Abstract

Rat (Rattus spp.) pest infestations are a major constraint to rice productivity in Pidie Jaya Regency, Aceh, with potential losses reaching 60–70% and even crop failure. Conventional methods currently used by farmers, such as chemical rodenticides and electric traps, have proven ineffective in the long term and have negative ecological impacts. This Community Service (PKM) activity introduced the Owl House (RUBUHA) innovation as a sustainable biological control approach by involving farmer groups in Meurah Dua Sub District. The implementation method includes five stages: socialization, theoretical and practical training (30%–70%), application of RUBUHA in demonstration plots, intensive mentoring, and development of sustainability strategies. Evaluation of farmer knowledge was conducted through pre- and post-tests, while productivity impacts were measured based on harvest data before and after technology implementation. The implementation results showed an increase in rice productivity from 6.1 tons/ha to 7.2 tons/ha, with an estimated additional income of IDR 5–6 million/ha. Farmers' knowledge and skills increased by 70%, indicating the success of learning-by-doing-based technology transfer. In addition to economic benefits, the implementation of RUBUHA also reduces the use of chemical rodenticides, thus positively impacting the environment. The results of this PKM are not only relevant in supporting local food security and farmer welfare but also align with the achievement of the SDGs. Replication Innovation Rubuha to other regions is recommended as part of a community-based Integrated Pest Management strategy.

Abstract

Coastal communities in Lhokseumawe City are highly dependent on aquatic resources, one of which is through oyster harvesting. This activity has become part of the community's traditions and lifestyle, utilizing natural resources in a simple way and has been passed down from generation to generation. This community service program was conducted to identify the social characteristics of oyster gatherers and encourage sustainable oyster management in the Krueng Cunda area. The methods used included outreach and a questionnaire survey. Data were obtained through interviews and direct observation with 30 residents who were gathering oysters at several coastal locations in Lhokseumawe. Descriptive analysis was conducted to describe the general profile of oyster gatherers. The results showed that most oyster gatherers were of productive age and the majority were women. This activity is carried out with simple tools and is heavily influenced by tidal conditions. In addition to serving as a source of income, oyster gathering also has social and cultural value because it is carried out collectively and passed down within families. This condition reflects the close relationship between the community and the coastal environment. Therefore, efforts are needed to manage oysters sustainably while improving the welfare of coastal communities.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the skills, creativity, and economic independence of the community in Kesatuan Hamlet II Village, Perbaungan District, Serdang Bedagai Regency, especially for women who are housewives and school dropouts. The activity was carried out through training in making bags from leather and woven pandan leaves that combine traditional and modern motifs. The implementation method used a participatory approach with the principle of adult learning, which involved stages of socialization, demonstration of bag-making techniques, online marketing training, and collaboration with the village government and related institutions. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in the participants' understanding and skills regarding environmentally friendly bag production techniques and entrepreneurial awareness. Based on the results of the questionnaire, the majority of participants stated that this activity was beneficial and desired to continue the business independently. This program not only increases community income but also encourages the preservation of local culture through crafts based on local natural resources. Thus, this training makes a significant contribution to the development of creative MSMEs, women's empowerment, and strengthening the sustainable economy at the village level.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the digital capabilities of MSMEs and rice field tourism managers in Pematang Johar Village, Deli Serdang Regency, through the implementation of digital marketing to support sustainable tourism development. This village has significant potential in the agrotourism and local product sectors, but has not been fully optimized through technology-based promotional strategies. The activity was implemented using a participatory and educational approach, including preparation, training, mentoring, and evaluation. A total of 30 participants consisting of MSMEs and village tourism managers participated in training on creating digital business accounts, designing promotional content, and implementing marketing strategies through social media and marketplaces. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests to measure participants' understanding, as well as field observations of the practical application of the training outcomes. The results showed significant improvement, with 87% of participants able to operate digital promotional media independently. The implementation of digital marketing strategies had a positive impact on increasing local product sales by 40% and tourist visits by 25%. This activity demonstrated that digitalization of tourism promotion and MSMEs can strengthen the synergy between sustainable tourism and community economic empowerment, as well as create a technology-based, inclusive and sustainable tourism village development model.

