Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of communication and the principles of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah) in efforts to increase community economic independence, identify factors that influence multisectoral communication in stunting prevention, and explore the relationship between economic independence and stunting prevention. The locus of this research is Mandailing Natal Regency and Padangsidimpuan City, two areas in North Sumatra with high stunting rates. Maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah, which emphasizes the protection of religion, life, mind, descendants, and property, can provide a new approach to reducing stunting through increasing economic independence. A qualitative approach was used in this study, using the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) method to explore the views of the community and stakeholders. Increased economic independence contributes significantly to improving the nutritional status and health of children. Economic independence allows better access to nutritious food and health services, and increases parental knowledge about nutrition. Economic empowerment programs that focus on women can improve their social and economic status, which has a positive impact on childcare. Furthermore, greater economic independence improves families' ability to pay for health services and invest in children's education. The results of the study indicate that the synergy between communication activities and emphasizing the values of Islamic law (maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah) in efforts to increase economic independence can contribute to reducing stunting rates. The application of communication principles and the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah (Islamic principles) in economic empowerment programs focuses not only on stunting reduction but also on improving overall community welfare. Therefore, this research is expected to provide new insights into the importance of a holistic approach to stunting prevention that involves various sectors and sharia values.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of modernity on religious practices among students of the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) from the 2021–2023 cohorts. Modernity, characterized by the advancement of science, technology, and digital culture, has significantly impacted students’ religious understanding, practices, and the authority of religion. This research employs a qualitative approach using purposive sampling with three participants representing each cohort (2021, 2022, and 2023). Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document studies, and were analyzed thematically. The findings reveal that modernity presents both opportunities and challenges. On the one hand, digital technology facilitates access to religious information, expands the scope of da’wah, and supports worship practices through reminder applications and online lectures. On the other hand, modernity also creates distractions from social media, encourages individualism, and raises concerns about the validity of religious information. Students respond to these challenges with various strategies, including time management, selective use of technology, and strengthening spiritual awareness. Thus, modernity does not merely weaken religious practices but can also serve as a means of reinforcing religious identity when approached wisely.

Abstract

This study explores the meaning of the bai’at of Sheikh Mustafa Husein and relates it to the contemporary context at Pesantren Musthafawiyah Purba Baru. The research employs a qualitative approach using functional theory, which views society as a system consisting of interconnected parts that work together to maintain the stability and balance of the whole. This theory was developed by sociologists Émile Durkheim, Talcott Parsons, and Robert K. Merton. The content of the bai’at emphasizes commitments such as refraining from adultery, not taking human life, avoiding immoral acts, worshiping none other than Allah forever, and pledging not to betray the homeland and religion until the end of time. In relation to the present context, this bai’at is effective in fostering a spirit of nationalism among the santri. They continue to uphold their dignity in interactions with non-mahram individuals, exercise patience to avoid conflict, and preserve the purity of their monotheistic faith in Allah, affirming Him as the one and only God on earth.

Abstract

This study highlights the practice of unregistered marriage (sirri marriage) and marriage registration among students of the Salafiyah ad-Damanhuri Islamic Boarding School, viewed from a sociological and Islamic legal perspective. This research is an empirical legal study at the Salafiyah ad-Damanhuri Islamic Boarding School, using unstructured observation and field interviews with respondents, informants, and sources as data collection techniques, data collection through observation and interviews, then analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Sadanana. The results of this study indicate that in practice, marriages at the Salafiyah ad-Damanhuri Islamic Boarding School are carried out with the female guardian authorizing the kiai to marry his daughter, accompanied by the presence of the guardian and witnesses so that it is religiously valid, but it is still classified as unregistered marriage in the perspective of positive law. The main motivation for carrying out the unregistered marriage is the desire to obtain blessings (tabarrukan). The students register their marriages after the unregistered marriage by performing tajdid nikah at the KUA. Tabarrukan in the marriage contract is permitted, but marriage registration remains essential. The most appropriate method to restore legal recognition of a sirri ‘secret’ marriage is through the marriage confirmation mechanism, ensuring that the marriage is recognized from the outset.

