Abstract

The goal of this study was to ascertain the Talking Sticks method of English language learning, which is used in the English for Communication course at IPB University's Vocational School. An experimental methodology is applied. Qualitative research is the kind that this is. Tests and interviews were used as methods of data gathering. Three hundred students from the Vocational School of IPB University's Digital Communication and Media Study Program served as the research subjects. The study's findings indicate that people's speaking abilities were valued more highly. Pre-test scores average 74, post-test scores average 77 for the control group and 89 for the experimental group. It is clear from this procedure that Talking Sticks can be utilized as a learning tool to improve speaking abilities. Lecturers are able to observe how the methods of learning that are employed can improve students' English comprehension. Additionally, it is known from the interview process that professors can identify candidates with strong and weak talents by using the results of the pre- and post-tests.

Abstract

This study examines the barriers faced by EFL students in making an English video project as a task given by the teacher to improve their speaking communication skills in English. The method used in this study is to use qualitative through a descriptive approach to find out students' perceptions while making an English video project. The research sample consisted of 28 students, and data was collected through observation and interviews to find out in depth perceptions about the barriers faced by students while making English video projects or tasks. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of the study show that the barriers faced by EFL students consist of a low vocabulary, a lack of understanding of video editing, weak reference sources, a lack of sophistication in the technology used, and a long time spent completing a video project. Even so, students can still make English video projects even though the product results are not optimal.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the emblematic discourse markers lah in Colloquial Singaporean English (CSgE). The questions addressed are why the lah particle is commonly used as a discourse marker in CSgE and to what extent it contributes to the analysis and description of discourse markers in English language. This descriptive qualitative study explores empirically and theoretically the topic grounded on the secondary sources. The involvement of a related-literature review from previous researchers and experts, written in some journal articles and scientific books, has been considered. The result of the study demonstrates that the particle lah is indeed commonly used as a discourse marker by Singaporeans and identified as one of the most emblematic discourse markers in CSgE. The notion of diglossic situation seems to be one of the reasons why lah is widely used among Singaporeans. The pragmatic function of lah is noticeable as well since it is used to indicate emphasis, solidarity, familiarity and informality. Finally, the particle lah surely contributes to the analysis and description of discourse markers because it represents a naturally-occurring example of English in use. So, lah may enrich the English grammar, highlight its pragmatic function, and demonstrate the variability of English.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between vocabulary mastery and plagiarism among university students. Conducted at a private university in West Jakarta, Indonesia, it involved 71 students from various majors enrolled in a rhetoric and composition course. Using iThenticate to measure plagiarism and the Vocabulary Levels Test (VLT) to assess vocabulary proficiency, the research found a low average plagiarism rate of 11.56% in the students' essays. The study revealed no significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and the extent of plagiarism. Additionally, no substantial difference was observed in the amount of plagiarized content between students with lower and higher vocabulary proficiency. These findings suggest that vocabulary mastery alone may not be a significant factor in determining plagiarism behaviors, highlighting the multifaceted nature of plagiarism. The study underscores the need for further research into other potential contributors to plagiarism, such as psychological factors and cultural influences, and emphasizes the importance of teaching proper citation practices to combat academic dishonesty.

Abstract

Since its launch in late 2022, the use of ChatGPT has garnered controversies despite its benefits and potential in helping foreign language study. While many scholars have warned against its risk to academic integrity, there are only a few studies investigating the perception of Indonesian higher education students in using ChatGPT. This article examines the perceptions of Indonesian higher education students in using ChatGPT by utilizing open-ended questions distributed via Google Form. Data from 16 participants currently enrolled in a hospitality study program were gathered. All participants reported that they mostly use ChatGPT to assist them with university assignments. For language study, nine students reported that they found it useful, especially to learn new vocabulary and its straightforward explanation compared to the teacher’s explanation. More studies are needed to explore how English learners can gain benefits by using ChatGPT and how teachers can utilize ChatGPT to explore more alternatives in promoting learner’s autonomy and more enhanced learning experience.

