Organizational communication and digital competence both have positive and significant effects on employee performance, and work motivation also has a positive and significant effect on employee performance. The mediation test indicates that work motivation does not mediate the effect of organizational communication on employee performance but significantly mediates the effect of digital competence on employee performance. These findings indicate that strengthening digital competence is a key factor in fostering employee motivation and performance, while the quality and effectiveness of organizational communication still need to be improved to contribute more optimally to work motivation. This study provides practical implications as a basis for formulating human resource development policies grounded in digital transformation in the public sector.
