Abstract

This study aims to describe the perceptions of mathematics education students regarding the use of the Canva whiteboard and a conventional whiteboard in mathematics learning. This research is driven by the necessity to employ digital media in remote learning and limited classroom space, as well as the goal to evaluate the effectiveness of digital media compared to conventional methods. There were 29 participants, 13 males and 16 females, all from the 2nd, 4th and 6th semesters. The subjects were selected using a total sampling technique, involving all active students of the Mathematics Education Study Program at STKIP Tanjungpura in the even semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The quantitative descriptive approach with within-subjects design was used since all respondents participated in learning with both media. The instrument was a 15-item Likert scale questionnaire covering seven indicators: clarity of explanation, visualization of abstract concepts, focus and concentration, interaction and discussion, ease of note-taking, re-access of materials, and overall understanding. Analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. The findings indicated that Canva whiteboard was significantly superior in re-access materials as well as ease of note-taking, while the conventional whiteboard was significantly superior in interaction and discussion. Other indicators did not show significant differences. These findings suggest the implementation of a blended media approach, specifically combining Canva and conventional to strengthen visualization and accessibility.

Abstract

Mathematical errors refer to students’ inaccuracies in understanding, applying, or communicating mathematical concepts and procedures, which lead to answers that deviate from the expected results. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the types of errors made by Grade X students at SMK PGRI 4 Blitar in solving trigonometry problems, specifically on the topics of special angles, the sine rule, the cosine rule, and the area of a triangle. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method involving three students selected based on their levels of mathematical ability: high, medium, and low. Data were collected through written tests and interviews, and were analyzed using three categories of errors: conceptual, procedural, and communicative. The findings indicate that students made various types of errors—including conceptual, procedural, and communicative—committed by participants SP1, SP2, and SP3. These errors stemmed from a lack of understanding of basic concepts, incorrect problem-solving procedures, and difficulties in communicating mathematical ideas, including the representation and notation of mathematical symbols during the learning process. This study provides a clear picture of the challenges students face in understanding trigonometry and offers valuable insights for evaluating and improving mathematics teaching strategies at the vocational high school level.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low mathematics learning outcomes of class VIII-5 students at SMPN 45 Pekanbaru on the topic of the Pythagorean Theorem, where only 14 out of 36 students (38.9%) met the Minimum Criteria for Learning Objective Achievement (KKTP). Observations revealed that the learning process had not fully implemented the stages of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model, which emphasizes student-centered learning through problem identification, group collaboration, exploration, and evaluation. The aim of this study was to improve the learning process and enhance student achievement in mathematics by applying the PBL model. This research employed a collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) approach, conducted in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection phases. The research subjects were 36 students of class VIII-5 at SMPN 45 Pekanbaru in the 2024/2025 academic year. Data were collected using observation sheets for teacher and student activities, as well as mathematics achievement tests. The results showed that the implementation of the PBL model had a positive impact on student and teacher activity during the learning process. The percentage of students who achieved the KKTP increased from 38.9% in the pre-cycle to 50% in cycle I and 66.7% in cycle II. These findings indicate that the application of the PBL model successfully improved the learning process and student mathematics achievement. Therefore, this model is recommended as an effective instructional approach to enhance the quality of mathematics education in junior high schools.
