Abstract

This study aims to describe the narrative structure in the short story collection Memburu Muhammad by Feby Indirani by applying Seymour Chatman’s theoretical framework, which distinguishes between the components of story and discourse. The research is grounded in the need to understand how contemporary literary works construct meaning through narrative organization, particularly those addressing social, spiritual, and humanistic issues. The data consist of textual excerpts, events, actions, characters, and discourse elements found in five selected short stories Rahasia Rumah Kami, Bakso Terenak di Dunia, Dia Bertanya Tentang Tuhan, Kisah Cinta Azazil, and Melukis Tuhan, with the short story collection serving as the primary data source. Data were collected through close reading, observation, and note-taking, followed by systematic classification using Chatman’s analytical categories. The analysis employed a qualitative descriptive method by reducing data, identifying the structure of story and discourse, interpreting their narrative functions, and examining how both components interact to shape the thematic meaning of each story. Data validation was conducted through theoretical triangulation and referential adequacy to ensure the accuracy of interpretation. The results show that all five stories exhibit coherent story structures composed of kernels, character actions, events, characterizations, and settings, while their discourse elements appear through variations in narrative sequencing, flexible points of view, and symbolic-reflective linguistic style. These findings indicate that Feby Indirani successfully integrates story and discourse to create meaningful narratives that are communicative, aesthetically rich, and capable of encouraging readers to engage critically with moral, spiritual, and humanistic issues.

Abstract

This study analyzes gender issues in Genduk Duku, a novel by Y.B. Mangunwijaya, through Michel Foucault’s Critical Discourse Analysis. Set in the historical context of the Mataram Kingdom, the novel portrays various forms of gender inequality experienced by female characters, particularly Genduk Duku, within a patriarchal social structure. This research aims to describe the manifestations of gender issues, power relations, and forms of female resistance depicted in the text. This qualitative descriptive research employs content analysis techniques. The data consist of textual excerpts from the novel that represent subordination, objectification, stigmatization, marginalization, and symbolic violence against women. The analysis is guided by Foucault’s concept of power relations, including power over the social body, power over the sexual body, and power over thought, all of which operate through discourse, cultural institutions, religion, and political structures. The findings show that women in the novel are positioned as objects of male and aristocratic power. The female body is treated as property of the ruler, a sexual commodity, and an element of a social system that demands obedience. Patriarchal discourse spreads through customary rules, royal law, and linguistic constructions that normalize domination. However, the study also reveals various forms of resistance, expressed through the female characters’ courage to reject harassment, defend their dignity, and make autonomous life decisions. These results indicate that Genduk Duku functions not only as a historical narrative but also as a critique of the enduring nature of gender inequality. This research contributes to feminist literary studies and expands the application of Foucault’s theory in examining power relations within Indonesian literary texts.

Abstract

One of the key processes in communication is listening. Listening is a language skill that can broaden one’s horizons when done well and correctly. Gender refers to the observable differences in society between men and women; it is not innate and can change over time. Every individual has a distinct personality, which is categorized into two types: extroverted and introverted. The researcher conducted this study after observing differences in listening outcomes between women and men with diverse personalities during learning activities in a university setting. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of gender (male and female) and personality types (introvert and extrovert) on the listening competence of students in the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Program, FKIP, Unissula. This quantitative study employed an experimental design involving 60 students using a simple 2 x 2 factorial design. This study employed linear regression analysis to examine the influence of the variables under investigation. The hypotheses for this study consist of Ho, which states that there is no significant interaction between gender and personality type in students’ listening skills, and Ha, which states that there is a significant interaction between gender and personality type in students’ listening skills. The results of the study indicate that, in general, there is a positive interaction between gender and personality type regarding students’ listening competence. This interaction is evident from the statistical calculations, which show that the calculated F-value is 3.619, which is greater than the critical F-value of 3.072. The findings reveal that female students with an extroverted personality type demonstrate better listening performance compared to others. Furthermore, there is a relationship between gender and personality that can influence students’ listening performance. Therefore, it can be concluded that there is an interaction between these two variables regarding students’ listening competence, and thus the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

Abstract

Dyslexia is a neurological disorder that affects the ability to read and process written language in elementary school-aged children. This study aims to identify categories of students at risk of dyslexia and analyze teacher strategies in addressing learning difficulties at SDN 004 Terantang Manuk. The study used a qualitative approach with a case study type conducted in December 2025. The sample was selected purposively involving four homeroom teachers of grades III, IV, V, and VI as key informants. The research instruments included semi-structured interview guidelines and an observation checklist. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and passive participant observation, analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was guaranteed through triangulation of sources, techniques, and time. The results showed that students at risk of dyslexia displayed characteristics in three aspects: (1) Academic: difficulty recognizing letters, low reading speed, difficulty understanding reading, and poor writing quality; (2) Cognitive: slow to learn, short-term memory impairment, and limited vocabulary; (3) Behavioral and emotional: easily distracted, low motivation, and low self-confidence. Teacher strategies include a multisensory learning approach, individualized guidance, intensified reading practice, an emotional approach, and a positive attitude. Obstacles faced include internal factors such as lack of concentration and external factors such as minimal parental guidance. Research implications include the need for teacher training, the development of a referral system with professional services, parent education, the provision of adaptive learning resources, and the implementation of inclusive education policies in accordance with Ministerial Regulation of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology No. 48 of 2023.

