Abstract

Nutritional literacy refers to an individual's ability to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply nutrition-related information to make appropriate dietary and health decisions. Adequate nutritional literacy during adolescence is essential for supporting optimal growth, preventing nutrition-related problems, and encouraging healthy lifestyle behaviors that can be sustained into adulthood. This community service program aimed to assess the nutritional literacy level of students at St. Yoseph School and improve their understanding of the importance of balanced nutrition through educational interventions. The program consisted of a nutritional literacy assessment followed by interactive health education sessions designed to strengthen students' knowledge and awareness of healthy eating practices. The findings showed that most participants demonstrated good nutritional literacy, with relatively similar levels between male and female students. Nevertheless, differences in comprehension were still identified, indicating the need for continuous nutrition education. Schools have a strategic role in integrating nutrition promotion into educational activities to foster healthy eating behaviors and improve adolescents' long-term health and well-being.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a growing non-communicable disease that increasingly affects children due to unhealthy dietary habits, inadequate physical activity, and sedentary lifestyles. Early preventive efforts should begin in elementary schools through interactive and age-appropriate health education. This community service program aimed to improve elementary school students' knowledge of diabetes mellitus prevention using an educational snake-and-ladder game. The activity involved 30 students (10 boys and 20 girls) from SDN 16 Sumbawa. The intervention consisted of interactive health education on diabetes mellitus, its risk factors, healthy eating habits, physical activity, and healthy lifestyles, followed by an educational snake-and-ladder game, group discussions, and reflection sessions. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a pre-test and post-test design to assess changes in students' knowledge. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in knowledge, with the mean score increasing from 58.67 (SD = 12.45) before the intervention to 84.33 (SD = 10.21) after the intervention. The game-based learning approach promoted active participation, encouraged discussion, and reinforced key health messages in an enjoyable learning environment. These findings indicate that the educational snake-and-ladder game is an effective and engaging medium for improving elementary school students' knowledge of diabetes mellitus prevention. Integrating this approach into school health promotion programs may help establish healthy behaviors from an early age.

Abstract

Effective communication is one of the essential factors in ensuring patient safety and improving the quality of nursing services. Unstructured handover processes often result in incomplete or inaccurate transfer of patient information, increasing the risk of communication errors and patient safety incidents. This community service program aimed to improve nurses' knowledge and skills in implementing handover using the Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) communication method at Mandalika Regional Hospital, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. The program was carried out through educational sessions, interactive discussions, practical demonstrations, and evaluations using pre-test and post-test assessments involving 15 nurses. Educational materials emphasized the principles of effective communication, the components of SBAR, and the practical application of SBAR during nursing handovers. The evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in participants' knowledge and understanding of the SBAR framework, as reflected by higher post-test scores compared to pre-test results. Participants also demonstrated greater confidence in organizing and communicating patient information in a structured, clear, and concise manner during handover activities. The implementation of this program contributed to strengthening effective communication practices among nurses and promoting a stronger patient safety culture within the hospital. Continuous training and regular monitoring are recommended to ensure the sustainability of SBAR implementation and to further improve the quality, continuity, and safety of nursing care services.

Abstract

Smallholder cattle farming in Indonesia continues to face several challenges, including limited feed availability during the dry season, underutilization of agricultural residues as alternative feed resources, and inadequate farm financial management. These constraints contribute to low livestock productivity, high production costs, and suboptimal market value of cattle. This community service program aimed to enhance farmers' capacity through training and mentoring on silage and ammoniation feed processing, integrated with financial management practices to improve livestock productivity and market value. The program adopted a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) approach consisting of needs assessment, socialization, training, demonstrations, hands-on practice (learning by doing), mentoring, monitoring, and evaluation. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre-tests, post-tests, skill observations, and implementation monitoring. The results demonstrated significant improvements in farmers' knowledge and practical skills regarding silage production and ammoniation technology utilizing locally available feed resources. Participants also improved their competencies in bookkeeping, cash flow recording, and simple farm profit analysis. The adoption of feed preservation technologies enabled farmers to utilize forage and agricultural residues more efficiently, ensuring year-round feed availability while reducing feed costs. Furthermore, financial management training encouraged better farm administration and more informed business decision-making. This program developed an integrated community empowerment model that combines feed technology innovation with financial literacy to simultaneously improve biological productivity and economic performance of smallholder cattle farming. The proposed model has strong potential for replication in other livestock farmer groups to support sustainable livestock development.

