Abstract

Background: Chronic energy deficiency (CED) among pregnant women remains one of the nutritional problems contributing to an increased risk of pregnancy complications, low birth weight, and stunting. One approach that can be taken is to empower families by utilizing locally available plant-based foods with high nutritional value, such as moringa leaves. The GELORA NABATI Program (Family-Based Natural Plant-Based Local Food Movement) was developed as a community service innovation to improve families’ knowledge, skills, and participation in preventing CED among pregnant women. Objective: To improve knowledge, skills in processing local plant-based foods, and family involvement in meeting the nutritional needs of pregnant women at risk of KEK in the service area of the Wara Selatan Community Health Center in Palopo City. Methods: The community service activities employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach through health education sessions, training in local food processing, cooking classes, family mentoring, as well as monitoring and evaluation. The target participants were 30 pregnant women at risk of KEK and their accompanying family members. Evaluation was conducted using pretest–posttest assessments, skill observations, and activity documentation. Results: The participants’ average knowledge score increased from 61.20 to 87.40 after the intervention. The proportion of households with “good” local food processing skills increased from 16.7% before the training to 83.3% after the training. A total of 90.0% of families expressed a commitment to continue utilizing local foods to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant women. In addition, a group of GELORA NABATI cadres was formed to serve as local leaders who support the program’s sustainability within the community. Conclusion: The GELORA NABATI program effectively enhances the capacity of pregnant women and their families to utilize plant-based local foods as a means of preventing chronic energy deficiency (CED) and has the potential to serve as a community empowerment model that can be replicated in other regions.

Abstract

The enactment of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the National Criminal Code (KHP Nasional) marks a change in the criminal law paradigm in Indonesia through the strengthening of the concept of Restorative Justice and the recognition of living law as part of the national legal system. This change requires the readiness of community leaders as the main actors in deliberation based dispute resolution at the village level. Community service activities in Tuban Regency aim to optimize the understanding and skills of community leaders in implementing Restorative Justice in accordance with the provisions of the National Criminal Code. The method used is Participatory Action Research (PAR) combined with the Clinical Legal Education model through the stages of identifying partner needs, legal counseling, penal mediation simulation, training in the preparation of peace agreement documents, and evaluation with pre-test and post-test. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' understanding of the concept of Restorative Justice, the scope of cases that can be resolved through peace, and the ability to prepare peace documents that are more systematic and have administrative power. In addition, the preparation of practical modules and the draft of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for village mediation are important outputs for the sustainability of the program. This activity contributes to strengthening the synergy between state law and the law that lives in society so that dispute resolution can be carried out fairly, participatoryly, providing legal certainty, and maintaining social harmony.

Abstract

This Community Service (PkM) activity aims to educate and improve the understanding of the community in Margomulyo Village, focusing on financial literacy in managing household and personal finances. This program is implemented through three stages: a counseling session, an interactive discussion session, and a final evaluation to assess the community's understanding after the activity. This community service activity successfully broadened the participants', in this case the village community, insights into effective financial management. Based on the material presented, residents now understand the urgency of financial literacy and its application methods. However, the results of the discussions showed that before this activity, the local community was still unfamiliar with the instruments and concepts of financial literacy that currently exist. This understanding is crucial as a basic foundation for the community to avoid financial crises. Financial problems do not always stem from low income, but are often triggered by management errors, such as non-prioritizing consumption patterns, late payment of obligations, and the lack of future fund protection.

Abstract

Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is an infectious disease commonly found in children and is characterized by cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, and respiratory problems. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2024, there were approximately 3 million ARI cases worldwide in 2022, with an estimated mortality rate ranging from 290,000 to 650,000 deaths. This study aimed to implement family nursing care for a family member with ARI. The study used a qualitative method with a case study approach on the family of Mr. R for 5 days, namely May 1-5, 2026, through home visits in the working area of the Singosari Public Health Center, Pematangsiantar. Data were collected through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and documentation, using a family nursing assessment format, a nursing kit, a health education plan, a leaflet, and the standard operating procedure of effective cough training. The nursing diagnoses identified were Ineffective Airway Clearance, Ineffective Health Maintenance, and Ineffective Family Health Management. After five days of nursing care, the respiratory condition of Miss P improved, the ability to expectorate secretions increased, and the family knowledge and ability to care for the sick family member improved. Family nursing care helped improve the health condition of Miss P and enhanced the family ability to perform family health care tasks. Families are encouraged to implement clean and healthy living behaviors to prevent the recurrence of ARI.