Abstract

This study examines the development of Indonesian digital literature through the identification of its forms and the accompanying methodological implications. Although literary production in the digital space is increasingly abundant and has received academic attention, there is still little attention examining the diversity of forms and its methodological consequences that arise from differences in material and medium. Two main problems that guide this study are how have Indonesian digital literary forms developed as a medium of expression, and what methodological challenges arise in examining them. This study then uses a historical-material approach borrowing Bolter and Grusin's media remediation framework. This study identifies four main categories: Material Digital Literature, Web-based Literature, App-based Literature, and Chat Literature as well as Generative Literature. Each form demonstrates transformations in the production and reception of literary texts, which require different methodological approaches. This article’s argument emphasizes the importance of alignment between method, medium form, and interpretive validity in the study of digital literature. These findings encourage the development of an adaptive approach in the study of Indonesian digital literature to achieve a sharp understanding of technological and authorial aspects.

Abstract

Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of proper spelling usage in writing fictional narratives at the junior high school level. The fundamental question examined is how spelling errors appear in the fictional narrative compositions of 9th-grade students at MTsS Al Islam Bunut and what types and frequencies of those errors occur. The researcher positions themselves as an observer and linguistic analyst focusing on orthographic aspects based on the General Guidelines for Indonesian Spelling (PUEBI). This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with documentation techniques to collect data in the form of students’ fictional narrative essays. The data were analyzed through the stages of identifying, classifying, and interpreting spelling errors found. The results show that the most dominant spelling error is the misuse of capital letters, followed by incorrect use of prepositions and conjunctions, as well as incorrect compound word formations. From 30 student compositions analyzed, more than 150 spelling errors were found across various categories. These findings indicate the need for more focused and integrated spelling instruction in narrative writing lessons. Based on these results, it is expected that teachers can design more effective teaching strategies to improve students’ writing skills, particularly in the area of spelling.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of bilingualism among elementary school children through an ethnographic study conducted in a multicultural environment, employing a sociolinguistic theoretical framework. Sociolinguistics, as an interdisciplinary field that investigates language-related issues in relation to its use within society, provides a foundation for understanding the complexity of bilingualism among children. The study aims to explore the patterns of bilingualism in elementary school students and their implications for language education in multicultural contexts. The research adopts a qualitative approach using the ethnography of communication method to observe children’s language use across various social contexts. The ethnography of communication is selected as an approach to understand culturally diverse communities, enabling an in-depth analysis of social, situational, and cultural factors that influence language use. The findings reveal that children experience incipient bilingualism, which serves as the foundation for subsequent bilingual development. Bilingualism is not merely an individual phenomenon but also a group phenomenon, functioning as a means of intergroup communication and a marker of identity. The children demonstrate challenges in both interactive and transactional communication, reflecting the complexity of navigating between their first language (L1) and Bahasa Indonesia as a second language (L2). This study confirms the importance of sociolinguistics as a fundamental foundation for education at the elementary level. The findings highlight the urgency of developing sociolinguistic approaches in language teaching that accommodate the realities of bilingualism. The implementation of a sociolinguistic approach in language learning requires a paradigm that views linguistic diversity as an educational asset rather than a barrier. In conclusion, the study underscores that sociolinguistics constitutes a fundamental interdisciplinary foundation for developing effective language education in multicultural contexts. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of sociolinguistic issues and provides a descriptive account of the social conditions of communities in relation to their language use.

Abstract

The representation of women in literature is closely related to the construction of gender ideology and power relations in society. In the context of Madurese culture, the values of family honour and social hierarchy play a significant role in shaping gender relations that tend to be patriarchal. This study examines the representation of patriarchal discourse and the negotiation of Madurese women’s agency in contemporary Indonesian novels. This research employs a qualitative approach using Norman Fairclough’s model of critical discourse analysis. The data consist of three contemporary Indonesian novels featuring Madurese female characters: Damar Kambang by Muna Masyari, Paraban Tuah by Elok Teja Suminar, and Silsilah Duka by Dwi Ratih Ramadhany. The findings indicate that patriarchal discourse is constructed through linguistic choices, cultural symbolism, and social narratives that position women as guardians of family honour and objects of social control within family structures, cultural norms, and broader social relations. However, the novels also depict various forms of women’s agency through self-reflection, symbolic resistance to social stigma, and personal decision-making in response to patriarchal pressures. These findings suggest that contemporary Indonesian novels not only reproduce patriarchal discourse but also create discursive spaces for articulating women’s agency within local cultural contexts.

Abstract

Character of Nini Antéh is a significant figure in the Sundanese oral literary tradition who has undergone various transformations in modern literary. This study aims to analyze the narrative transformation of the Nini Antéh folktale into the modern drama script Antéh. This study focuses on comparing the intrinsic elements of both works, including characters, plot, setting, and theme. The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach. The research data consisted of the Nini Antéh folktale as a representation of traditional literature and the Antéh drama script by Nunu Nazarudin Azhar as a representation of modern literature. The analysis was conducted using a structural approach to identify the elements that create the works, followed by a comparative literary approach to examine the similarities and differences between the two texts. The results show that both works share similarities in their main characters and central theme, namely the story of a woman who lives on the moon. Antéh is depicted in both works as loyal, patient, and skilled at borrowing or begging. However, there are differences in the plot development, setting, and conflict of the stories. The Nini Antéh folktale features a more detailed plot with social conflicts related to community life and the royal environment. In contrast, Antéh's play script emphasizes symbolic and psychological conflict with an imaginative and mythological setting. This difference demonstrates narrative transformation of folklore into modern drama. This transformation demonstrates how traditional stories can be adapted and developed to suit different aesthetic needs and cultural contexts.
