The role of the poet as a crusader for social justice has been well-acknowledged in literary circles and beyond. This stems from the nature of art as a humanistic endeavor genetically imbued with the spirit of standing with humanity and freeing it from the stranglehold of social malfeasance, reprehensible and tendencious inclinations. Poetry is, therefore, a unique artistic expression of solidarity with the people and an aspiration or vision towards a better human experience. Osundare’s social involvement through literary practice has meant the engagement of issues with the intent of exposing the contradictions that impoverish society. The social involvement and foregrounding of the thematic issues has entailed the mobilization of linguistic resources as stylistic strategies for poignancy and effective communication. This paper interrogates the meeting point between Osundare’s social concerns in his Random Blues and the linguistic strategies he employs to the service of poetic communication. To this end, the paper analyses New Historicism which underscores the invocation of socio-political times in the production and interpretation of literature; and insights from Systemic Functional Linguistics that stress the place of function and relevance in determining linguistic choice and meaning. The paper concludes that as a social critic, Osundare has used poetry to spearhead a rude awakening of the oppressed in the society against the contradictions and manipulations by the powerful few, calling the latter to action and championing the cause to bring about social transformation and liberation from the chokehold of tyranny and oppression.

This paper examines the representation of optimism during the American progressive era in the novel Pollyanna. The analysis focuses on discovering the discourse of optimism and the critical position of the author. The theory of representation by Stuart Hall and the discursive approach by Michel Foucault were used. The contextual background and the narrations in the novel are collaborated in the analysis process to find the discourse of optimism and the critical position of the author. The result of this research shows that this novel represents optimism through the glad game and the characters' personality alterations who always look at good sides on everything and make comparison of descending life events. The study also shows that as a writer, Porter positions herself as person who supports optimism as the response in the progressive era in America. Keywords: glad game, optimism, pollyanna, positive psychology.

The paper examines the phenomena of language maintenance, shift, separation, and spread of the demographic proportion of the ethnolinguistic groups on either side of the borders, and argues that language use in various public domains is consistent with language policy, planning, and development. The paper is anchored on visible data in a conceptual framework that offers a triglottic configuration that has been used in both and within various multilingual states in Africa, and more specifically with Cameroon by Tadedjeu (1975) and Nigeria by Brann (1981). The Tadedjeu and Brann framework enabled an analysis of the border configuration concerning languages. It is indicated that the seemingly autochthonous peoples of the border are so deeply rooted that it appears most of them wandered there within the last few centuries. Thus, with the growing level of interdependence across the border region, it is considered that the younger generation of the border peoples will someday wander into cities, become bilingual, and forget their language, leaving behind a vanishing generation of chthonophones.

The General Will is one of Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s original contributions to the district of political philosophy. The intellectual burden and herculean task of this inquiry consist of reconciling the General Will with the sanctity of individual freedom, which Rousseau also purports to protect. Through the method of philosophical and textual analysis, this paper examines the inherent absurdities, complexities, and obscurities associated with the determination and realisation of the General Will, which lie at the heart of, and are the nucleus of, the political philosophy of Rousseau. It further x-rays the acclaimed infallibility and veracity of this political theory vis-à-vis its claim as a moral norm—an authentic will that is ultimately right in its normative credentials. It adopts a qualitative research method, in which case, it is basically descriptive and highly analytical. It is significant as it provides a blueprint and a veritable guide for policymakers at all governance or social engineering levels. In conclusion, a case is made that, notwithstanding its manifold discontents and gross inadequacies, it is indeed a standard for enhancing distributive justice and the common good. It recommends that the doctrine of the General Will be made a guiding ideology and national philosophy and be incorporated into the federal character principle to address the lingering and looming challenges of Nigerian federalism against the backdrop of its fragile state structure. It also suggests that it be used as a criterion for establishing or gauging essential aims and guiding principles of state policy in the Nigerian political system.
