Abstract

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is among the most prevalent structural birth defects, affecting approximately 8–9 per 1,000 live births globally. In Indonesia, delayed diagnosis remains a critical challenge due to limited parental awareness and inadequate knowledge of early CHD warning signs. Early recognition by mothers and primary caregivers is essential to improve referral rates and clinical outcomes. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge of mothers regarding early detection of CHD in children through structured health education. A pre-experimental study using a one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted at Kelurahan Talang Putri Palembang city, in February 14th 2026. A total of 18 mothers of children aged 0–5 years participated. Educational interventions included a structured lecture, visual poster media, and physical examination demonstration by a pediatric specialist. Knowledge was assessed using a validated 10-item questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed descriptively using mean scores, score differences, and percentage of improvement. total of 18 participants completed both pretest and posttest. The mean pretest score was 70.6, while the mean posttest score increased to 87.8. The mean score improvement was 17.2 points, corresponding to a 24.4% increase from baseline. Fourteen participants showed improved scores, four participants maintained the same scores, and no participant experienced a decrease. Health education using a multimodal approach—combining lectures, visual media, and clinical demonstration—effectively increased maternal knowledge of early CHD detection. Integration of such programs into primary healthcare facilities is recommended to support early identification and timely referral of children with CHD.

Abstract

The development of digital technology, increasing individualism, social polarization, and the ecological crisis are challenges faced by young people today. This situation demands a development model that is not only oriented towards knowledge development, but also character formation that integrates social, spiritual, and ecological dimensions. Franciscan Camp 2026 was held as a community service program that aims to internalize the values of Franciscan spirituality through four main pillars, namely charity, fraternity, peace, and care for all creation. The activity was held on August 29–30, 2026 at the Saint Francis of Assisi Pastoral Catechetical College (STPKat) Semarang, involving 50 high school/vocational high school students in grades X–XII from 13 schools in Semarang City and its surroundings. Evaluation was carried out in a participatory manner through observation, written reflection, and group discussions. The results of the program demonstrate the development of empathy and a spirit of service, the strengthening of inclusive fraternal relationships, an increased awareness of the importance of reconciliation and peace, and a growing ecological responsibility as part of living out the Christian faith. The program also produced a model for youth character development based on Franciscan spirituality that integrates values, experience, reflection, and action. These findings demonstrate that Franciscan spirituality remains relevant as an approach to youth development and has the potential to be replicated in the context of schools, parishes, and Catholic youth communities.

Abstract

Reproductive health disorders among pregnant women, including anemia, preeclampsia, reproductive tract infections, and fetal malpresentation, remain major contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality in Indonesia, including the coastal areas of Makassar City. One of the affected areas is Untia Village, where limited access to health information has hindered optimal early detection of pregnancy-related complications. This community service program aimed to improve pregnant women's knowledge and ability to recognize pregnancy danger signs through community-based health education. The program was implemented using interactive educational sessions, simple self-examination demonstrations, group discussions, and pre-test and post-test evaluations involving 30 purposively selected pregnant women. The results showed a substantial increase in the average knowledge score, from 42.6% before the intervention to 85.6% afterward, with the greatest improvement observed in understanding reproductive tract infections and general pregnancy danger signs. Participants also demonstrated high levels of engagement throughout the activities. The program effectively enhanced pregnant women's readiness to perform early detection and encouraged the timely utilization of maternal health services. Program sustainability can be supported through the establishment of community reproductive health volunteers and integration with existing maternal health posyandu (integrated health service posts).

Abstract

HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health issue that requires continuous attention, particularly in vulnerable communities such as coastal populations in Maluku Province, including West Seram Regency (SBB). This community service program aimed to improve public knowledge, awareness, and preventive behaviors related to HIV/AIDS among residents of Kamarian Village, Kairatu District. The activity was conducted through health education sessions focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention, followed by interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions. The implementation consisted of three stages: preparation, intervention, and evaluation. The evaluation was conducted by measuring changes in community knowledge before and after the educational intervention. The results showed a substantial improvement in participants’ understanding of HIV/AIDS prevention. Before the intervention, only 9.4% of participants demonstrated good knowledge, whereas after the education program, this proportion increased to 71.9%. These findings indicate that structured health education effectively enhances knowledge and awareness among coastal communities, supporting efforts to promote preventive behaviors and reduce HIV/AIDS transmission risks.