Abstract

This literature review explores the challenges and opportunities associated with integrating educational technology in Cambodian higher education institutions. It aims to identify effective strategies for incorporating technology into teaching and learning. By systematically analysing research studies, academic publications, and empirical data from 2007 to 2023, the review highlights key obstacles, including technical limitations, restricted access to digital tools, cultural barriers, insufficient digital literacy, high costs, and inadequate infrastructure. Conversely, educational technology offers numerous benefits, such as increased student engagement, access to diverse learning resources, support for self-directed learning, and the development of essential 21st-century skills. Additionally, it facilitates global communication, enriching the overall educational experience. The findings indicate that successfully integrating technology into Cambodian higher education requires addressing these challenges while maximizing the available opportunities. To achieve this, school administrators must enforce institutional and classroom policies to prevent the ineffective use of digital tools, ensuring that both educators and students gain meaningful educational benefits.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) in improving the English vocabulary mastery of sixth-grade students at SD Negeri No. 4 Balangnipa. The research was motivated by the lack of vocabulary mastery among students due to the use of conventional learning models. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest model was employed. The research sample consisted of 21 students. Data collection techniques included vocabulary tests, observation, questionnaires, and documentation. The data were analyzed using a paired sample t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, as indicated by the increase in students’ average scores from pretest to posttest. Statistical analysis revealed a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating that the PWIM method was effective. Observational data also showed active student participation and positive responses toward the learning model. The PWIM approach, which integrates visual imagery and contextual learning, was proven to enhance students’ engagement and retention of vocabulary. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that PWIM is an effective teaching model for improving English vocabulary mastery in elementary school students.

Abstract

The adoption of ChatGPT into academic setting could be more prevalent due to its potential in leveraging EFL learners’ language skills. Despite its popularity, the integration of this AI tool in Indonesia within academic setting is still relatively underdeveloped, and taking into account how learners perceive ChatGPT could potentially provide informed decisions before its integration. Thus, this study aimed at investigating learners’ attitudes towards ChatGPT with particular attention to gender and related variables suggested by the literature. Adopting a qualitative approach through cross-sectional survey, 70 EFL college students of non-English major participated in this study in filling out five-likert scale of 32 items. The findings demonstrated that learners had moderate attitude towards ChatGPT in behavioral, affective, and emotional aspect, and exhibited low frequency and usage duration on ChatGPT. The students had mixed attitudes on ethical issues in using ChatGPT, and generally supported the notion of using ChatGPT adhering to institution regulation, and there was no indication of addition to the tool in academic setting. While there was no significant difference in affective and cognitive aspects, it was found that male differed significantly than female students in terms of behavioral aspect, indicating the tendency of using ChatGPT for future academic activities.

Abstract

This study explores lesson plans for writing job applications for vocational students using a systematic literature review as a research design by highlighting lesson plans for teachers in teaching writing job applications. This systematic literature review method was conducted with the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses” using the guideline of PRISMA 2020, where it helps us in improving the reporting of the systematic reviews, making it more transparent, complete, and easier to assess and replicate the data findings into our research discussion. For this research, we have collected about 200 articles through trusted web journals such as Scopus, Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Then we've narrowed it down to 172 articles, and we picked the topics that are appropriate and relevant to our research discussion. Through our findings, we found that there are common challenges faced by teachers and students, such as writing errors in job application letters as well as unclear objectives, unaligned activities, poor time management, and lack of student engagement. Throughout the lesson plan and writing error that we analyze from the articles, we also want to find out what teaching activities can be improved by the teacher, including lesson plan design for writing job application letters for vocational students.

Abstract

Pragmatic competence is a crucial component of cultural understanding, encompassing the ability to select and interpret expressions and utterances in specific context of communication. This aspect of language instruction often receives insufficient attention due to teacher priority on language forms over its functions. The primary objective of this study was to identify types of speech acts in the dialogues of the first and fourth editions of the "New Interchange" series written by Jack C. Richards and Jonathan Proctor. Utilizing Searle’s classifications of speech acts, the results indicated that both editions provided a range of suitable speech acts for beginner learners. Moreover, the fourth edition presented a greater frequency of speech acts in a relatively proportional manner compared to its predecessor, suggesting an enhancement in the instructional material's capacity to foster pragmatic competence. To maximize this potential, teachers should use effective strategies that include explicitly teaching speech acts, providing guided practice, and creating opportunities for meaningful interaction. By doing so, learners are facilitated to manage the complexities of language use in different sociolinguistic contexts, thereby improving their communication skills.