Abstract

Microbial isolation is a fundamental step in microbiological analysis that is widely applied in the fields of medicine, food, cosmetics, and the environment. This study was conducted using a narrative review approach by critically examining fourteen scientific articles published in reputable national journals between 2018 and 2025. The methods reviewed include streak plate, pour plate, spread plate, serial dilution, surface sterilization, and cultivation on selective media such as PDA, SDA, MRSA, CMC Agar, and Pikovskaya. The review results indicate that contamination is a major obstacle in the isolation process, most extreme seen in the total failure of microalgae isolation. Endophytic isolates from matoa leaves and leilem leaves showed significant antimicrobial activity, lactic acid bacteria from traditional fish fermentation have the potential as probiotics, and cellulolytic and phosphate-solubilizing bacteria have applications in environmental biotechnology. Morphological identification still dominates but is insufficient for definitive taxonomic determination so that molecular confirmation is essential. This study concludes that there is no universal isolation method; Method selection must be context-specific, protocols must be standardized, and molecular identification must be integrated as a gold standard.

Abstract

Communication patterns play a crucial role in supporting the sustainability of fisheries businesses, particularly among coastal communities that still rely on cooperation and information exchange for their fishing activities. The purpose of this study was to identify communication patterns among fishermen, examine various obstacles faced in existing fisheries businesses, and analyze the contribution of communication patterns to fisheries business productivity in coastal communities. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach conducted in the coastal area of Batu Besar, Nongsa District. Data were obtained through field observations and in-depth interviews with fishermen, which were then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that communication among fishermen took place informally and interpersonally through direct interaction to exchange information on weather conditions, fishing seasons, fishing experiences, and various obstacles faced in running a fisheries business. Communication was also used as a means of deliberation to discuss solutions to various problems, including plans to form fishermen's groups, cooperatives, and legal arrangements to gain broader access to government programs. The research findings indicate that fisheries business productivity is influenced not only by technical factors but also by the quality of communication that can strengthen coordination, build understanding, and encourage cooperation among fishermen. Therefore, strengthening communication among fishermen and improving communication with the government are crucial steps in supporting the sustainability and productivity of fisheries businesses in coastal communities.

Abstract

The Nagaraja Sea Turtle Conservation Group at Sodong Beach, Cilacap Regency, has long carried out nest patrol, egg evacuation, semi-natural incubation, and hatchling release activities independently, yet all conservation records have been documented manually using notebooks, which are prone to loss, damage, and delayed reporting. This community service program aimed to strengthen the group’s data management capacity through the development of a web-based information system for habitat monitoring and nest data collection, using a participatory approach consisting of needs assessment, system development, training, and mentoring stages. The resulting system, named Rescue Portal, consists of an internal admin dashboard for conservation managers and a public hub page accessible at penyunagaraja.org, providing real-time tide and marine weather monitoring through third-party API integration, a risk-scored analytical report for each nest finding, an activity logbook with a verification workflow, and public branding and news management features. Training and mentoring activities enabled 10 group members to independently operate the system as part of their daily patrol routine. A post-program partner satisfaction survey (n = 10) covering material relevance, schedule adequacy, clarity of delivery, committee service, and program continuity recorded a 90% overall agreement rate (agree/strongly agree), with a mean satisfaction score of 4.44 out of 5. By replacing manual recording with a centralized digital system, the program improved the accuracy and speed of conservation reporting, strengthened the group’s institutional capacity, and is expected to support the long-term sustainability of community-based sea turtle conservation along the southern coast of Central Java.