Abstract

Skin health is influenced by the balance of oil, water content, and hydration, which play important roles in maintaining the skin barrier function. This community service activity aimed to evaluate skin condition through measurements of skin oil, water content, and hydration as part of health education and early detection of skin problems. A total of 155 participants were involved, consisting mainly of adults and older individuals, with female participants predominating. The examination results showed mean values of 12.96 ± 7.52% for water content, 55.49 ± 7.38% for hydration, and 22.64 ± 3.13% for oil level. Based on gender, females demonstrated slightly higher mean oil and water levels than males, while males showed slightly higher skin hydration levels. These variations indicate that biological, hormonal, environmental, aging, and lifestyle factors influence skin condition in the community. Balanced skin oil and hydration are essential for maintaining skin elasticity, protective function, and prevention of dryness-related or inflammatory skin disorders. Community-based skin examinations combined with health education may improve public awareness regarding the importance of adequate hydration and proper skin care in maintaining optimal skin health.

Abstract

Hepatitis B remains a public health problem with the potential to cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Early detection through community-based screening is essential to improve case identification and prevent transmission. This community service activity aimed to conduct HBsAg screening and provide education regarding hepatitis B among the community. A total of 155 participants were involved, with a mean age of 46.49 ± 10.29 years and an age range of 19–80 years. Most participants were female, accounting for 109 individuals (70.3%), while males accounted for 46 individuals (29.7%). Screening results showed that 153 participants (98.7%) were HBsAg negative and 2 participants (1.3%) were HBsAg positive. Gender-based distribution demonstrated that all positive cases were found among female participants. The low proportion of HBsAg-positive results indicates that most screened individuals did not have active hepatitis B infection. Nevertheless, the identification of positive cases highlights the importance of regular screening and health education as strategies for early detection, prevention of liver disease complications, and control of hepatitis B transmission within the community.

Abstract

Anemia is a public health problem that can reduce work capacity, cognitive function, productivity, and quality of life, particularly among productive-age adults. Early detection through hemoglobin screening is essential to identify individuals at risk and support preventive and health promotion efforts. This community service activity aimed to describe hemoglobin levels as an early detection measure for anemia among productive-age adults. The activity was implemented using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach, which included needs assessment and program preparation (Plan), hemoglobin screening and health education (Do), evaluation of screening results (Check), and provision of follow-up recommendations to participants (Act). A total of 45 participants underwent hemoglobin assessment using a simple screening method. Data were analyzed descriptively and presented as mean, median, frequency, and percentage. The mean age of participants was 34.69 ± 9.05 years, with females accounting for the majority of participants (36 individuals; 80.0%). The mean hemoglobin level was 14.51 ± 1.46 g/dL, with a median of 14.40 g/dL and a range of 9.60–16.90 g/dL. Most participants had normal hemoglobin levels (42 individuals; 93.3%), while anemia was identified in 3 participants (6.7%). These findings indicate that the overall hemoglobin status of the participants was generally good, although anemia was still detected in a small proportion of the population. Community-based hemoglobin screening using the PDCA approach was effective in supporting the early detection of anemia. Continuous education on balanced nutrition and adequate iron intake is recommended to prevent anemia and promote community health.

Abstract

Lung health during adolescence plays an important role in preventing chronic respiratory diseases later in life. This community service program aimed to improve students' knowledge of lung health while screening the risk of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) using the PUMA questionnaire. The program was conducted at St. Yoseph Junior High School using the Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) approach, which integrated health education and respiratory risk assessment. Educational materials covered lung function, risk factors for respiratory diseases, the harmful effects of cigarette smoke and air pollution, and preventive strategies. A total of 170 students participated, with a mean age of 15.21 ± 0.64 years; 60.6% were male and 39.4% were female. Respiratory risk screening showed a mean PUMA score of 1.71 ± 1.24, with a median score of 1 (range 0–6). Most participants were classified as having a low risk of COPD, while only one student was identified as high risk. These findings indicate that adolescents generally have a low risk of chronic respiratory disease; however, continuous health education remains essential to encourage healthy lifestyles, reduce exposure to respiratory risk factors, and maintain optimal lung health from an early age. Community-based educational and screening programs can serve as effective preventive strategies for promoting respiratory health awareness among adolescents.