Abstract

Breastfeeding self-efficacy is an important psychological factor that affects the sustainability of breastfeeding. Low Self-Efficacy can contribute to early cessation of breastfeeding. This community-based education activity aims to improve the Self-Efficacy of breastfeeding through video-based lactation education for postpartum mothers in the working area of the Leuwidamar Health Center, Lebak Regency, in 2026. A total of 13 postpartum mothers were involved in the activity. The implementation stages include initial measurement using the 14-item Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF), 15-20 minutes of education about the benefits of breast milk, position and attachment, lactation management, and handling of breastfeeding problems. The educational video was shared via WhatsApp so that it could be replayed, then measured again one week after the intervention. The results showed an increase in the average score of BSES-SF from 35.38 (SD 1,261; range 34–38) to 65.92 (SD 3,068; range 60–70). The paired t-test showed a statistically significant change (mean difference of 30.538; p=0.0001). Video-based lactation education is feasible as a promotive strategy in primary health services and has the potential to strengthen maternal confidence in breastfeeding. Further implementation needs to be complemented by individualized counseling as well as evaluation of long-term breastfeeding practices.

Abstract

Education on medicine use from elementary school age is important for developing knowledge and safe medicine-use practices. This activity aimed to evaluate changes in medication literacy among madrasah ibtidaiyah students after participating in an interactive educational session on appropriate medicine use. A one-group pre-test and post-test design was applied to 35 students. Medication literacy was assessed using 10 questions with “yes” and “no” response options. The mean score increased from 7.60 ± 1.61 in the pre-test to 7.89 ± 2.13 in the post-test. The percentage of correct answers also increased from 76.00% to 78.86%. Based on individual score changes, 16 students improved, 11 had unchanged scores, and 8 had lower scores. The greatest improvements were found in questions concerning semisolid dosage forms and keeping medicines out of the reach of young children. In contrast, students’ understanding of appropriate medicine storage decreased. These findings indicate a limited improvement in medication literacy following the educational session. Future educational activities should incorporate demonstrations, visual media, educational games, repetition of key messages, and positively worded assessment items to strengthen students’ understanding.

Abstract

Monosaccharide carbohydrates such as glucose, fructose, and galactose are simple sugars found in various foods that serve as vital energy sources for the body. However, a lack of understanding regarding the types, sources, and consequences of excessive monosaccharide consumption can influence public consumption habits. As food providers, traditional market vendors play a crucial role in disseminating accurate information to consumers. This activity aimed to assess vendors' knowledge regarding monosaccharide types, food sources, the effects of excessive consumption, and the importance of understanding the sugar content of the foods they sell. The methodology involved an educational outreach session combined with a questionnaire for data collection. The activity was conducted through direct engagement with vendors, utilizing educational materials such as leaflets and posters to facilitate information delivery. The results indicated that the vendors' knowledge level fell into the moderate category. While respondents demonstrated a good understanding of the health impacts of excessive sugar consumption and sources of fructose, their knowledge regarding sources of galactose and the importance of knowing the sugar content of their products remained low. Based on these findings, it is concluded that targeted and sustained education is necessary to enhance vendors' knowledge of monosaccharide carbohydrates. Such knowledge improvement is expected to support vendors in acting not merely as sellers but also as agents of nutrition education, thereby encouraging healthier consumption patterns among the public.

Abstract

Food safety remains a critical public health issue in Indonesia, particularly due to the misuse of hazardous chemicals such as formalin and borax in food products. Traditional market vendors play an important role in the food distribution chain. However, their understanding of the risks of these substances is still limited. This community service activity aimed to improve vendors’ knowledge of the health risks of formalin and borax in food. The activity was conducted in July 2024 at Portal Rawa Buaya Market, West Jakarta, involving 25 traditional market vendors. The methods included educational sessions through lectures, interactive discussions, distribution of educational leaflets, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The results showed an increase in participants’ knowledge after the education session. Before the activity, 60% of respondents did not know about the presence and risks of formalin and borax in food. After the activity, 84% of participants stated that they understood the health risks of these substances. In addition, 80% of participants stated that they became more cautious in selecting, buying, and selling food products after the activity. The use of leaflet media and direct education helped improve participants’ knowledge. In conclusion, this community education activity can serve as an educational strategy to increase awareness and support efforts to prevent the use of hazardous chemicals in food among traditional market vendors.