Abstract

Early marriage in Indonesia remains a serious problem with multidimensional impacts, ranging from reproductive health to educational sustainability and structural poverty. The purpose of this study is to analyze the legitimacy of Family Planning or Keluarga Berencana (KB) program practice from an Islamic perspective as a response to early marriage, describe family planning practices as a social strategy for maintaining tradition, and explore the adaptive rationale behind the use of family planning to mitigate the biological and social impacts of early marriage. The research method used is empirical legal research with a qualitative approach. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation studies, then analyzed using the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah framework and social agency theory. The results show that the people of Gunung Sereng Village understand family planning not only as a means of birth control but also as a social mechanism to bridge tradition with state regulations. Theologically, family planning practices are seen as aligned with the maqāṣid al-sharī‘ah in preserving the soul (ḥifẓ al-nafs) and offspring (ḥifẓ al-nasl). From a social agency perspective, communities demonstrate an active capacity to negotiate religious norms, traditions, and state law through the use of family planning as a form of adaptation and soft resistance to state policies. Thus, this research enriches the study of Islamic family law and legal pluralism in Indonesia and provides a practical contribution to the formulation of marriage policies and family planning programs that are more contextual and sensitive to the socio-cultural realities of rural communities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how the formation of religious culture in the school environment can enhance the spiritual intelligence of students, with a case study at SMP Negeri 1 Sumberasih, Probolinggo Regency. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method, involving observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques, followed by data analysis through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The validity of the data was ensured using triangulation of sources and methods to maintain the credibility and reliability of the findings. The results show that religious culture in schools is manifested through activities such as congregational prayers, Quran recitation, sunnah fasting, greetings and salutations, as well as istighasah and communal prayers. This culture tangibly shapes religious attitudes, strengthens spiritual awareness, and improves the quality of students' relationships with God, fellow human beings, and the environment. Factors supporting the successful formation of religious culture include teacher role modeling, school leadership support, parental involvement, and a conducive social environment. This study recommends a broader exploration of the relationship between religious culture and other aspects of student development, such as emotional intelligence, social character, or leadership values.

Abstract

This study examines how selected Qur’anic verses, Surah Āl ‘Imrān 191, Surah ar-Ra‘d 11, and Surah al-Isrā’ 78–79, conceptualize moral flourishing and psychological well-being, a topic that remains underexplored in contemporary Qur’anic studies and Islamic psychology. While previous research has addressed Qur’anic perspectives on ethics and spirituality, few studies have systematically connected exegetical interpretation with modern theories of eudaimonic well-being and habit formation. Addressing this gap, the study analyzes how M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir al-Misbah articulates the relationship between self-concept, moral habituation, and well-being. Using a library research design and a tahlili exegetical approach, this study draws on Tafsir al-Misbah as the primary source and integrates secondary literature on moral psychology, habit theory, and Islamic ethical thought. The analysis shows that Shihab’s interpretation frames well-being as emerging from the alignment of cognitive self-understanding, sustained ethical practice, and reflective awareness. These findings highlight a conceptual convergence between Qur’anic exegesis and contemporary psychological models that emphasize intentionality, consistency, and meaning-making as determinants of eudaimonic well-being. The study contributes to Islamic psychology and Qur’anic studies by proposing a conceptual model that integrates exegetical insights with modern psychological theory, thereby offering a more systematic understanding of how moral habituation functions as a pathway to psychological and spiritual flourishing.

Abstract

The implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at Integrated Islamic Junior High School SMPIT Al Haraki still encounters several challenges, particularly in maintaining consistent execution, teachers’ readiness to adapt learning modules, and disparities in students’ digital literacy. This study aims to analyze how the curriculum is developed, implemented, and evaluated within the context of an integrated Islamic school. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, using interviews, observations, and document analysis involving PAI teachers, school leaders, and students. The findings reveal that curriculum development follows a grass-roots model positioning teachers as the primary drivers, supported by philosophical, religious, sociological, psychological, and scientific foundations. Its implementation integrates religious habituation with digital technology using Chromebooks, Google Workspace, and interactive applications such as Quizizz, Wordwall, and Padlet. Evaluation is conducted holistically through academic assessments, moral observations, and tahfiz achievement tracking. The main challenges involve students’ concentration, classroom conditions, and variations in digital competencies. This study contributes by offering an integrative model of PAI curriculum evaluation that combines academic, spiritual, and character dimensions, while also providing practical insights for other schools aiming to develop an adaptive and Islamic-oriented Merdeka Curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of integrated education that combines formal education, diniyah (religious) teaching, and entrepreneurship training in Islamic boarding schools to strengthen the national values and economic independence of students. This study uses a Mixed Methods Sequential Exploratory design involving three key informants and forty respondents at Pondok Pesantren Al Muhajirin, Kabupaten Batanghari Jambi. Qualitative data were obtained from interviews, while quantitative data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed through Multivariate Analysis of Covariance tests. The results showed that Integrated Education has a significant role in the variables of national values and economic independence of students. This is evidenced by the analysis output obtained on national values with an F value = 17.0 and a p value < .001 and economic independence with an F value = 24.3, and a p value < .001. Post hoc tests found that the integrated education implementation model was significantly superior in increasing economic independence compared to the national values variable. In short, the synergy of these three aspects of integrated education effectively cultivates graduates with strong national character and economic competitiveness. Islamic boarding schools and policymakers are encouraged to adopt a holistic framework that serves as a systematic solution for producing graduates who are religiously committed, nationalistically inclined, and financially competitive.