Abstract

This Community Service Activity (PKM) was carried out to improve the understanding of home industry players in applying the process costing method as the basis for calculating production costs and determining competitive selling prices. A lack of understanding of cost allocation leads to inaccuracies in pricing and business performance measurement. Through training and mentoring activities, partners were trained to systematically identify, calculate, and accumulate production costs and compile simple financial reports. The results of the activities showed an increase in the partners' ability to manage costs, use resources efficiently, and accurately set product prices. The application of process costing has proven to support more professional, efficient, and competitive business management.

Abstract

Used cooking oil (UCO) from institutional kitchens poses environmental and health risks if improperly disposed of. This community programme, jointly organised by Politeknik Negeri Sriwijaya and Politeknik Malaysia Merlimau, aimed to introduce a simple method for converting UCO into solid soap, an eco-friendly and economically valuable product. The activity employed an applied mixed-methods design, comprising pre-assessment, technical training, hands-on practice, and post-evaluation. Participants learned about UCO purification, saponification, and safe handling of NaOH. Results indicate a substantial increase in participants’ knowledge and awareness, with 100% of respondents demonstrating improved understanding of UCO hazards and soap-making procedures. Practical implementation was successful, yielding approximately 150 bars of solid soap during the workshop. All participants expressed willingness to continue soap production independently due to its low cost, environmental benefits, and potential for micro-enterprise. The programme demonstrates that simple, community-based technical interventions can effectively enhance practical competence and promote sustainable waste valorisation. This model shows strong potential for replication in similar educational and community settings.

Abstract

This community service program addresses the need for strengthening religious moderation and social cohesion in Batangtoru District, North Sumatra, a region characterized by diverse religious, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Despite this diversity, limited understanding of religious moderation and minimal cross-belief interaction have posed social challenges. The program aims to enhance cooperative (gotong royong) economic empowerment and cross-identity social cohesion by internalizing the local cultural values of Dalihan Natolu within four community business groups. Using a community-based empowerment approach and the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, the program integrates religious moderation principles and local wisdom to foster social solidarity, mutual trust, and economic collaboration. Collective economic practices including joint farming, micro-enterprises, and clan-based cooperatives—serve as practical platforms for applying these values. The results demonstrate significant positive outcomes across three dimensions. Economically, group incomes increased by 15–20%, production efficiency improved through collective procurement, and marketing capacities strengthened. Socially, intergroup trust, open communication, deliberative decision-making, and conflict resolution through customary dialogue (martonggo raso) were enhanced. Culturally, Dalihan Natolu values were reflected in equitable task distribution, respect for individual capacities, and intergenerational solidarity. Overall, the program confirms that local cultural approaches can effectively support economic empowerment, strengthen social capital, and promote sustainable religious moderation, making it suitable for replication in other culturally diverse regions.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology in the modern era has brought about significant changes in ways of thinking, behaving, and interacting, particularly among the younger generation. The rapid flow of global information is often unfiltered by moral and spiritual values, potentially distancing the younger generation from the true teachings of Islam. In this context, instilling Islamic values is crucial to ensure that the use of digital technology remains within the bounds of Islamic law and good morals. This study aims to outline the concept and strategy for instilling Islamic values in the use of digital media, based on the perspectives of the Qur'an, Hadith, and the thoughts of Islamic scholars. The research method employed a qualitative approach through a literature review of relevant Islamic literature. The study's results indicate that values such as piety, trustworthiness, iffah (maintaining honor), tabligh (conveying the truth), and mas'uliyyah (responsibility) must be the foundation of digital ethics for the younger generation. Through Islamic education, parental role models, and the development of a healthy social and virtual environment, these values can be internalized, enabling digital technology to become a means of preaching, education, and strengthening faith. Thus, instilling Islamic values is not only a moral bulwark, but also a direction for the younger generation to utilize digital progress in a civilized, productive manner, and in accordance with Islamic guidance.
