Abstract

History learning in schools still faces challenges related to low student interest and engagement due to the dominance of rote memorization approaches. This condition limits the development of students’ critical thinking skills and their ability to interpret historical values in everyday life. This article aims to examine the role of students in history learning at school, particularly in the paradigm shift from memorizing historical facts toward developing historical thinking and meaningful life interpretation. This study employs a library research approach by analyzing relevant literature on history education, learning interest, and students’ historical thinking skills. The findings indicate that active student involvement through contextual learning, historical literacy, and critical reflection can enhance learning motivation and foster historical thinking abilities. Students are not only able to understand past events but also to relate them to contemporary social realities. Therefore, history learning should be designed in a student-centered manner to become more meaningful, relevant, and contributive to character formation and national awareness in accordance with the demands of 21st-century education.

Abstract

This study examines the trajectory of Maria Ullfah’s political career from 1934 to 1947, focusing on the influence of family background and education on the formation of her political consciousness. Using historical research methods, this study presents findings showing that Maria was born into a well-educated priyayi family, which provided her with broad access to education, culminating in her legal studies at Leiden University. Her intellectual and bureaucratic environment, along with her experiences witnessing injustices faced by women, fostered social awareness and a strong commitment to addressing gender discrimination. Western education and her interactions with nationalist figures such as Sutan Sjahrir further strengthened her awareness as part of a colonized nation. After returning to Indonesia, she became actively involved in women’s organizations, educational activities, the Indonesian Women’s Congress, KOWANI, and literacy eradication efforts. During the revolutionary period, she was entrusted with important roles, including serving as a member of BPUPKI and becoming the first female Minister of Social Affairs. The findings underscore the significant role of family background, education, and personal experiences in shaping Maria Ullfah as a central figure in the women’s movement during Indonesia’s struggle for independence.

Abstract

This article examines how and why street vendors at Simpang Lima in Semarang were able to continue operating amid the 1998 monetary crisis and the post-crisis period through 2003. This study applies critical history within a socio-economic framework. Critical history, in this context, is understood as a historiographical approach that does not merely reconstruct past events but also provides in-depth analysis of historical sources through heuristic stages source criticism, interpretation, and historiography to better understand socio-economic dynamics. Research sources were collected from newspaper archives and relevant local government documents and then analyzed within their respective contexts. The findings indicate that the resilience of street vendors was driven by various adaptive strategies, such as flexibility in economic activities, adjustments to production and distribution patterns, the utilization of social networks, and negotiation skills regarding urban regulatory policies. These findings position street vendors as informal economic actors who play an active role in responding to pressures caused by the economic crisis. This study contributes to the historical analysis of the 1998 crisis by emphasizing the economic experiences of informal groups within the context of urban history in Indonesia.

Abstract

New Zealand was initially a refuge for British convicts from Australia and was regarded as a land of hope for rebuilding their lives. Over time, however, New Zealand was inhabited not only by convicts but also by various other groups seeking economic opportunity and a new livelihood. This development prompted the British government to establish a colonial state in New Zealand in 1840, appointing William Hobson as its first governor. This study aims to examine British colonization in New Zealand, encompassing the Treaty of Waitangi and the early formation of the colony, New Zealand’s transformation into a British crown colony, and the situation in New Zealand between 1852 and 1855. The research employs the historical method, which consists of several stages: topic selection, source collection (utilizing heuristics), verification (external and internal criticism), interpretation (analysis and synthesis), and historiography. The findings suggest that the need for territorial expansion and competition with France contributed to the establishment of a British colonial state in New Zealand. The colony of New Zealand was formally established through the Treaty of Waitangi, signed by British representatives and Maori chiefs. In 1841, New Zealand officially became a crown colony, meaning that it possessed a structured system of colonial governance under a governor with authority comparable to that of other British colonies worldwide. During the period 1852–1855, New Zealand experienced numerous conflicts over land disputes between European settlers (pakeha) and the Maori.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the community in preserving the Jamasan Heirloom Bende Tradition in Bumijawa Village, Tegal Regency, from a cultural anthropological perspective. The Jamasan tradition is a ritual for cleansing heirlooms, rich in historical, symbolic, social, and spiritual values, and is part of the community's collective identity. Amidst the current of modernization, this tradition faces challenges in the form of changing participation patterns and shifting views of the younger generation towards local culture. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews and documentation. Informants included caretakers, young cultural activists, and the Head of Bumijawa Village. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results show that this tradition is interpreted as an expression of gratitude, a symbol of self-purification, and a means of strengthening social solidarity and community identity. Its preservation is supported by the active role of residents and the village government on an ongoing basis.

Abstract

The advancement of digital technology has encouraged Generation Z students to use TikTok and YouTube as history learning resources; however, their digital literacy skills in evaluating such content remain understudied. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 7 Semarang regarding digital literacy in accessing historical content on TikTok and YouTube. A mixed methods approach with a sequential explanatory design was employed, collecting data through a Likert-scale questionnaire (1–5) distributed to 65 respondents, followed by in-depth interviews with eight informants. The instrument was developed based on four digital literacy competencies proposed by Paul Gilster: internet searching, hypertextual navigation, content evaluation, and knowledge assembly. The findings indicate that students' overall digital literacy falls into the moderate category with a mean score of 3.46 (69.18%). Internet searching (3.54) and knowledge assembly (3.53) were relatively stronger, whereas hypertextual navigation (3.35) and content evaluation (3.44) remained lower. Students perceived historical content on social media as more engaging due to visual and animated presentations; however, their ability to assess source credibility was still superficial. It is concluded that students' digital literacy needs further improvement, particularly in hypertextual navigation and content evaluation, so that they can critically utilize social media in history learning.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of Mohammad Ichsan in Indonesia's foreign diplomacy during the early years of independence. The study is motivated by the tendency of Indonesian diplomatic historiography to focus primarily on major figures such as Soekarno and Mohammad Hatta, while the contributions of other diplomats like Mohammad Ichsan have received far less scholarly attention. This research employs the historical method with a descriptive qualitative approach, following the stages of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The sources used in this study include archival documents, photographic archives, and relevant secondary literature. The findings indicate that Mohammad Ichsan did not merely perform administrative duties as a diplomat but also served as a symbolic representative of the state, an actor in socio-cultural diplomacy, and part of the institutional consolidation of Indonesian diplomatic missions abroad. Through various diplomatic and ceremonial activities in Bangkok, he contributed to affirming the presence and legitimacy of the Republic of Indonesia in the international arena. This study highlights the importance of supporting diplomats in the practice of Indonesian diplomacy in the post-independence period.
